How NYC Subway Substations Work

[00:00:20]The subway runs on electricity, but not just any electricity that you can plug into. You see, the grid delivers high voltage alternating current, but trains run on low voltage direct current. So these substations bridge the gap and they're deliberately scattered across the city. So when trains pass, they use their third rail to pull electricity from the nearest substation. And if one fails, the other surrounding it can absorb the load to keep trains moving.

[00:00:39]But the 2024 incident proved the safety net had problems. Some of these substations have been running since the 1930s, and the machines inside haven't been meaningfully updated since. So now 36% of all equipment is in poor or failing condition. And when the 90-year-old equipment finally gave out, it didn't just fail quietly. It had a blast from the paths with so much force that it literally blew the doors off their hinges. But the closest backup substations were too old themselves to absorb the load. So riders on two F trains lost power and ventilation and delay snarled thousands more commuters well into the next morning. But this vulnerability forced the MTA to act. So by 2029, 75 substations are being upgraded and it will be the biggest investment in subway power in MTA history at $4 billion.
