Europe BEGS for Canadian Aluminum — Trump's 50% Tariff Just Handed It All Away

It went to Europe by the hundreds of thousands of tons. And now in the middle of a war that has shut down Middle Eastern smelters and choked the straight of Hormuz, Europe is sitting on one of the most valuable industrial advantages in the global economy, Canadian green aluminium. While American manufacturers are paying record high prices to access the same metal they used to buy at a fraction of the cost. This is the story of how one tariff handed Europe an industrial lifeline, left American factories in the cold, and locked the United States into a supply crisis it is not equipped to solve. Let's start with what Canada actually is in the world of aluminium. Canada is the fourth largest primary aluminium producer on Earth behind China, India, and Russia. It produces approximately 3.3 million tons per year and nine of its 10 smelters sit in Quebec. Quebec is not an accident of geography. Quebec has hydro Quebec, one of the largest hydroelect electric systems in the world, which provides electricity to aluminium smelters at prices up to three times lower than what American industrial customers pay. That is the entire competitive advantage of the Canadian aluminium industry condensed into one sentence. It is powered by rivers and it costs almost nothing. The Aloeta smelter in Septile alone has a production capacity of 632,000 tons per year, larger than the total output of every American smelter combined. Alcoa operates three major Quebec smelters at Bamo, Desambo and Boncore. Rio Tinto runs facilities in Sagane Lac Sanjon. In 2024, Canada exported nearly 2.6 million tons of unraought aluminium and roughly 70 to 85% of it, depending on the data set, went to one customer, the United States.

[00:02:55]That was the relationship. Stable, deeply integrated, economically logical.

[00:03:00]Canada produced the metal, America consumed it, and the arrangement worked for decades. Then Trump hit it with a 50% wall. Here is the sequence. In March 2025, the administration re-imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian aluminium.

[00:03:18]Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded immediately, announcing Canadian dollars 29.8 billion, roughly 20.7 billion US in retaliatory tariffs.

[00:03:31]Ontario, facing the immediate economic pressure, slapped a 25% sir charge on electricity exports to US states. Trump escalated, threatening to double the aluminium tariff and declaring a national emergency. In June 2025, he followed through. Canadian aluminium got hit with 50% effective immediately.

[00:03:56]The assumption inside the White House appeared to be that Canada would capitulate, that Canadian producers would absorb the cost, and that American manufacturers would benefit from the protectionist shield. None of that happened. What actually happened was a supply chain pivot that moved faster than anyone in Washington anticipated.

[00:04:16]Alcoa CEO Bill Oppplinger disclosed on a second quarter 2025 earnings call that since March of that year, the company had redirected more than 100,000 tons of Canadian aluminium that would normally have gone to US buyers to clients in other countries. He stated the reason plainly. The tariffs made the net back, what producers actually receive after deducting transport costs, tariffs, and logistics, unfavorable for US shipments.

[00:04:48]Europe was paying better premiums. So, the metal went to Europe. Aloet, the septial smelter 40% owned by Riotinto, disclosed that Europe took in 57% of its shipments in the second quarter of 2025 compared to just 4% in the first quarter. Think about that. In 3 months, a facility that sent almost everything to the United States flipped more than half its export volume to Europe.

[00:05:17]Riointo's CEO of its aluminium and lithium division told La Press that the company redirected production to Europe specifically to maximize the value of our products in the current commercial environment. Trade data confirmed the shift across the board. Canada's aluminium exports to the European Union ranged between 6% and 40% of monthly totals between April 2025 and March 2026, compared with near zero in the first quarter of 2024.

[00:05:53]In April and May of 2025 alone, the Netherlands received 11,800 tons of Canadian aluminium and Italy received 25,500 tons. Markets that had previously received essentially no Canadian primary metal. Quebec's share of exports going to the United States fell from approximately 95% to 78% between the first and second quarters of 2025.

[00:06:24]Even before the Iran war began on February 28th, 2026, Canadian shipments to Europe had already jumped 276% from 2024 levels, exceeding 590,000 tons. And then the war started and what was already a damaging trade diversion became a fullscale global crisis. The Middle East accounts for roughly 9% of global aluminium production capacity.

[00:06:55]That sounds like a small number until you understand that almost all of it is exported. The Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, run enormous energy richch smelters and ship the output to Europe, Asia, and the United States. The Strait of Hormuz is how that metal moves. When US and Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28th, 2026, the strait effectively closed to Western shipping. The IRGC declared that any vessel attempting passage would be set ablaze. More than 150 commercial ships sat anchored outside the straight unable to cross. The aluminium industry felt it immediately. Aluminium Bahrain Alba runs the world's largest singlesight smelter at 1.6 million tons per year. By March, it had cut production by 19% due to shipping disruptions. Then Iranian strikes hit Alba's plant directly.

[00:08:00]Emirates Global Aluminium, the Middle East's largest producer with its Alterawheeler facility in Abu Dhabi running 1.6 million tons per year, reported significant damage after Iranian missile strikes in late March.

[00:08:15]EGA subsequently announced that full production restoration could take up to 12 months. ING analysts Eva Manth and Warren Patterson calculated the consequences. A halt at EGA's Alterheeler smelter, Alba's reduced operations, and earlier cailments at Cataloom would take approximately 3 million tons of capacity offline, close to half of all Middle East aluminium production. Their revised estimate put the supply deficit at 2 to 2.5 million tons. CRU Group's principal analyst Guom Osu warned that lower stock levels and the potential for further disruption could push aluminium prices toward $4,000 per ton. LME aluminum futures, which were already near $3,100 per ton before the war, surged to near 4-year highs above $3,450 per ton in March 2026.

