In competitive games with risk-reward mechanics, players must balance the potential for high rewards against the risk of losing everything by going over the edge, making strategic decisions about when to take risks versus when to play conservatively based on their current position and the potential outcomes.

The Edge - Thursday 15th October 2015Added:
[applause] >> Hello [cheering] and welcome to the edge, the show where you need [applause] brains and balls. Today our players will compete to roll down these big money cash lanes. The nearer they roll to the edge, the more money they earn. Stop their ball on the edge and they'll get thousands. But go over and they get nothing. Let's meet the players who today are going to push themselves to the edge.
>> [applause] >> I'm Paul. I live in the West Midlands.
I'm a Telecom services manager and a James Bond fanatic. I'm Laura. I'm a warehouse operative from West Lothian and I've been to over 30 countries. I'm Sam from London. I'm an engineer and I used to run for Surrey. I'm Cath from Castle Donington. I'm a retired math teacher and I quiz at least once a month.
Welcome to you all and very best of luck.
In a moment you'll each take to the lanes to roll for big money. The ball you need is trapped in your podium. I'm going to ask some questions. Buzz in with the correct answer and you'll bring up your ball towards you. Once you've freed your ball, you'll roll down the shortest lane available. The shorter the lane, the bigger the edge and the better the odds of banking [music] big money. So do well on these questions to give yourself the best advantage on the lanes. Three correct answers will release your [music] ball. If everyone is ready, fingers on buzzers.
In which section of an orchestra would you expect to hear the marimba, the triangle and the tambourine? Paul.
Uh the uh uh uh Time's out, Paul. Percussion was the word you were searching for.
>> looking for. You're frozen out of the next question.
The ancient Athenian Acropolis is found in which country?
Nora, Greece. Correct.

Sam. 1992. Correct.
Of which plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament was Guy Fawkes Cath? The Gunpowder Plot.
It was the Gunpowder Plot. It's a correct answer and it's released your ball, Cath. You're rolling first on THE GREEN LANE.
>> [applause] [music] [applause] >> SO, QUICK AS THE LANES, CATH. Was that the plan? Yes. Yeah. It was the best lane I did in the practice round, so You had to get the green lane.
>> Yes. Well, hit the edge on round one and it's worth £1,500.
>> [applause] >> YOU'LL EACH have one roll to earn as much as you can. Whoever earns the least is leaving us. So, where did you get up to on the green lane? Well, actually I had two edges and two over the top, so Okay, so you know you can hit the edge.
Yeah, I do. Yes. Are you ready? Yes, thank you. Let's roll.
Hello and good afternoon. First on the green lane, Cath from Castle Donington.
She's looking very focused, crouching into position. Much more steady. And the roll looks good.
And it scores you £900.
>> [applause] >> Happy with that?
Yes, it's it's something to put the others to aim at. I would have liked a little bit further on, but uh I'm happy to get there and not stay up go off the edge. Three lanes still up for grabs and we've reset the podiums. Fingers on buzzers.
The characters Martin Chuzzlewit, Little Dorrit and Edwin Drood were all created by which author?
Laura, Charles Dickens. Correct.
In which mountain range is Ben Nevis located?
Laura, Scotland.
In which mountain range >> Oh.
It's the Grampian Mountains. Laura.
>> Oh. You're frozen out. Next question.
>> You're frozen out of the next question.

Paul, Russia. Correct.
You're back in the game, Laura.
Which rock star was born Farrokh Bulsara?
Laura.
>> Freddie Mercury. Correct. You're a fan, I take it. Uh, yeah. One more correct answer, Laura, and you'll roll next on the blue lane.
What name for junk email is also a type of canned meat? Laura, spam. Correct.
You've released your ball. You're rolling next on THE BLUE LANE.
>> [music and applause] >> SO, LAURA, TO GUARANTEE YOUR PLACE in the next round, you need to roll 950 lb or more. How did it go in the blue lane in practice? It didn't. That was the worst lane.
But I wanted to get some questions right, so I'm quite happy. Never know.
Well, it's it's one of the shorter lanes. It's got a reasonable sized edge there, worth 1,500 lb. Are you ready, Laura? I am.
Let's roll.
While high stakes operative Laura isn't bursting with confidence, can this roll settle her nerves?
She's giving it a good nudge. Is it too much or is it going to stop? Is it going to stop?
