How Phonics Makes English Easy | Speak English Fluently Step by Step

[00:00:00]know whenever I teach somebody, so for me it's like I'm getting contentment within me. So that's why I want to start from zero level kindergarten only like preschool and I want to start from there as well. So I do believe that in our time this these things were not there, okay? And I know HOW MUCH THINGS I HAVE FACED BECAUSE I am from Hindi medium and it's not at all easy to work on your pronunciation, phonic sounds and so many things at once. So I can say whenever everybody is asking me that Indu you are working on your pronunciation, vocabulary, patterns, phrasal verbs, idioms So it's not I'm not saying nine months journey.

[00:00:32]Since I can say four to five years I have been doing this practice unintentionally. I was teaching to my daughter. So every DAY I JUST PICK UP ONE or two phonic rules to to make her understand. And now she is seven years old, she is in second grade and she can read like whatever book you would give her, she would read. And she knows that while reading but only in terms of writing that E and A SOUND SOMETIMES SHE makes mistake. Otherwise she's very good at this thing. So then I found it like for me if I want to come a teacher, so I can take the inspirations from the teachers that how they are teaching. And it's not only to spell the word, okay?

[00:01:08]Our tongue, mouth, muscle it should work like that that one sound we can teach in other different words because in English one sound is having other sounds as well. So when we are giving the >> So very good morning Kavita ji. How are you doing today?

[00:02:24]And what you said, I'm so curious because I do have kids at my home and I can feel you that as a teacher, you have like enough experience that how we can teach our kids as well. So, yeah, just curious about this session that what else I can learn from teacher.

[00:02:45]Yes. Okay, so as this is the first session, first conversation for us, could you introduce yourself to me?

[00:02:52]>> Yeah, sure. I'm delighted to introduce myself. As you know, my name is Indu. I hail from Himachal Pradesh. Presently, I'm living in Delhi. I am a mother of two beautiful daughters and devoted homemaker. In terms of my hobbies, I have variety of hobbies. Dancing is my ultimate elixir most of the time.

[00:03:13]Nowadays, spoken English is taking over everything because I want to increase my communication skills or upgrade my communication skills. And lately, I have uh created my YouTube channel by the name of Learn English with Indu because I love to interact with people. So, that's pretty much for today.

[00:03:33]>> Okay. So, do you have anything to ask me or shall I ask something to you?

[00:03:38]>> No. Yeah, feel free to ask anything. If you have anything in your mind, just go ahead.

[00:03:44]>> Yes, I have few things to ask you because I have watched a few of your videos um just uh today morning.

[00:03:52]>> Yes, please go ahead.

[00:03:54]>> Then I come to know few things about you, but I can't watch many of your videos. So, I have some doubts.

[00:04:03]And queries. Okay, let me ask. What is the biggest challenge that you have crossed in this English fluency journey?

[00:04:12]What is the biggest challenge?

[00:04:14]>> Okay.

[00:04:16]Well, when it comes to challenge, so for me that is squeeze out some time for myself. Because I do have each and everything within me. Passion, determination, perseverance, resilience, everything. It is there. I'm ready to go the extra mile. However, being a mother of toddler, it's not easy for me to wake up early in the morning and set my routine. So, yes, I can say this thing that time is a biggest challenge for me.

[00:04:46]Uh because when you are a mother of two kids, means however you have to manage each and everything for yourself and household chores, your work as well your passion about your learning.

[00:04:58]Uh because it happens that as a homemaker, it's every woman's story that means it's really hard to squeeze out some time. So, I can say that time is a biggest challenge for me. Otherwise, there is no room for anything because I am such kind of vivacious girl who is always ready to fly high for her dreams.

[00:05:20]>> Yeah, yeah. I agree with that.

[00:05:23]Yes, I totally agree with that.

[00:05:25]So, what is the easiest thing that worked for you?

[00:05:31]>> Okay. Well, when it comes to easiest thing that is my extrovert's nature.

