Orch-OR is a brilliant but speculative provocation that pushes the boundaries of neuroscience into the quantum realm. It effectively challenges the reductionist view that the mind is merely a product of classical electrical signaling.

The Brain May Be a Quantum Instrument — A Hypothesis That Will Not Go AwayAdded:
The mainstream view in neuroscience is that consciousness arises from neurons, electrical signals, chemical messages, patterns of firing across networks. A view that has held for decades and explains a great deal. But there is a hypothesis proposed by Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff that suggests something more is happening. That at a deeper level, the brain may operate not only as a biological system, but also as a quantum one. The hypothesis focuses on microtubules, long hollow protein structures inside every neuron. They propose these structures host quantum computations. That tubulin proteins inside them could exist briefly in superposition. And that the collapse of these quantum states [music] is tied to moments of conscious experience. For decades, this was fringe. Standard physics says the brain is too warm and wet for fragile quantum effects to survive. Any quantum coherence should collapse within femtoseconds, far too fast to influence anything in the brain.
But recent experimental work has begun to shift the picture. Studies suggest microtubules can sustain quantum-like effects. This may happen at room temperature through a mechanism called superradiance in networks of molecules inside the protein. Other experiments show that anesthetics, the chemicals we use to switch off consciousness, bind [music] directly to microtubules and may interfere with these quantum level processes. It must be said clearly, Orch OR is a hypothesis. It is not the consensus view in neuroscience or physics. But it suggests [music] that the boundary between mind and matter may not lie where we have long assumed. That in the hollow geometry of our cells, a process may be unfolding [music] that is tied to the experience of being aware at all. We do not yet know if it is correct, but the experiments, slowly, [music] are starting to listen.