Oh, Laura, IT LOOKED LIKE YOU'D GIVEN it just about the right amount of weight there, but it went over the edge. Told you. Got it.
Well, Well, roll scores you nothing.
But, it's not all over yet. And if the lane was an inch longer, Laura.
>> [laughter] >> You'd have got £1,500. It's a fine line, isn't it? An inch in that case between £1,500 and zero. But, it does mean that Cath, you are definitely going through to the next round.
So, only two lanes left. Whichever one of you releases your ball next will be rolling on the yellow lane. The other will be left with the red lane. Fingers on buzzers.
The Lake Mead Reservoir is formed by which famous dam?
Paul. Hoover. Correct.
Dragged from the recesses of your mind somewhere.
Who was the original host of Big Brother UK?
Paul. Davina McCall. Correct. You need one more correct answer to release your ball.
In 1770, Captain James Cook first landed at Botany Bay in which modern-day country? Sam.
United States. Incorrect. It's Australia. You're frozen out of the next question, so the floor is yours, Paul.
You do not have to answer this if you don't know it. If you do and you're correct, you'll be rolling next on the yellow lane.
Who composed the ballet The Nutcracker?
Paul. Tchaikovsky. Correct. You've released your ball. You'll be rolling on the yellow lane. Sam, you've been left with the red lane.
>> [applause] [music] >> So, Paul, all the general knowledge came flooding back to you there.
>> All of a sudden it came to me, yes.
>> Yes. It's left to you with the yellow lane.
And to guarantee your place in the next round, you need £100 or more. You've just got to hit a cash zone. Okay. And Laura will have to sweat a little bit longer.
So, how did it go in the yellow lane in practice?
Uh it was one of my favorite lanes actually. Uh Cath's got the uh the green lane which I was really also fairly consistent on. But, this is uh this is good for me. I'm happy with this one, yeah. Hit a cash zone and you're through. What are you going to aim for?
Um I'm going to go middle for diddle, basically. Just nice and nice and safe in the middle. Okay. Yeah. Are you ready, Paul? Yeah. Let's roll.
Chance for Paul to ease into the game.
All he has to do is hit a cash zone.
Sounds easy, doesn't it?
Deep breath to compose himself, and he's off.
It's going to reach the cash zones. It is reaching the cash zones.
And it scores YOU £350.
>> [applause] >> SO, YOU'RE joining [cheering] Cath in the next round, Paul. You did just about enough there.
>> Just about enough, yeah.
>> Yeah. Not a particularly huge amount to bank, but you're safe.
You're not, Laura.
Surprise.
Your only hope now is if Sam fails Come on, Sam.
fails to register anything on the cash zones. If he's short, which is possible on the red lane, or if he goes a little bit too long, and he goes over the edge.
How did it go for you, Sam, in practice?
The red lane was okay, but it could have been a lot better. Anything from £100 up to the edge will do.
Are you ready, Sam? I'm ready. Let's roll.
That's the heckling from Laura.
With Sam off, he's looking calm. Laura's only hope is if this goes wrong for him.
No. It's got a bit of weight. It's got a bit of weight. It's tipping over the cash zones.
And it scores you £450.
>> [applause] >> Yeah.
Enough. Could have been enough. Enough.
Okay. Well, I can tell you, after those rolls, Cath, you have £900.
Paul, you have £350. Sam, you have £450.
Laura, you have nothing. So, Cath, Paul, and Sam, you're through to the next round. Please return TO YOUR PODIUMS.
>> [applause] >> UNFORTUNATELY, LAURA, YOU had the least amount of money in that round, so I'm afraid you're leaving here with nothing.
And we didn't get to find out any of these countries that you visited.
>> [laughter] >> And perhaps where you could have gone Hello. if you got yourself to the final, but alas, it wasn't meant to be, I'm afraid.
Thanks for playing. Thank you. Bye-bye.
Bye.
>> [applause] >> So, congratulations, Cath, Sam, and Paul. You've made it through to the next round. And Paul, I need to know a little bit more about your James Bond obsession. Yeah, I loved it. Yeah, I grew up with it. Coming from Southend, of course, if you didn't know, Goldfinger was shot at Southend Airport, or a very small portion of the film was filmed at Southend Airport for a couple of days.
Um which is a bit where uh Goldfinger's cars loaded into the aircraft. Oh, that bit, yeah.