[00:05:38]Because I do have gregarious nature and I love to interact with people. So, especially when it comes to this language, so you need good command over your communication skills as well. And I always consider that I am very good learner. I'm very good at learning new things and I can pick up things quickly. If I'm into this thing, I'm ready to burn midnight oil for that. So, for me the easiest thing that is my gregarious nature towards people and whomsoever I'm coming across, I always try to show my curiosity. That how we When you have curiosity within you, so you can adapt or learn things very quickly as compared to other learner.

[00:06:27]>> Okay, I understand. Yes, it's a great thing. And one thing I got I got in my mind when you are answering, you you said vivacious and gregarious.

[00:06:39]So, when it comes to the vocabulary part, how do you use the vocabulary if you learn new vocabulary and you are using effortlessly? How do you use that?

[00:06:51]>> Okay. Well, when it comes to vocabulary, so I can say that I am fond of very good vocabulary.

[00:06:58]So, I most of the time I try if my like co-learner or whomsoever I'm speaking, they would understand the context. So, I try to challenge myself that use good choice of vocabulary.

[00:07:12]On the flip side, if I'm like talking or I'm conducting with beginner, so I try to shift my gears as per my needs or whatever my need is there at that particular time. But in the back of my mind, I always try to consume such kind of good choice of vocabulary which I am fond of. Like idiom, phrasal verbs, patterns, advanced vocabulary specially how Priyanka Chopra she is using, how others actors because when it comes to speaking this language, only few people are using good choice of vocabulary. 70% people they are using basic English and that is also quite good. Simple English I do believe that is quite big thing because most of the learner or people they are using simple English only. However, if we are fortunate or if we are fond of good choice of vocabulary, so why not to consume? So that is my basic mantra because being a homemaker, I just want to speak like a star. So I'm just looking for that only so that I can make myself happy not to impress other but to express myself.

[00:08:26]>> That's a great thing. Yes.

[00:08:29]Okay. So when you felt satisfied in this language or you're still working on that?

[00:08:38]>> Of course, I am satisfied with my learning journey but not satiated because I do believe that this language everyday it is evolving and there are some gray areas where I am falling behind. So I need to have good grip over there as well because I am also inclined towards teaching career and I want to impart this knowledge to others as well that if you are a fond of improving your spoken English, so sometime it happens that people they are trying best. They have enough vocabulary, they have enough grammar knowledge as well. However, they are not able to speak. So I just want to clear that golden rule that only one thing would work when you are consistent with your practice everyday and you are following the right strategy, then only you can get the right result. Otherwise, if you want that you I want to prepare dosa but you are preparing the batter of wheat flour. It wouldn't come in that way. So, for only few things, whatever the nuance is there of this language, I just want to make them understand that some things needs to follow the proper way if you don't want to waste your time in terms of years because I have seen people they are wasting their years and they are not able to speak yet. So, I just want to share my personal experience with them that if you are determined enough, so you can speak or you can increase or whatever the thing you want to upgrade within yourself within few months. Only the thing is that just challenge yourself. That's it.

[00:10:22]>> Yeah, I got it. And the last question for you from my side. So, what do you want to improve more now?

[00:10:31]>> Okay.

[00:10:33]Well, there are so many things, but now I'm feeling like I am in between deep blue sea and devil.

[00:10:40]But I can say that one thing which I want that is good grip over my basic grammar. Sometime it happens that I am making mistake. I'm aware about this thing, but I want more good grip there.

[00:10:53]As well as I want no need to ramble in between because of my braces sometime my pronunciation is also going here and there. So, lately I got my braces, so it was challenging for me, but yeah, nowadays I'm trying my heart so that I can get the not clarity, but at least whatever thing I want to articulate, it should come naturally. It shouldn't take that much effort within me. And of course, there is always room for improvement when it comes to this language. I just want that like how I'm speaking Hindi because Hindi is my native language. Okay, so I just want this language should goes to my muscle memory. Okay, so that whenever I am in sleep, I walk in English, I talk in English, I have immersed myself into this language. But yeah, I shouldn't feel in that way that if I'm teaching someone, so I should teach wrong. No, I I want from my side that I should give my best foot forward.

