Your Texts Are FINALLY Private! Apple Just Encrypted RCS on iPhone

[00:00:00]Every text you've ever sent to an Android user from your iPhone completely unencrypted. Anyone could read it. Well, as of yesterday, Apple finally fixed that and it only took them, checks notes, 2 years.

[00:00:14]Apple just dropped iOS 26.5 and the headliner feature is end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging.

[00:00:21]If you don't know what that means, basically, when you text an Android user from an iPhone, those messages used to be sent with zero encryption, like a postcard anyone could read. Now they're locked. A new lock icon shows up in your RCS chats to prove it. Here's the deal.

[00:00:37]Apple added RCS support back in iOS 18 in late 2024, replacing the ancient SMS protocol. That gave us typing indicators, read receipts, and high-res photos across platforms. Cool. But the encryption part, totally missing. Your iMessages to other iPhones were encrypted this whole time, but text to Android, wide open.

[00:00:57]Apple and Google have been working together on a cross-industry effort to bake encryption into the RCS standard itself. They announced the plan back in March 2025, started beta testing with iOS 26.4 earlier this year, and now it's live for everyone in iOS 26.5.

[00:01:13]It's enabled by default. You don't even have to flip a switch. Though if you're curious, you can find the toggle in settings, messages, RCS messaging. Right now it's still labeled beta and works with major US carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon with more carriers rolling out over time. Android users just need the latest Google Messages app. This is low-key massive. Billions of cross-platform texts are now private by default. No third-party app needed, just the stock messaging apps on both sides. It also means the green bubble versus blue bubble debate just lost its best argument. Green bubbles are encrypted now, too. The culture war continues, but at least it's a secure one.
