The way that we learn to affect regulate is in very much pendulation. It's either I shut the emotions down and away and I go into shame and fear and anxiety.

Like the people that make us feel safe and make us feel good, the really healing relationships. They have that quality where we feel fully seen, we feel soothed, reassured in that, we feel safe, and then secure, we can always come back to that place and we can venture out in the world and we can be adventurous and do everything that we got to do. And that's what helps us get to that place where we're not pendulating in our affect regulation, but where we have containment, where I can feel big feelings, but it's going to be okay.