[00:12:01]Only this thing I want to inculcate more and I do believe that consistent practice would make you better every day. So that is the only one thing.

[00:12:13]>> Yes, that's a very amazing, you know, suggestion from your side. Yeah, I really love it.

[00:12:26]>> Yes, I just want to ask one thing that I know because of your kids, you are nowadays you are taking classes at home. So I want that what is the biggest need or I can say your aim or dream that why do you want to improve your spoken English? There is any biggest why in your life to improve your spoken English? Because you are speaking quite well.

[00:12:54]I can sense you this thing.

[00:12:56]>> Yeah.

[00:12:57]Yes, I have started this journey in the year of 2019.

[00:13:01]As I have studied in English medium, I was not I mean I was not feeling that much tough to learn this language. But though I have that sense, I have that knowledge of reading, writing, but when it comes to speaking part, I I mean I was facing some struggles. But anyway, I have such motive to go beyond my limit, beyond my circle.

[00:13:28]Which means I want to work abroad. I want to live abroad.

[00:13:32]Apart from our country.

[00:13:34]I don't say that I don't like my country. I love my country.

[00:13:39]And I'm very proud of being Indian. So, but I want to live a different life apart from this. So, you know, the common stereotypical person. So, that's the main reason I want to learn English.

[00:13:55]>> Now I got the gist of the topic.

[00:13:58]And that is like nothing wrong with it.

[00:14:02]If you want to travel abroad and across the country, absolutely. Because when you have that strong why within you, okay? Like for me as well, it is a strong need for me as well. So, when we have that strong need, our brain works accord as per that, okay? According to our needs. Because for some learner, like it happens that they're saying, "We just want to interact with people."

[00:14:29]Okay? So, brain wouldn't take that much effort, okay? They would just go in means like a normal normal level. But when we are giving that strong connection, "No, we do have some strong need or desire." Okay? That burning desire is there. So, every day we are just giving that kick to our brain.

[00:14:51]That, "No, today you have to give us something different from last day." Okay? So, in this way because we do have power within our brain, okay? Our subconscious mind. That is full of power. Full of power. After reading like many books, I can say not many, but few of the books, I got to know this thing that reading could also help us in terms of speaking. Earlier I was not aware that how would reading would help us. But now I am in this habit and amazing I can say that this is the best habit I have pursued till now.

[00:15:31]>> Yes, yes.

[00:15:31]>> Yes.

[00:15:32]>> That's a very good habit. Yes, of course. Because reading is like a template that we are making in our mind.

[00:15:39]And it would automatically comes when we are speaking.

[00:15:42]>> Yes. Yes, absolutely. So my second question is that that as you have mentioned that you are taking classes for phonic, okay. So yesterday only I was trying to make my younger like elder daughter that where to put CK sound and K sound because earlier in our time it was not there, okay. So every day I am just watching few of the videos and then I'm teaching to my daughter as well. And you know you won't believe that this thing is helping me a lot in terms of my like writing work. And whenever I'm speaking I know how to do blending, how to break the word, which sound would come. Otherwise earlier for me it is like tree means tree. But now my tongue is reacting in that way. If it is short vowel, which sound will come. When long vowel is coming, which sound will come.

[00:16:37]And when the vowel is blending, okay, and where to put CK, where to put K. So I can say that this is the great things for kids. So I just want to know from your side that what is the basic mantra because my daughter is facing spelling mistake. Not that much she's improving.

[00:16:56]Still she's having few doubt that sound of E long sound of E and A. So sometime it happened to for me as well, mama it's little bit confusing. I said yes, beta but with the help of practice we'll master it. So how I can make her understand that means when spelling mistake is there so how she could get good grip over her spelling or writing part?

[00:17:22]By using phonic method.

[00:17:24]>> Yeah.

