His Martian communicates only through symbols carved in the sand, the direct ancestor of Arrival's heptapods and Project Hail Mary's Rocky. Six months after publishing, Weinbaum died of cancer. Asimov, Clarke, and Heinlein built their careers on his one story, and many recent authors still do.
