[00:00:00]If gray is just a hair color, why is it so hard for some people to stop dyeing their hair?

[00:00:05]Because if you've ever thought about going gray, but you continue to color your hair, something is stopping you.

[00:00:11]What is that? See, there's no right or wrong answer here. The reasons that women eventually decide to give up hair dye are so different. And the reasons that women continue to dye their hair are also different. But before we talk about all the reasons why you might give it up, I think it's important to understand why you might not. Going gray is not easy. We live in a youth-obsessed society, and like it or not, gray hair has a stigma. The Golden Girls, you're getting older, it's associated with aging. And I think a lot of heavy advertising made it so that most women have bought into the idea that gray hair means you're getting old. Also, the actual process of growing out hair dye can seem overwhelming, can take a long time, and dealing with two-toned hair for years in some cases. You have to really want it to deal with that. And it's not just about what you think other people or society in general are going to think of you, it's what you think of yourself. Believe it or not, a lot of who we are is tied up in our hair color, our identity as being the blonde, the brunette, the redhead, the person who would never go gray. It's almost as if you would be creating an entirely different identity. I know in the women that I've spoken to, a lot of them are worried that they're not going to seem attractive or vibrant anymore if they go gray. And maybe that's you. Maybe you think that way. You can see here that the the theme here is that this is a very individual decision and an individual journey. But there are all these reasons to not go gray. There are so many reasons why women decide to finally just give it up and embrace it and start their grow-out journey. The main one I hear the most, and this was true for me is, you just get tired of that cycle of dying your hair. The older you get, maybe the more gray hair that you're going to have to cover up and it almost seems as if you're just constantly retouching your roots. You're planning your life around hair dye, you're planning your hair dye around your life and it never really feels like you can just sit and relax and enjoy your hair color.

[00:02:20]>> up in this endless cycle of hating our hair and then loving our hair and then hating our hair again. You get to this place where you just want it to stop.

[00:02:28]>> talk for a minute about how expensive a professional hair color is nowadays?

[00:02:32]>> But I think what's making it so much easier for more and more women to ditch the dye and embrace their natural gray hair is the fact that it's just becoming more prevalent on social media, even amongst celebrities. More and more women are starting to see gray as a beautiful hair color in its own right. It doesn't necessarily mean the Golden Girls anymore. When it's taken care of, gray hair can be amazing.

[00:02:57]>> tell you right now from personal experience, I've gotten more compliments on my gray hair than I ever did when I was dying my hair because people recognize what a badass you are. One of the coolest things about this process is paradoxically how much confidence it gives you because you've made a tough decision and you've stuck with it and you're going against what people expect.

[00:03:19]That takes some serious grit, man.

[00:03:22]Somewhere along your grow-out journey, you really stop caring what other people think of you and once you experience that freedom, the freedom of your time, not having to sit in that chair every couple of week, the freedom of having more cash in your pocket, plus getting a gorgeous hair color on top of that, that's amazing. Listen, there is nothing wrong with hair dye. I dyed my hair for decades and sometimes I actually miss what a fresh hair color looks and feels like. So, if dying your hair brings you joy and makes you feel good about yourself, by all means, keep dying it.