>> That bit, of course. You knew that. I knew that, yeah.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was always wondering which airport Which Which regional airport, I thought to myself, was that filmed at? A- A- And if if you're really geeky like me, uh there is a scene where James Bond flicks the uh center console of the Aston Martin, and the map actually says Southend Airport. And what else do you do in your spare time? Uh play a bit of pinball when I get the chance, as well. There is a a UK pinball league that I have been known to play with.
>> There is a UK Sorry, did you say there's There is a UK pinball league?
>> Yes. So, there's a bunch of guys that will get together at people's houses, locations, um uh to actually play competitions.
Sam, tell us about the kind of engineering that you work in. Um so, I work in uh pharmaceutical industry, and uh we make uh different various types of antibiotics.
Um so, my job effectively is to find ways to make the process more efficient um and more cost-effective, really. What else do you get up to, Sam?
Um so, in my spare time, uh I like to play a few sports. I play rugby, athletics, do a bit of jogging, and then spend quite a lot of time with the family, as well. Cath, it's no surprise, really, you got yourself on the green lane, because you are a quiz mistress.
Well, I wouldn't say that. Local pub quizzes, sort of couple of times a month, but there are, you know, a few sort of local ones I do with my daughter. I like doing it with my daughter cuz she likes she knows and likes all the modern things and I >> So, you segue together your knowledge very well.
>> Absolutely. Yes. Yes. Does everyone want to have Cath on their team?
Um yes.
>> [laughter] >> Am I allowed to say that? What kind of things would you win in these pub quizzes? Sunday lunch for two.
A round of drinks. [laughter] Nothing Nothing major, really. No. And and you win occasionally? Yeah, we have done. Yes. Yes. Not on a regular basis, but we have. Yes.
Good stuff. The money you earned is added to your personal bank. So, Paul, you have £350.
Sam, you have £450. And Cath, you have £900. But only one of you can reach today's final and play for that money.
Round two.
And we're shutting down the shortest lane.
And now we're introducing danger zones, meaning any of the cash zones from £100 all the way up to £1,300 could become a danger zone. If that happens, its value drops to [music] zero.
How many danger zones you face depends on how well you do on the questions.
Release your ball first and not only will you take the shortest lane with the biggest edge, but no danger zones.
[music] This time you'll need to answer four questions correctly to release your ball. So, fingers on buzzers.
Which universal force of attraction keeps the planets in orbit around the sun?
Paul.
>> Gravity. Correct.
What is the more common name of the Italian artist born Tiziano Vecellio?
Cath. Titian. Correct.
Which island prison turned tourist attraction is located in San Francisco Bay?
Cath. Alcatraz.
>> Correct.

Sam.
30s.
Close, 20s. I'm afraid you're frozen out of the next question. Which TV show starred Richard Ayoade as geeky genius Maurice Moss? Paul. The IT Crowd.
Correct, Paul. Said that with great pride.
>> Oh, yeah. I'm a a geek with a personality.
>> [laughter] >> Sam, you're back in the game. What Spanish dish made from rice, saffron, Paul. Paella.
And either shellfish or meat is cooked in a large flat frying pan of the same name, it's paella, correct.
Whichever of you answers a question correctly next will release your ball, Cath and Paul. The vertebrae make up which major part of the human Cath. The spine.
Human skeleton it is, the spine, correct. You've released your ball and you're rolling first on THE BLUE LANE.
>> [music] [applause] >> SO, CATH.
YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN.
GOT HERE FIRST.
>> No pressure.
>> [laughter] >> Your general knowledge coming to the fore once more earning you the biggest edge and the shortest lane and no danger zones. The nicest thing. Get your ball on the edge in this round and it's WORTH £2,000.
>> [applause] >> YOU NEED TO HAVE TWO ROLLS which [cheering] will be added together.
Whoever earns the least is leaving us.
£900 on the green lane, Cath. Mhm. A good roll to get you going. Mhm. A little bit further to go this time.
And an edge that's worth quite a bit more.
Where are you going to go for?
I'm going to try and put a little bit more in and hope to get towards the edge even if So long as I don't go off the end. Okay, Cath. If you're ready, let's roll.
First on the lanes again, can retired maths teacher Cath make the right calculations to hit the edge? It's very tentative.
It's very very tentative, but it goes a bit higher and it stops AT £650.
>> [applause] >> OF COURSE, you still have another roll.
>> Mhm. So, you can add to that, but how you feeling after your first roll? Um I would have liked a little bit more, but at least I know they've got danger zones, so it may put a little bit more pressure on them. We shall see. There are two lanes left. We've reset the podiums. Whichever of you releases your ball next will roll on the yellow lane.
