New mothers have access to various mental health resources including lactation consultants, pediatricians, OB offices, and nurses who can help with breastfeeding, baby care, and postpartum concerns; however, the current support system is inadequate, and lack of sleep combined with feeling overwhelmed can quickly escalate into postpartum depression or psychosis, making it crucial for new moms to seek help immediately when experiencing concerning symptoms.

Maternal Mental Health Resources!Añadido:
Some resources available for new moms in the hospital are lactation consultants which can help get breastfeeding established, pediatricians to answer questions about normal things for babies, nurses that can provide all types of education for moms. In the hospital there are a lot of resources available, but it's when you go home that parents often find [music] they just don't know what to do. So, some resources that would be available for once you're home are you can call your OB office or message them if you have questions about yourself, or you can contact your pediatrician's office if you have questions about the baby.
And usually they're pretty understanding about answering questions even if you feel like it's a dumb question. There's no question that's dumb because everybody's had that question before.
Even though we have a lot of resources available for new moms and babies, I feel like we as a country in general are severely lacking. There are so many more things we could give to moms. We could provide new moms with more help with feeding, more answers to questions. What I would ideally like to see is somebody that could come even stay in the home overnight with a new mom or even for a few hours just to let her get some solid sleep. Helping moms get to all their appointments because they're supposed to be resting when they first get home, but they have baby appointments and new mom appointments and something every day it seems like. And [music] as far as mental health, I think that lack of sleep contributes so much to everything. The lack of sleep and feeling overwhelmed as a new mom can quickly escalate into postpartum depression or even psychosis.
It's so important to [music] get some help for that as soon as possible. As soon as you have any feeling like that might be a problem, there's help out there. If you have any questions during labor and delivery, before your labor and delivery, afterwards, feel free to ask your nurse. If you don't feel comfortable asking the doctor, then the nurse might be a little bit more approachable, and you can ask them anything. And if there's questions that your nurse doesn't know, they can find out the answers to them.
