Indian immigrant families in Canada often maintain large multi-generational household structures where extended family members including cousins, uncles, aunts, and grandparents commonly live in close proximity, sometimes numbering 40-60 people in one area, which creates both challenges like reduced privacy and increased responsibilities, but also provides deep emotional connections and a strong sense of belonging that many immigrants come to appreciate as they adapt to life in Canada.

🎙️ Indian Immigrant Family Culture in Canada: What Does a “Big Family” Really Mean?Added:
How would you start with introducing the Indian culture? We It's a very social culture. Um, traditionally you have very large multi-generational, even like branched families where it's like you'll be living in the same area, if not the same building, as like your cousins and uncles and aunts and nieces and nephews and grandparents or great uncles and great aunts or whatever. You can commonly have like 40, 50, 60 people living in like one close area.
>> Right.
>> And so you might feel like it's it could be difficult because uh, you don't have your privacy or you don't have space to yourself or there's always someone there or you always have family responsibilities. Mhm. But having lived similarly here in Canada and having sort of grown out of it, it's a really good feeling to know that you are on really good terms with all of your family. Um, I was I was actually having a conversation with one of my friends the other day and uh, we were talking about just our extended family, right?
>> And she's like, "Oh, I have such a big family. I have like maybe 15 or 16 people. That includes my aunts, my uncles, my cousins." I'm like, "Only 15 or 16?"
>> [laughter] >> And so we sat down and we started counting out all of my relatives and she lost count after about 90. 90? 90. 90, so 9 0?
>> Yes.