The other will be left with the red lane. And you'll both be facing danger zones. Fingers on buzzers.
Which Irvine Welsh novel shares its title with a hobby involving documenting the numbers of locomotives?
Sam. Trainspotting. Correct.
In which 2003 rom-com does Hugh Grant play a prime minister?
Sam.
Is it Love Actually? Correct. Just in the nick of time.
Before being succeeded by Mary Tudor, who was nominally the Queen of England for nine days in 1553?
Paul. Mary.
Incorrect. Lady Jane Grey. You're frozen out of the next question.
>> What fruit is chiefly used to make a traditional Eve's pudding?
Sam.
An apple. Correct, Sam.
You need one more correct answer to release your ball. What is the first two-digit prime number?
Sam.
Three.
Two-digit. Two-digit.
Sorry, Sam. It's 11. You're frozen out of the next question.
Renzo Piano and Norman Foster are famous names in which creative field?
Paul. Musical.
Architecture.
You're frozen out of the next question, Sam. You're back in and you still need one more correct answer to release your ball. Can't get going in this game, Paul. No.
If I wore a ring made purely from the precious metal with the chemical symbol PT, Sam. Platinum.
Correct. The ring would be made from platinum. Congratulations, you're rolling next on the yellow lane. Paul, you've been left with the red lane.
>> [applause] [music] [applause] >> So, a change of fortune for you, Sam.
Yeah, that round was a lot better than the first for me, yeah. Those math questions causing you problems.
>> Yeah, schoolboy error that was.
>> [laughter] >> See Cath for extra lessons.
Well, Sam, you're going to face one danger zone here on the yellow lane. So, before you roll, we need to find out where that danger zone will be and it's moving up and down your lane. It will only stop when you press that button there. Good luck.
>> [clears throat] [music] >> Ooh, £200 has gone from your lane. It's replaced with zero.
Yeah, it's good that it's one of the low numbers. I'm happy.
Yeah. You're going to go big on this one? Going to, yes. Definitely that's the plan.
Okay.
Where are you going for? Four figures?
Ideally, yeah. I hope as close as possible to four figures, yeah.
Let's see how you do then. Let's roll.
The danger zone is in the perfect place for Sam aiming for four figures.
He's getting down low. Not sure that's going to get to four figures, but it is over your danger zone and it's crept up to TO £400.
>> [applause] >> DID THE DANGER ZONE put you off there, Sam, a bit?
Yeah, I think I don't think it did. I think I just didn't gauge it right. Mhm.
Mhm.
Okay, Paul.
You have two danger zones to contend with in the red lane. So, before you roll, we need to find out where those danger zones will be.
Now, they are moving up and down. Same deal. Press the button and they'll stop.
And they've stopped on £900 and £350.
How does that look from where you're standing? Uh not too bad. It's in the middle. So, uh it's as good as it's going to get. Does that mean you're going to go in the middle section? In the middle section. I mean, yeah. Got to go for it.
You look a bit defeated there cuz you're in the red lane. I did really bad that round. Just couldn't believe it. Just brain empty.
>> Paul, you've you've done nothing yet.
You're still in the game. So, the red lane is ultimately where you want to end up, isn't it?
>> Uh yeah. Yeah.
>> is practice for the final.
>> It is. It features in every round. So, if nothing else, it's good practice.
Yeah. Paul, where are you going for?
It's Cath's on 650. So, I need to get I I I Anything above that is great for me.
Okay. Do my best.
License to roll, Paul. Uh-huh.
Let's roll.
Paul needs to forget about the questions now and focus on the red lane.
Deep breath.
Little pep talk.
If he rolls right here, he could take the lead.
Good weights. It's gone over the first danger zone. Creeping up towards the second and it stops ON £650.
>> [applause] >> YOU'RE THANKING somebody Yeah.
>> up there. Yes, definitely. Yeah. Um Daniel Craig, Roger Moore. Yeah. Yeah, Roger Moore definitely looking over my shoulder there, I think. Yeah, definitely. Before everyone rolls again, let's have a look at what you've earned so far. Cath, you You £650. Sam, you have £400 and Paul, YOU HAVE £650.
>> [applause] >> SO, CATH, HAVE YOU done the maths? I have, yeah. [laughter] What do you need?