[00:17:25]I understand your question.

[00:17:27]Actually, your expression of phonics is completely as a teacher, you know, like you are just everything you are mentioning about the phonics is completely exact things. Okay, it's correct. And when it comes to the you know, the spelling part, how they are understanding and how they are reacting for this first of all, they have to go with the sounds each and every sound clearly.

[00:17:54]They can't go with the reading part as it is and they can't learn the sound. If they are learning the sound directly the e sound first and then later on if they are learning the sound, which means the short sound of then that would be a discomfort for them.

[00:18:12]So, they have to go with the short vowels first. I mean the basic sounds of the letters first and then they could go with the diagrams, which means the e sound. And we also consider that sound as a long vowel sound because as it is having two letters two letter sounds and it has one sound, they could go with the long vowel sound later on because they have to know the basics first, the beginning things.

[00:18:38]>> Yes and yes, absolutely. It's so yes, she has good grip over her basic phonic sound. Uh means she knows the blending and everything, okay? Uh so, most of the time it happens that whenever we are teaching exceptions cases are always there in English, okay? So, for her like yesterday I was teaching the shun sound, okay? Like t i o n is also shun sound and s i o n is also shun sound. So, I was just giving the grip, okay? When e letter is a letter is coming the verb ending, so you have to put this sound. S I O N and like decision, you have to put this. Mission, you have to put and we have to do the doubling rule as well.

[00:19:20]So, she was saying, "Mama, you haven't studied phonics and how you are teaching me? Like, I don't know everything, but I can teach." I always say this thing that because I am curious towards this thing and when I was doing my Montessori course, there they used to like teach us that how we can introduce phonic letters to kids. So, you know what happened? For me, it was like I was so confused like back in those days that my name start from like my name is Indu. Why I am writing my name with I letter? Why I am not writing my name with E letter?

[00:19:59]Because in our school, A B C, it was like that. Okay? So, now it is so like I can say comfortable for kids and it's very good. Seriously, I found it. If you know the basic phonic sound, no need to mug up the things. With the help of sound, students can learn very like long words as well and break the word and as many as spellings they want to write, they can write. So, it's a very good thing.

[00:20:30]>> Actually, now I understand that how you are teaching phonics. As you have completed the Montessori training, then you can Yeah, you are able to teach the phonics. Of course, I also have completed Montessori teacher training and I was working as a kindergarten teacher and a head of kindergarten. So, I know that what are the challenges that we face when students are asking about the you know, the segmenting and actually, we talked about the blending part, but we didn't talk about the segmenting part. So, the question is which is which can be used for writing. Okay? So, if we say the sound of the word, then they would be able to write that. For example, if I'm saying train, so they will understand that t r a So, in that way, they will just think of the a i would come. And so, train, so four sounds but five letters.

[00:21:31]Yes, and I can say I only started to teach my daughter. I have learned but I didn't get time to join any institute because of my family problems. But now, again, after I can say 5 years, my interest is arising again and I'm too much curious that I want to teach student because that is my first love, teaching. I don't know, whenever I teach somebody, so for me it's like I'm getting contentment within me. So, that's why I I want to start from zero level, kindergarten, only like play school and I want to start from there as well.

[00:22:11]So, I do believe that in our time, this these things were not there, okay? And I know how much things I have faced because I am from Hindi medium and it's not at all easy to work on your pronunciation, phonic sounds, and so many things at once. [00:23:39]Because in English, one sound is having other sounds as well. So, when we are giving the proper concept, that clarity is there for kids, so it is very easy for them to pick up the things as well.

[00:24:07]>> You know, even if we have completed B.Ed or M.Ed, some of the teachers, they they are struggling to teach the kids. They are unaware of the students' thinking and what they I mean, how we can segregate the student learning. Okay?

[00:24:23]Because a lot of learners are there. In a classroom, we can see a lot of learners. So, that way you are a good teacher. You could become a good teacher. I can I can tell you now.

