But it's it's from that time period, the Han period where the swords the Japanese were influenced by the Chinese. has started to take their own spin on it. You still see a lot of the Chinese influence in the design of the furniture with a differentially hardened Oh my gosh. Now >> yeah.

[00:08:31]You see the the guard here. This whole mechanism is something that's directly Chinese. You see this nice curved differenti hardened blade with a bow.

Um, it's basically what 1566. It's basically a 1566 type of steel >> with a little more durable edge. But we love 65 mm. In fact, we've uh we've used these for demos where we've just tried to break them and we weren't able to.

[00:16:18]>> It has a sort of a wicked story and wicked curvature, but not too much where it makes nukichi and noto nukit noto difficult. Um and uh we all own one. We love it.

And you can see it has an early terminating bohe and it's made from differentially hardened 1095 carbon steel. But let's hear this thing. This is why we love these these things. [00:47:47]So, that's the Gemini from Phoenix Armory, a double-edged sword. We got more in today. So, they're available on our website. Uh and uh we got some more in today that I'll get get up on the website next day or two that are made from 65N. They'll be a little less um than the T10 versions and they feel lighter. So um but we we really love 65 mmN which is a tool steel. It's a spring steel basically equivalent to 1566 with maganese which which uh helps to aid in resisting cracking and chipping.

[00:48:18]A lot of the Chinese swords are made out of 65 mm and then they started making swords European swords and Japanese swords and lo and behold it's pretty amazing. All right, time. So, we're going to cut now with um well, a series of swords uh called the Vortex. So, the Vortex is is a a series that we designed which for people on a budget that actually want to get into cutting and they don't know where to start and they don't want to spend, you know, everything's expensive.

[00:48:52]Taco Bell's 20 bucks. So, uh, this we we have these in different colors with different sword guards. Um, they're called the Vortex series. We have had them available in katana and wakazashi formats. This is one that belongs to Ryan. I think all of us own a vortex.

[00:49:07]They're just so much fun. They're all made from 9260 spring steel, which is the upper echelon is spring steel. Until you get to the exotic stuff, it'll bend up to 90 degrees and not set the bend.

[00:49:16]This version, it has no heat. It does have no bohe. I believe all the models we have in stock are bohe. Most people have asked for bohe. Uh if you're a sword arch practitioner and you just want a wakazashi in your waist uh that you're not going to draw but you want in your waist for practicing your nukichi and noto or nukitske, these are great.

So, you know, when you cut, you're going to have some bad angles. And with T10 or carbon steel, you run the risk of bending, chipping, or breaking them. In this economy, not everybody can afford to replace their blade every time they have a bad cut. So, spring steels are a great way for you to kind of learn cutting, develop some good skills, develop some confidence. Nobody owns one sword, right? But maybe your first sword, you'll remember it's the one that you developed your skills on. And that's why we love these vortexes. And that's why we love spring steel. It really is good for somebody, you know, backyard cutters or even if you're practicing in a ku or a gendo like Io or Toyamaru, you actually want something you can cut with, but you gota, you know, you can't put a $600 credit on your card without your wife slapping you around or significant other.

So your huji has to be locked in. It changes with your grip. Your tennowi is going to change that. Um but a more shallow shallow tachi. Yeah curved blade is going to be a better slicing weapon.

And if you're if you're cutting with one hand on a horse, maybe maybe that deeper koshori has its place and that's going to be a better cutting weapon in that particular situation.

[01:10:31]It's just fun. It's hard, though. You know, it's uh and and to those of you guys who train Japanese swords, I've been training Japanese sword art since 83 in Japan since ' 87. And there's a lot of dojo that don't cut anymore. They just don't cut. It's expensive now. A lot of kou um you know, there's not enough Japanese interested. A lot of Westerners are keeping the dojo open.

[01:10:48]They're no longer They don't have their own dojo now. So they're renting a space at a community center and they don't teach yachty naginata or other long pole arms because there's no permanent storage and students can't carry that on a bus or a train without being cumbersome. So they've gone back to just teaching tachi. Even the soou schools that have multiple different styles, multiple different weaponry taught in the schools have settled down on something like a bow, a hanbo joe or um a katana uh because just it's easier it's easier to carry them around and procure them. So it's interesting what's happening in Japan right now. A lot of cotu are not even teaching and the current so are not even teaching some of the makimono and deno from their own ruha because nobody >> there's nobody gonna gonna cut gonna train it.

[01:11:34]>> It's too difficult. The barrier to entry is too difficult. Oh, that was a nice cut.

[01:11:41]But yeah, so I've had a lot of teachers in Japan that they'll they'll they'll kick your ass by looking at you. They're just not good at cutting a fixed target, which remember tameshi is is the test of the performance of the sword. If you're testing the performance of the wielder of the sword, that's called suogi >> your do have a location. Yeah, I mean postco especially in United States co really gutted it all and uh you know rents are expensive.

[01:12:24]This is silly. And so it's very difficult to teach um or have an actual dojo. There's nowhere now in the United States can a martial arts school get insurance for cutting with a live blade.

[01:12:36]Even the grandfathered in uh contracts, they they they've nullified them. So you can't even there's no place that will no place able to find. We're we've been trying this for now five years. We've called everybody and we've had a lot of friends that have run dojo Toyama uh type schools where cutting is a very big part of their curriculum and they're having difficulty finding any type of insurance. So that that compounds it too. There's a liability there's a risk whenever you have a live blade of course least common denominator type of thing.

[01:13:04]So there's a lot of forces working against it. So it's just difficult. So a lot of schools they just do seat gata you know iido or gendo or just focus on kumitachi or move to like sparring or like like a hea style blunted steel sparring which I think looks fun as hell. Watch out.