As much as I can, really. Pressure's on, isn't it? One's equal to me, one's not that far behind, so So, you're going to push it up to the edge? Got Got to try and go for a bit more here, yes, I think so. Okay, if you're ready, Cath, let's roll.
Cath has worked out what she needs, with the competition heating up, it's her last chance to make her roll count.
Ooh, it's got a lot of weight on it, but it looks like it's slowing down. It is slowing down. Where's it going to stop?
It scores you £1,300. WE'LL ADD THAT [applause] TO YOUR PREVIOUS TOTAL, giving you £1,950, Cath.
>> [applause] >> There we go.
Wow, that was a good time to pull out a big roll, Cath.
>> It was. Now, you're doing the maths and working out what the others need [laughter] to do.
And Sam, you need £250 to stay in the game.
To go above Cath, you need to hit the edge.
Your danger zone stays where it is, on £200.
Where are you going to aim your ball for?
I've got no choice but to get as high as I can.
If you're ready, Sam. I'm ready. Let's roll.
It's simple for Sam. He has to land on a big cash amount for a chance to stay in the game.
A very good, solid stance, but will the roll match?
It's gone over the danger zone, and it's stopping on £600. Added to your first roll, it gives you A TOTAL OF £1,000.
>> [applause] >> IS THAT GOING TO BE enough to get you through?
Let's wait and see. Well, we know Cath is definitely through to the next round.
Congratulations to you, Sam.
Small margin there, just ahead of Paul.
There are two danger zones on your lane, of course, 900 and 350 pounds.
400 pounds would see you through, Paul. Yeah.
So, right in the middle again. Are you ready?
Yeah.
Let's roll.
400 pounds pushed Paul through. Looks like he's in the zone. Anxious look from Sam, though.
He knows Paul can do this.
He pulls the trigger. Smooth roll. It's a big roll. Is it going to slow down in time? Is it going to end up in the right area of the board?
>> yeah.
>> Gives you 1,100 pounds, added to your previous ROLL, GIVING [applause] YOU A TOTAL of 1,750 pounds.
YOU LOOK QUITE CHUFFED WITH THAT, PAUL.
ABSOLUTELY. Pulled it out of the bag.
Absolutely. Way to go. With those two rolls added together, Cath, you have 1,950 pounds. Paul, you have 1,750 pounds. Sam, you have 1,000 pounds, which means Cath and Paul, you're through to the next round. Please return TO YOUR PODIUMS.
>> [applause] >> WELL, UNFORTUNATELY, [applause] SAM, YOU'VE EARNED THE LEAST amount of money in that round, so I'm afraid you're leaving here with nothing but hopefully some good memories.
Thank you. Thanks for playing. Goodbye.
Bye.
>> [applause] >> Congratulations, Paul and Cath. You're through to the next round. And Paul, a real lesson learned for you there, because your shoulders were down. You looked despondent on the red lane.
>> I managed to pull it out of the bag, though, but Cath's so good on those questions. Just Well, she is, but it shows you when you get down to the lanes, things can change.
>> Yeah. And it's not over until it's over.
Exactly. Who's watching you at home today? That'll be my wife, Dawn, and my daughter, Ava. How old is Ava? Uh Ava is 11, so she's going to big school now.
And is she the absolute apple of your eye? Uh yeah, she's going to hate me for saying this, but she is a miracle of science to me. She's a IVF baby. Has she given you any advice about today? Just win that cuz otherwise you're not coming back in the house.
Cath, what else do you get up to in your spare time?
Ooh, well, I love anything to do with animals or sports. So, put the two together and my passion is horse racing, really. My granddad used to take me in my summer holidays when I was younger. Somehow he always seemed to know people. He was always disappearing around the stable block and getting tips. So, he was >> [laughter] >> So, perhaps that's where your mathematical mind developed.
>> and the odds, yeah. Could be. Yeah. Good stuff. The money you earned is added to your personal bank. So, Paul, you now have £2,100. Cath, you have £2,850.
That money is safely banked for the final should you manage to get there.
Round three.
And we're shutting down another lane.
In this round there's only one danger zone and the first player to release their ball will control it and can place it anywhere on their opponent's lane.
You'll need five correct answers to release your ball. Fingers on buzzers.
Who was Kirsty Young's predecessor as presenter of Radio 4's Desert Island Discs?
Cath. Is it Sue Lawley? Correct.
Which city's airport has the international code LAX? Cath. Los Angeles.
>> Correct.
Traditionally, cricket bats are made from which wood?