[00:09:17]gains of more than 10% in a matter of weeks. European premiums on aluminum billet surged 16% in the opening weeks of the conflict. The construction and transportation sectors which depend on aluminum billets began signaling serious supply anxiety. Bank of America analyst Whidmer put a specific number on Europe's structural problem, a 5.6 6 million ton aluminum deficit in 2026.

[00:09:47]The global shortfall is 2.2 million tons. America's domestic deficit sits at 3.8 million tons, but Europe's is the largest of all, and it arrived on top of two other supply losses Europe had already absorbed. The EU had been phasing out Russian aluminum in response to the Ukraine war. South 32's Mosal smelter in Mosamb beek was moth balled and then the Middle East went dark. That is three separate supply sources disappearing in succession inside three years. And so Europe turned where the metal was. It turned to Canada. Canadian shipments to Europe have become a structural feature of global trade, not a temporary workaround. The fact that the tariff came first before the war is what makes this story so consequential for American policy. Trump's tariff did not create the crisis, but it ensured that when the crisis arrived, the US would face it without its most reliable and natural supply partner already redirected elsewhere. Here is where the American side of this becomes undeniable. The United States has four primary aluminium smelters left. Total domestic production capacity is 1.36 million tons per year. And in 2024, the country was using only half of that, producing approximately 680,000 tons. The US imported over 4.8 million tons of crude and semi-manufactured aluminium products. In 2024, Canada supplied 2.6 million tons of that total. The Aluminium Association's own research concluded that even if every idled US smelter came back online tomorrow, restarting all of them would only meet around 15% of the current 4 million metric ton supply gap. One new smelter is being built in Oklahoma. It would be only the second to be built in the United States in 45 years. It is expected to be operational in 2030 at the earliest and its electricity supply contract has not yet been finalized. The reason new smelters are not being built is not regulatory obstruction. It is the cost of electricity. US industrial electricity rates are 32% higher than Canada's. Labor costs are 31% higher.

[00:12:20]Century Aluminium closed its Horsesville, Kentucky smelter in 2024, specifically because rising energy costs made it economically unviable, and that was before the tariffs. The Midwest premium, the sir charge on top of the London Metal Exchange price that American buyers pay for domestic delivery, tells the full story in one number. Before the tariffs, the Midwest premium sat at manageable levels. After the 25% tariff hit in March 2025, it rose sharply. After the 50% tariff in June 2025, it hit record levels. By November 2025, it reached an all-time high of $1,950 per ton. By February 2026, it broke 2 182 per ton, surpassing the psychological threshold of $1 per pound for the first time in history. US buyers were paying an all-in price exceeding $5,340 per ton. Between February and May 2025 alone, US aluminum prices shot up $139% compared to European prices. American manufacturers of cans, automotive components, construction products, aerospace parts. Every downstream consumer of aluminum absorbed that cost.

[00:14:01]Canadian aluminium cannot be replaced rapidly. US importers will have to continue sourcing from Canada or reduce their own output. The United States does not have productive capacity that could quickly and cheaply ramp up, nor many other sources capable of filling the gap. And now layered on top of all of this is a dimension that will shape global aluminium trade for the rest of the decade. Europe's carbon border adjustment mechanism, CBAM, entered its definitive phase on January 1, 2026.

[00:14:41]For aluminium, it means that every ton of metal entering Europe from outside the EU now carries a carbon charge based on the emissions intensity of its production. Highcarbon aluminium from China or other coal dependent producers faces steep CBAM costs. Lowcarbon aluminium from Quebec produced almost entirely on renewable hydroelect electric power with the lowest carbon footprint of any major aluminium producing region in the world pays almost nothing under Cbam. Quebec's eight smelters produce 2.9 million tons annually with, as Alu Quebec puts it, the lowest carbon footprint in the world. The Alysis joint venture between Alcoa and Riotinto is commercializing a smelting technology that eliminates CO2 emissions entirely, replacing them with oxygen as the byproduct. Canada didn't just get lucky on timing. It built a structurally superior product for the precise moment Europe needed it most.

[00:15:46]CBAM has created a decisive commercial advantage for Canadian aluminium in the European market that will not disappear when the war in the Middle East ends.

[00:15:56]European buyers have a legal and financial incentive to prefer Canadian aluminium over alternatives from high emission producers. and they now have established supply relationships with Canadian producers built during the tariffdriven diversion of 2025 and 2026.

[00:16:16]Those relationships have inertia. The logistics infrastructure has been built.

[00:16:21]The contracts have been signed. The tariff intended to protect American industry. What it actually accomplished was accelerating Canada's diversification away from the US market, cementing Canada as Europe's primary source of lowcarbon aluminium and leaving American manufacturers competing for a supply they helped push away at prices they cannot avoid. The numbers close this argument. Canada produced 3.3 million tons of aluminium in 2024. The US is currently short by 4 million tons per year. The Middle East just lost up to 3 million tons of annual capacity, potentially for 12 months or longer.

[00:17:07]Europe faces a 5.6 million ton deficit in 2026. The global supply shortfall is 2.2 million tons and the US Midwest premium just crossed $2,182 per ton. None of these numbers are accidents. They are the cumulative outcome of a tariff policy that treated Canada's aluminum industry as a political lever and discovered too late that it was a loadbearing wall. The war in the Middle East will eventually end.

[00:17:39]The Strait of Hormuz will reopen. Gulf smelters will rebuild. But the trade flows that Trump's tariff set in motion will not simply reverse. Canada's aluminum industry now has a European customer base. a CBA advantage, long-term supply agreements, and no particular incentive to return its entire production to a market that hit it with a 50% tariff and called it fair.