[00:24:35]>> Thank you so much. Down in the line, I definitely join some school whenever I would get any opportunity. But, of course, after learning this language, because I do believe that we should have good grip over our basic as well. Earlier, I used to feel grammatical phobia. Whenever somebody's saying, "Now, let's take a grammar sentences and tenses test." So, for me, it was like, "Oh my god, like how would I face my fear?" But, now I can say that my love is also arising for grammar as well. It's not that difficult which people are saying this thing that it's like it's hard nut to crack. How to pick up the grammar? But, I do believe that if we are taking one step at a time and we are consistent with our journey, everything will fall into place. There is no other room for laziness when you are determined to learn something. And I always say only one thing that it shouldn't show like that you are just pretending. Just enjoy your process.

[00:25:40]Like whenever I teach to my daughter as well, and younger one, she is just 20 months old. So, for her also, she picks up the sound really well because small kids pick up things quickly. And she knows Hindi and English both. So, I'm not talking with her in English, but she knows she understands each and everything. So, I say only one thing, create your own environment for yourself, okay?

[00:26:08]What's your need? Like your need is different, my need is different, other person need is different. But, I do believe that over the period of time we need to work on our vocabulary as well.

[00:26:20]Especially when we are finding that we are at intermediate level, okay? So, from intermediate level to go C1 level, there are some technicality of this language, okay?

[00:26:33]Like phrasal verbs. Most of the time natives speakers, they are using phrases, okay? Phrases, idiom, phrasal verbs. And it happens that people are saying, "We understand English."

[00:26:45]Whenever somebody is saying, but when it comes to watching movies, we are not getting anything. Why?

[00:26:52]Because native they don't use uh like Hindi to English translation method or native language to English translation method. So, I only say one thing. Once you are feeling that you are comfortable with this language, okay? So, start increasing your vocabulary, okay? Like one sentence, for example, if we are taking one sentence, "Hey, did a good job." Okay? It's a very basic. Now, how we can translate in intermediate level, advanced level, okay? With some advanced vocabulary and with some phrases as well. So, in this way, if you want to sound like natural in English or like a native speakers, so we have to learn few of the phrases. I'm not saying all, but at least start using some patterns, phrases like day-to-day life, which is necessary. And I have seen most of the time some across the country foreigners they are using phrasal verbs more compared to idioms, okay? So, we should have at least little knowledge about that. Once we are getting hang of this thing, absolutely we are good to go to weather the storm.

[00:28:03]>> Yes, yes, I agree with that completely.

[00:28:06]So, I consider that each and every step, like you said, one step is much needed.

[00:28:12]So, I consider this one step as a one brick in a building, okay? So, if we are losing one brick in a building, then that is a hole.

[00:28:23]>> Yes.

[00:28:24]>> Okay. So, yes, of course, one brick is very much needed to come to give a complete structure of the building, right?

[00:28:32]>> Yes, absolutely true. And I just only want to say one thing like I haven't visited any foreign countries, but it's my dream to visit there. So, of course, I want to connect with them how they are speaking and how we can like share our thoughts process, our knowledge with them. And I do believe that only Indian people are means judging us. We have that mindset. When it comes to foreigners, so they are very friendly. I have seen no only in videos and a few of my friends, they gave me this suggestion that because for them it is like how we are making them understand our thought process, okay? And I do believe that once you have that environment within you, you would pick up the things quickly. No matter how much you are trying because environments plays significant role in our life, okay? And once we have everyday people are speaking in phrasal verbs, idioms, phrases, naturally you would pick up.

[00:29:39]You don't need to go the extra mile for learn these things. But for me like I am living here, so everyday I am fond of this thing that okay, today I have learned this thing, next time I'll use this. And most of the time I give this to my daughters that you would watch English content whenever they are having free time. And she she is very good at her English. She speaks really well. And sometimes she is teaching me. Mama, this is not communication, this is communication, okay? You are pronouncing it wrong. So for me it is like Oh my god, like sometimes it happens that we are learning from kids as well.