Paul. Willow.
>> Correct.
What do you get if you add together the number of days in July and August?
Cath. 62. Correct.
Took you about half a millisecond, Cath.
>> [laughter] >> If I had a part in the play subtitled The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, [music] in which play, Cath? Sweeney Todd. In which play would I be? Sweeney Todd is correct.
Out of the traps quickly. You need one more correct answer to release your ball. It's good. Which letter precedes the word day in the name given to the 6th of June, 1944, when Allied forces landed in Normandy?
Cath. D-Day. Correct. You've released your ball. You'll be rolling first on the yellow lane. Paul, you've been left with the red lane.
>> [applause] [music] [applause] >> Cath, you barely gave Paul time to lift his hand towards the buzzer.
So quick there. I was lucky with the question.
Well, every time you have had the shortest lane with the biggest edge. And get your ball on the edge in this round, Cath, and it's WORTH £3,000.
>> [applause] >> YOU'VE GOT THREE rolls that will be added together. Whoever earns the most money in this round will be through to the final.
Cath, you're going to roll first.
You've had some big rolls. You've had £1,300.
You know how to get your ball up there towards the edge. Is it time to start banking some really big sums here, Cath?
Be nice.
>> [laughter] >> Are you ready?
Yeah. Let's roll.
Cath is a strong contender as she takes control of the lanes first yet again.
Can she keep hitting those four figures?
It's got a good weight. Is it too much?
Or is it going to stop? Is it going to stop? Is it going to stop? No, it's over the edge. And it scores you nothing.
Do you think this is the problem with moving lanes >> Yes, definitely. This is where I think Paul will have the advantage cuz he's been on the longer lanes all the time, yeah. Well, you control a danger zone now, and you can put it anywhere on Paul's lane from 100 to 1,300 pounds.
Where are you going to choose? Um I think I'll go 1,000.
£1,000. Why?
Uh well, hopefully that will keep him shorter in the shorter money cuz it's making that top end a little bit more smaller for him to aim at, less attractive.
Okay, let's strike out a thousand pounds from the red lane. That is now worth zero.
To be avoided at all costs, Paul, as is going over the edge and failing to reach the cash zones. But, you did very well on the red lane last time. Getting used to this. Yeah.
Is the danger zone going to be a problem for you?
Uh, no, consistently I'm trying to find my consistency and uh, I'm going to stay just well away from that. I'm going to be and edge averse as well. Not even going to go that far up the table.
You're just looking for lower figures to kind of keep ticking over. Consistency through the three Okay. balls. Are you ready? Yeah.
Let's roll.
Full of confidence from his last roll, clearly he wants to play it safe again.
Let's give him a big deep breath, getting composed, and even a small pep talk there as well.
Well, it's heading up towards the higher numbers. Is it going to stop ON 900 POUNDS?
>> [applause] >> A LITTLE BIT OF PANIC INSIDE OF THERE, PAUL. IT WAS GOING TO GO INTO the danger zone.
>> No, that's exactly where I wanted it to be. Okay.
Who's Skip, by the way, Paul? Skip, that's my nickname.
That's your nickname?
>> Yeah, Skippy. That's my nickname.
>> you named the balls Skippy.
>> [laughter] >> No, that's me.
>> yourself a pep talk. Well, we've seen you talk out loud quite a lot. Yeah, I talk to myself, yeah.
>> Yeah.
A lot. All right, Skip. After that first roll, I can tell you Cath has nothing and Paul has 900 pounds.
>> [applause] >> So, time for your second roll, Cath.
Have you worked out the maths?
>> [laughter] [snorts] >> Yeah, it's not difficult to see.
>> [laughter] >> No, he's definitely put the the on there getting higher up in the lane. I have to say that's that's a difficult one really. Are you ready? Yes. Let's roll.
Pressure is on Cath. Paul is urging for her to go over the edge.
Can't she stand the game with a big rule?
It's got a good weight. It's heading up the board. It's heading towards four figures and it stops on £1,300. Well, that's your first roll GIVES YOU £1,300.
>> [applause] >> SECOND TIME YOU'VE rolled that, Cath, and you pulled the game back round.
And you've got a choice.
Based on what you've just rolled there, do you want to keep that danger zone where it is in Paul's lane or would you like to move it?
I think I'll move it a little bit forward cuz he he got 900, didn't he? I think I'll put it on 900. Okay.
