The Right Parkinson’s Treatment Can Change Everything | Prof. Dr. Rupam BorgohainAdded:
[music] >> For a good life in Parkinson's disease, there are two or three essential points.
One of them is that you need to keep looking after your body in the form of exercise. This is very much required.
And initial years, you can manage in Parkinson's disease either levodopa therapy or dopaminergic agonists. Now, as things go on, then a good life can become a little difficult. Your rigidity may increase, your tremor may increase, off [music] states may increase. And as this happens more and more, then the medicine's effect comes down. Comes down what was initially working, the tablet which was working for 6 hours can come down to 5 hours, 4 hours, 3 hours, and 2 hours. Now, to get a good life, most of the patients take one tablet just before what some activity. Suppose [music] you need to play a game of tennis. Suppose you need to play game of badminton or go swimming, they take another tablet. Or you have a function, you can take an [music] additional tablet. That helps with the good life. Secondly, as the disease progresses, to get a good [music] life, you must get surgery done early. After 4 years or so, they find that they can continue with playing, with jogging, with playing tennis, playing music, and doing operations.
Doctors are operating, [music] people are heading IBM teams. So, you can get your good life back. People who have become withdrawn because of Parkinson's disease, they [music] actually stop socializing. They They stop interacting with other people. All this can be sorted out by taking the appropriate therapy and taking the right decision early. You don't have to be housebound.
You don't have to be withdrawn. What you need is actually getting your therapy right properly. So, we have seen patients. People have come here the day after joining their MD radiology course in NIMS, got operated, and going back and completing the course. There are other doctors who come at 82 years of age, >> [music] >> and they're also getting back and seeing patients. So, you get a good life by doing all this. There is no shortage of ways to get a good life in Parkinson's disease. Thank you.
