College sports administrators and coaches seek collective restrictions on expenses because they cannot independently refuse to pay escalating costs; they can only say 'no' to price increases if all competitors also refuse, which requires collusion, and this collusion is only legally possible when there is sufficient market competition among institutions.

Collusion in College SportsAdded:
It's a major cop out to me because it's these you ask the question why would the administrators and the coaches want this? It's cuz they can't govern themselves. It's because they cannot help themselves. It's because the easy answer to all of this is if you're worried about escalating prices and not knowing if you have enough recurring revenue to be able to cover those in the future and thinking that your rosters are going to get 20% more expensive year over year over year, you're admitting that you can't say no.
You can't be the one to say, "No, we're not going to pay that price." You're only willing to say, "No, we're not going to pay that price" if you know all your peers and all your competitors are also going to say, "No, we can't pay that price." The only way you can accomplish that is by colluding. So, the only way you can collude legally is if there's enough competition in the market to allow certain group of people to collude.