So, we're going to take 900 out of your lane. It is now worth zero, Paul.
You can't land there again.
So, has that caused you any problems? Is it a Is it a mental block for you that one?
>> [sighs] >> It's It's okay. I'm I'm okay with it.
I'm okay.
400 means you hang on there with Cath and go into your third and final roll level.
Are you ready? Yes. Let's roll.
Pressure is back on Paul and the tension is immense. There's nothing between these two.
Skip.
See what skip's got in him this time.
Slowing down as it hits the cash zone.
Where's it going to stop? Well, it's gone over the 400.
It stops on £500 giving you a total of £1,400.
>> [applause] >> Okay, after that second roll, Cath, you have £1,300 and Paul, YOU HAVE £1,400.
>> [applause] >> BUT IT'S TIED INTO THE third and final roll this round.
And there is so little in it, Cath.
Nothing you can do will guarantee you through to the next round right now. So, what are you going to do?
Well, I would be happy with what I got on the last roll. So, hopefully nearer that than what I did on the first one.
Okay, you ready? Yes. Let's roll.
Can Cath get that muscle memory working yet again? This is her chance to knock Paul out of the game.
Oh.
That was terrible.
It's not big.
Oh, dear.
It stops on 550, giving you a total of 1,850 lb.
>> [applause] >> So, it's not guaranteeing you anything at this stage of the game. And it shows you, doesn't it, that missing out on a score with your first roll Yeah. has put you in a precarious position.
>> So, do you want to keep the danger zone where it is on 900 or are you going to move it for Paul's final roll? I think I might just bring it to 800.
You're going to move it down a couple of cash zones. Let's do that then and put it on 800 lb.
What are you thinking?
Well, if he tries to keep this side of it just in order to get enough, maybe maybe he'll go on the naught or maybe he'll go for past it and roll off. Well, 500 lb or more Paul would do it for you.
Yeah, but it's uh it's quite tight up to where the danger zone is. Mm. Is that bothering you? Yeah, this is not James Bond. This is Mission Impossible now.
>> [laughter] >> Okay, are you ready?
>> [sighs and gasps] >> As I'm ever going to be, yes. Let's roll.
Now, this is the decider and nothing is impossible.
It's in Paul's hands tonight.
Deep in thought, a composed breath to calm the adrenaline.
And here comes the roll.
Will it be good enough?
>> Oh, no.
Short.
No, it's big. It's big. It's big enough.
It's £600. We add that TO YOUR PREVIOUS TOTAL GIVES YOU [applause] £2,000.
WITH THREE ROLLS ADDED TOGETHER, Cath has £1,850.
Paul has £2,000, which means Paul, you take what you've earned through to today's final. Please return TO THE PODIUM.
>> [applause] >> CATH, IN [cheering] SPITE OF YOUR GREAT GENERAL KNOWLEDGE, in the end the numbers didn't stack up for you.
>> Too tentative. Well, I'm afraid you had the least amount of money in that round, so you're leaving here with nothing. But hopefully the experience will stand you in good stead in your pub quizzes. Yes, I'm sure it will.
Thanks so much for playing, Cath.
>> Thank you. Goodbye.
>> [applause] >> Congratulations, Paul. You've made it through to the final where you're playing for all the money you've earned today, a total of £4,100.
>> [applause] >> FIRST THINGS FIRST, what's Skip all about? Skip, Skippy. It's my nickname and has been for about 30-odd years.
>> Why? It's to do with an old beat-up company car that got handed down to me and I was so proud of it. Uh but it had a very weird fault.
It would only go around right-hand bends.
If you put it around a left-hand bend, it would just cut out. Skip, skip, skip like that. And the name of the car stuck with me. My friends, my family all know me as Skip or Skippy. I I hardly ever get called Paul.
So, what are you going to spend the money on then? Uh looking to get um pinball table. A pinball table?
>> Yep. One of my very own, rather than playing somebody else's. It's the final.
And we're shutting [music] down one more lane.
Which leaves only the red lane. We've removed the cash values from that lane, leaving only the edge, [music] which is now worth all the money you've earned today. Stop your ball on the edge and you'll win £4,100.
Go over the edge and [music] you get nothing. But, you have a chance to make it easier for yourself by answering some more questions.
>> [music] >> Each correct answer increases the size of the edge. The more questions you get right, the bigger the edge will [music] be and the easier your final roll.
You'll have 75 seconds to get as many right as you can. Is everything clear?