[00:30:22]>> Of course, the kids are the most biggest teachers for us actually.

[00:30:26]Uh yes, what you said is exactly correct. The foreigners, you know, I have the experience of working with the foreigners because after I have worked in Maldives as a teacher for 1 and 1/2 years, I have worked with various country teachers. So even people who is from other country like Canada and the other teachers like South Africa and Australia, US. So, many parts of the country I mean many parts of the world.

[00:30:54]So, yes I have the observation of them.

[00:30:57]Like they are very polite in nature.

[00:31:01]They actually, you know, they won't hurt us actually.

[00:31:07]They just start their conversation in a very polite way. They never try to harm us in feelings.

[00:31:15]>> Yes, and for them it is like for us we can say, "Please give me the glass of water." Like I usually say this thing, okay? But if I like say in their language, so they say, "Could you please give me the glass of water?" Like how how naturally it is coming, no? It [laughter] It is showing that politeness is there. Okay, we usually say that could, would, should these are the golden words, okay? But we people most of the time we are forgetting to use these words. Like, "Could you please open this window? Would you please open this window? Would you mind sitting there?" So, means we should know how to incorporate these words.

[00:31:58]And I always believe only one thing that one time just do only one change. No need to change whole thing, okay? Like I have to change this tenses, this, that.

[00:32:11]No. You If you have 10% your grammar knowledge about the basic tenses, we can have and we can achieve 80% our fluency with very normal and basic rules with our tenses only. Because I do believe that just show that thoughts in your words. Articulate your thoughts in a way that whatever is there in your head.

[00:32:36]Like in my mind I'm just saying, "Can you please give me the glass of water?"

[00:32:40]But it is not coming. Okay, I am I am saying in politeness. For my thought process, it is polite, but I'm not using the polite word here. Okay? So, if I'm saying, "Would you please give me the glass of water?"

[00:32:54]Automatically, like are you getting my point? How it is coming? So, I have seen that most of the time, whenever I'm watching any like English content or English web series, so people are using means golden words there.

[00:33:10]For It is like A PET WORD FOR THEM. SO, I also want to sound like natural speaker, and I also want that whatever thoughts are coming, the exact thing it should come on my words as well, my tongue as well. So, I'm working on it. I know it will take time, but yeah, just looking best version of myself.

[00:33:30]>> Yeah, but you are using that effortlessly, and those Those are the magical words that we could use every day in our conversation, because it makes us so polite and humble when we are talking with others. Of course, it is. And when we are just teaching these words to our kids, they also feel natural, and they also feel so much kind and polite in front of the other, you know, teachers or students or whomever it is.

[00:33:59]>> Yes, absolutely true. And in the last, I just want to say only one thing that kids, they don't have enough knowledge related to grammar.

[00:34:08]>> Yeah.

[00:34:08]>> However, they are speaking correct English. Have you witnessed such kind of cases? Because in my society, like lately, I have seen one girl, she is 2 years old, and I was dumbfounded like how she is speaking correct English. And for me, it is like, "Oh my god." So, I I do believe that for English, you needs only environment. You need only environment, not more than that. If you have environment, you can speak as much as you can. So, have you ever witnessed such kind of kids who speaks really well?

[00:34:44]>> Yes.

[00:34:45]Two to three years ago, I have been to UAE for job searching. So, I stayed in my friend's home and she has a kid, like two years kid actually. And she spoke very well in English. And she has I mean I can't find any grammatical mistakes in her speech.

[00:35:06]So, I found that she was I mean she was spending most of her time in seeing cartoons, you know, and some videos in English.

[00:35:16]And she is not at all watching in her language, her native language. So, that's the only reason the circumstances are creating for kids and they are able to use the grammar without knowing it is grammar.

Because they are not using >> Maybe only for hobby we could say that I have collections of vocabularies and I have the habit of collecting all those vocabularies in my diary diaries but if we are not using that if we are not implementing in our speech then that is completely waste of time.
