Franzen articulately captures the psychological friction between our biological needs and the artificiality of modern systems. It is a sobering reminder that "insanity" is often just a logical reaction to an illogical world.

I understand why people go legit insane, like I just get itAdded:
The older I get, the less I judge. When I was a kid walking down the street and I would see the homeless man that was acting crazy, I would look at that guy and be like, "That guy's weird." And now I look at that guy and I'm like, he might be on to something. He might actually be the only one that is acting reasonable here. In this fake world, there are fake people, fake jobs, fake identities, you know, uh fake pursuits.
like everything is so manufactured and artificial that you sort of go crazy and when you're a kid you're kind of you're like too young and too naive to understand everything. But as I've gotten older, especially into my, you know, first few years into adulthood, I've realized no one understands what's going on and everyone's just pretending they understand what's going on. And that is what drives me crazy cuz it's all so fake. People are fake, you know?
It's like the jobs that you work. It's like what are you actually do? Like when when you sit down and you look at like what is the actual work you're doing, you can't help but wonder, okay, what is the impact on the world that this has?
Like why do I have to do this to to you know put food on the table? Like it's just nothing makes sense. There's a term called cf gas. I've used it on my channel before, but cap gas is basically when things are unreasonably difficult and are like become very um basically they become confusing and complex for no reason. It's like going to the DMV. It's like why do I got to jump through all these hoops to do such a basic thing? Now apply that to like all concepts of life. I feel like when you go to um what drives me the most crazy is socially. When you go to some sort of public event and you're around other people socially, everyone is like uh it's like yeah, I'm doing great. How are you, Cheryl? I'm also doing good.
You know, the kids are good, the family's good. It's like what are we talking about? What what is the conversation? What is it? What is the actual density of which in in the topics that we're covering? It's just nothingness. Everything is nothingness.
Nothing makes sense. And I know I'm being very vague, but that's intentional here. It's like what in life really has depth anymore. And the reason nothing has depth is because most people are miserable. Most people have no idea what's going on. Most people can't conceptualize things. And so the cope is to just stay at the surface level for everything. And because of that, you we we're just disconnected. I mean, you're disconnected. It's basically like be fake for the sake of fitting in or you know in any way, shape, or form try to act reasonably and then people think that you're crazy. Uh this is kind of a tired talking point to be honest. It's been talked about many times before.
It's like when Kanye West said, "I just tell the truth and telling the truth in the world full of lies is crazy." You know, or people talk about how like maybe the schizophrenic people know what's going on more than us. Maybe the mentally ill are actually the mentally sane ones. Um and and like this has been a talking point that's you know been said over and over again but the very fact that it has means there's some basis of truth to it. I think everyone has a limit. Everyone has a limit for how much they can put up with and some people it's just lower than others. My threshold is very low which is not a good thing because it doesn't really play to my favor. But, you know, I'll go into I told this story, but like I think it was like 7 months ago, I went to like this job interview uh for a corporate job, and I was still in school at the time, and I had to go and meet with these HR people, and it was like I was in a I was in a call with like three other middle-aged women, and bro, I could not handle the fakeness. So, I literally just blatantly addressed it like very directly. I'm like, "Hey, I don't mean to be rude, but if we could just um get to the point of this meeting and I'll move on. Hey, that would be that would work perfect for me." Because they're doing this whole like fake like pretending they care about you. And HR is the fakest freaking job on earth and it's just full of fake. Oh my gosh, I'm kind of spiraling here talking about a lot of different things, but I I I just understand it. I understand why people go crazy because what percentage of your day-to-day activities are in any way, shape, or form like based in logic? It it's kind of just like life is so absurd that we try to fill the void of our existence with doing anything because anything distracts us from facing or confronting the fact that life is absurd. And so we just we're just we just go insane, bro. Um and I think there a scary realization that I've had is that is that people can be pushed a lot further than they think. It's kind of like in running this like think of it in a metaphor of a guy who's running.
It's like you know you can someone in their head is like oh I can only run you know 3 miles before I start walking but then it's like when you're at 3 miles can you take one step further just one step? It's like yeah I mean I can take one step further and then it's like once you take that step well can you take one more step? And it's like yeah now apply this on and on and on. And obviously that's a metaphor, but in real life it's like it's like in a toxic relationship.
You can sort of put up with one red flag and that's okay. And then it turns to two red flags. You're like, eh, that's okay. Three red flags. All the po all of a sudden you're at the point of the what's called the sunken cost fallacy, which is where you're so deep into something that it makes no sense to to leave now cuz you'll you'll lose everything that you've built. And so that's kind of what life is. It's like you work a corporate job that you absolutely hate. and you do it for 5 years cuz you think you're going to get promoted and you're hoping you're hoping that this new promotion is going to be a position that you work less and you get paid more but then it's not and so you're like well I've already dedicated 5 years so what's two more years and then get promoted again and you get stuck in this trap and then it's like well you know the 401k I'm starting to add to that there's some benefits that I can keep if I stay here and that's just life you know it's just like you stick in things that you don't want to be in for the sake of thinking that you know the light at the end of the tunnel is right around the corner but then It never is, right? The goalpost is always moved and that's life. And that's literally why people go insane is because the goalpost keeps on moving and moving and moving and it's a perpetual state of being and it's exhausting, bro.
I think like modern life, it just constantly demands your attention, energy, uh your emotional bandwidth. It just requires you to put up with BS constantly. And then you have financial pressure. You have loneliness. You have to deal with the uncertainty that comes with life and being able to live like in in terms of uh providing for yourself and your family. There's burnout. All these things just accumulate and it's like what is going to happen to the psyche of an individual who just takes on too much burden? Because by the way, I don't know a single person that doesn't deal with a burden in their life. Even when you have no burdens, even like nepo babies that like live like these luxurious lives, the way that your brain works is like it needs a the stimuli of stress because that's how it's been for millennia. Like you've there's always been threats, there's always been things. So if you don't have that, then you start to stress out over very simple things that to other people is a walk in the park, you know? It's it's nothing. And then all of this basically leads you to feel disconnected from others because your problems are so isolated to just you. It's like very it's a very personal experience and before you know it I mean you're depressed, you're anxious and you you don't know what to do and there's constant pressure and what's scary is I'm only 22 years old and I've you know gotten a glimpse into what it looks like but I've seen people I've known people much older than me who I mean they're just barely hanging on by a thread. But once again it's like it it's that fallacy of like you can always take one more step. they can always put up with just a little bit more and they're always scared to take that leap of faith. And that's the life. That's why there there was a quote a few years back that was very viral. Um, and I said something like most men live lives of quiet desperation.
And the entire reason that quote exists and that that is a reality for a lot of men is just because you just put up with BS and it's like it's not worth it to go and restart from somewhere else. So, you just you're just kind of desperate and it just, you know, life just keeps kicking you down and then you just go insane. And I get it. And I get why people go insane. And maybe I'm insane right now. Maybe you're listening to me, rant, and it's like, I'm insane. I just haven't realized that I'm insane. But, you know, I just I don't really judge people anymore, bro. I get it. I get why you are where you are. Even if I haven't personally experienced it, I I just I get it. I don't know how else to describe it.