>> [music] >> Yes.
Let's put 75 seconds on the clock. Your time will start when I've read the first question.
Which author wrote the classic 19th century novel Middlemarch?
Pass. George Eliot.
What is the name of the largest public park in Manhattan? Central Park.
>> Correct.
In the title of the music magazine NME, what does the E stand for?
E Express. Correct.
If I was speaking Manx on the island where it originated, >> Isle of Man. Correct.
Which team of heroes fights against the villains Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd?
Pass. Power Rangers.
>> Yes. What football club did Harry Kane join in 2004?
West Ham. Tottenham Hotspur.
How many faces does a dodecahedron have?
Uh 10. 12.
Which natural phenomenon that begins with W is a swirling body of water?
Uh whirlpool. Correct.
Released in 2008, what was the name of Coldplay's first UK number one Viva la Vida?
From what suit of playing cards is the queen in Alice in Wonderland?
Uh queen hearts. Correct.
What G is a clarified unsalted butter used in Indian cooking?
>> Ghee. Correct.
If I was posing for Annie Leibovitz, what would she be using to capture my image?
Uh paintbrush. Camera.
Often orange or brown, what A is [music] used to describe fossilized We are out of time. Fossilized tree resin is amber, but Paul, I can tell you you answered six questions correctly.
TO SEE WHAT THAT SCORE HAS DONE TO THE [applause] EDGE, LET'S TAKE TO THE lanes for the final time.
You look like you are physically spent there, Paul.
>> Oh, I am absolutely drained.
>> [laughter] >> There's 11 and 1/2 m of red lane before you, but it will look very different in a moment because every one of your correct answers increases the size of your edge. So, let's put them onto your lane.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
FIVE. SIX.
>> [applause] >> IS IT THE KIND OF EDGE THAT'S MAKING YOU FEEL CONFIDENT, PAUL?
It's making me feel very scared.
Um it it's good. I I'd like to have got a few more, actually. Two two or three more, I would have been a lot lot happier.
This is tough for me. Well, you have a choice to make. You can roll for the full £4,100 with only one ball and one attempt to hit the edge, or you could take two balls, but that means you'll say goodbye to half the money. You'll roll for £2,050, or you can take three balls. That's three attempts to hit the edge, but you'll be playing for a third of the money, which we're calling £1,367.
Does that help seeing those figures there?
>> [laughter] >> Not at all. Well, you have been inside Yeah.
>> that edge Yeah. I've been there or thereabouts pretty much every time I've played this lane.
As much experience as anyone I can remember in that red lane, actually, turning up for the final.
What are you thinking?
I want to walk away with something, so I'm going to go for two.
Two balls, definitely. [music] Yeah? Is that what James Bond would do?
No, he would go for the 4,000 and live dangerously. [music] It's money penny, but um >> [laughter] >> I'm going to go and uh give myself a second chance at [music] the 2,000. So, you're taking two balls and you're rolling FOR 2,050 POUNDS.
>> [applause] >> OF COURSE ME, PAUL.
YOU WILL only roll twice.
Oh, I see what you did there.
>> [laughter] >> It's time to take on the edge for 2,050 pounds, Paul. Let's roll.
It's getting It's time first one first.
>> [music] >> Looks big. It looks like it might be too heavy.
It's heavy, Paul. It's gone over the edge.
But, that skip is the reason you took two balls. Yeah. You've not got to get yourself into a state of despair here because the reason you took two balls was to allow yourself that kind of roll. You've got it out of your system. Yeah.
You've rolled six times now, Paul, on the red lane and four times you've been within that edge.
You can do this.
Don't let your shoulders drop too much.
Shoulders back.
Okay.
Head up.
Are you ready? Yes.
It's time to take on the edge for the final time for 2,050 pounds. Let's roll.
>> [music] >> It's got good weight.
Is it going to be >> Stop there. too big?
>> Please stop steps.
>> Is it going to stay? It's going to stay.
It's not.
>> [applause] >> So many times you rolled a lot of times on the floor. You got some [cheering] great rolls, but it wasn't to be. You weren't able to hit the edge there. So sadly, Paul, you're going home empty-handed, but you've been a fantastic contestant.
>> Thank you. Take any positives from this?
Yeah, more practice.
>> [laughter] >> Thank you so much, Paul. We'll be back next time with more new contestants pushing themselves to the edge. Why?
Because that's how we roll. Bye-bye.
>> [music] [applause] [music]
