Nevertheless, Maverick County supervisors quickly withdrew their endorsement of Mr. Alvarez in the race for sheriff, suddenly leaving incumbent Sheriff Grant Johnson in excellent position to reclaim the seat that he and his family have controlled for over 30 years.
