[00:00:57]Fred and George are very proud of their new sweets.

[00:01:03]For two days, students keep turning into large yellow birds.

[00:01:09]Feathers explode everywhere.

[00:01:13]After that, everyone becomes careful.

[00:01:17]No one trusts food from anyone else.

[00:01:21]Harry promises himself he will never eat anything from the twins again.

[00:01:29]The Christmas Ball is only a few days away.

[00:01:34]Everywhere he goes, Harry hears the same question.

[00:01:39]“Who are you going with?”

[00:01:41]Ron keeps asking Hermione.

[00:01:44]He asks when she is reading.

[00:01:47]He asks when she is eating.

[00:01:50]He asks when she is not expecting it.

[00:01:53]“Hermione, who are you going with?”

[00:01:58]“I’m not telling you.”

[00:02:01]“Why not?”

[00:02:03]“Because you’ll laugh.”

[00:02:06]Ron looks confused and annoyed at the same time.

[00:02:13]Christmas morning arrives.

[00:02:16]Harry wakes suddenly.

[00:02:19]Something is very close to his face.

[00:02:23]Large green eyes look at him in the dark.

[00:02:27]“Dobby!” Harry shouts.

[00:02:30]He almost falls out of bed.

[00:02:33]“Dobby is sorry, sir!” Dobby squeaks.

[00:02:38]“Dobby only wishes Harry Potter Merry Christmas!”

[00:02:44]Ron turns over in his bed.

[00:02:47]“Is someone attacking you?” he asks sleepily.

[00:02:53]“No. It’s just Dobby.”

[00:02:58]Dobby stands nervously next to Harry’s bed.

[00:03:02]He wears strange clothes.

[00:03:06]There is a bright Christmas ball on his hat.

[00:03:10]“Dobby has a present, sir.”

[00:03:13]Harry remembers he does not have a gift for Dobby.

[00:03:18]He quickly opens his trunk and pulls out an old pair of thick yellow socks.

[00:03:26]“Sorry I didn’t wrap them,” Harry says.

[00:03:32]Dobby gasps with happiness.

[00:03:35]“Socks are Dobby’s favorite clothes!”

[00:03:41]Ron laughs and throws Dobby another pair of new socks.

[00:03:47]“And take these too.”

[00:03:49]Dobby almost cries with joy.

[00:03:55]Harry opens his other presents.

[00:03:58]Hermione gives him a book about Quidditch teams.

[00:04:03]Ron gives him a bag of Dungbombs.

[00:04:09]Sirius sends a small knife with many useful tools.

[00:04:14]Hagrid gives him a large box of sweets.

[00:04:19]Harry feels warm and happy.

[00:04:22]But later that day, he remembers something.

[00:04:27]Tonight is the Christmas Ball.

[00:04:30]His stomach feels tight.

[00:04:35]In the evening, the boys change into their dress robes.

[00:04:41]Harry feels uncomfortable but normal.

[00:04:45]Ron looks like he wants to disappear.

[00:04:51]His robes are old.

[00:04:53]There is ugly lace at the neck and sleeves.

[00:04:57]“They look like a dress,” Ron says in horror.

[00:05:05]He uses a spell to cut off the lace.

[00:05:09]The edges look messy.

[00:05:11]“It’s still terrible,” he mutters.

[00:05:17]Downstairs, the common room looks strange.

[00:05:22]Students wear bright colors instead of black robes.

[00:05:27]Everyone looks different.

[00:05:30]Parvati Patil waits at the bottom of the stairs.

[00:05:34]She wears bright pink robes with gold bracelets.

[00:05:39]Her hair shines in the firelight.

[00:05:42]“You look nice,” Harry says awkwardly.

[00:05:46]“Thanks,” she replies, smiling.

[00:05:51]Ron looks around again.

[00:05:54]“Where’s Hermione?”

[00:05:56]No one answers.

[00:05:59]They go down to the Entrance Hall.

[00:06:01]It is full of students waiting for the doors to open.

[00:06:06]Slytherins stand together.

[00:06:09]Malfoy wears black velvet robes.

[00:06:13]He looks proud.

[00:06:16]Pansy Parkinson holds his arm.

[00:06:19]The oak doors open.

[00:06:27]The Great Hall looks magical.

[00:06:33]The long house tables are gone.

[00:06:36]Small round tables fill the room.

[00:06:40]Silver frost covers the walls.

[00:06:44]The ceiling shines like a night sky.

[00:06:48]Hundreds of lights glow softly.

[00:06:51]Harry forgets to breathe.

[00:07:17]Then he sees her.

[00:07:19]Hermione stands near Viktor Krum.

[00:07:24]Harry almost does not recognize her.

[00:07:27]Her hair is smooth and tied back.

[00:07:31]There is an elegant knot on the top of her head.

[00:07:37]She wears light blue robes that move softly when she walks.

[00:07:43]She stands straight.

[00:07:46]She looks confident.

[00:07:48]She looks beautiful.

[00:07:50]“Hi, Harry,” she says, smiling nervously.

[00:07:55]Ron stares.

[00:07:58]He looks as if someone has hit him.

[00:08:03]Professor McGonagall calls the champions forward.

[00:08:08]Harry walks with Parvati.

[00:08:10]Students clap as they enter the Hall.

[00:08:14]Harry feels embarrassed.

[00:08:17]He tries not to trip.

[00:08:20]They sit at the special table near the teachers.

[00:08:24]Music begins.

[00:08:28]“Come on,” Parvati whispers.

[00:08:31]“We have to dance.”

[00:08:33]Harry stands and walks onto the dance floor.

[00:08:37]He feels stiff, like wood.

[00:08:41]He places one hand on Parvati’s waist.

[00:08:46]He tries to remember how to move.

[00:08:49]It is not terrible.

[00:08:51]And he does not step on her toes.

[00:08:55]But he does not enjoy it.

[00:09:00]After one slow song, he leads her back to the table.

[00:09:05]Ron sits there, watching Hermione and Krum dance.

[00:09:11]His eyes follow them across the floor.

[00:09:15]Hermione laughs at something Krum says.

[00:09:19]Krum leans down to hear her better.

[00:09:23]Ron holds his chair tightly.

[00:09:27]Hermione returns to the table after a while.

[00:09:33]“It’s hot in here,” she says.

[00:09:36]“Having fun?” Ron asks in a hard voice.

[00:09:42]“Yes,” Hermione says calmly.

[00:09:45]“Viktor is very nice.”

[00:09:47]“Viktor,” Ron repeats.

[00:09:51]“What is wrong with you?” she asks.

[00:09:55]“He’s from Durmstrang,” Ron says.

[00:09:59]“He’s competing against Harry.”

[00:10:02]“So?” Hermione replies sharply.

[00:10:08]“He’s the enemy.”

[00:10:11]Hermione stares at him.

[00:10:14]“Don’t be stupid.”

[00:10:17]“It’s about winning!”

[00:10:19]Ron says loudly.

[00:10:21]People nearby begin to watch them.

[00:10:25]“It’s about meeting people,” Hermione answers.

[00:10:31]“You were excited when he arrived.”

[00:10:34]Ron ignores that.

[00:10:37]“I suppose he’s using you.

[00:10:40]Trying to get information about Harry.”

[00:10:46]Hermione looks hurt.

[00:10:49]“He hasn’t asked me anything about Harry. Not once.”

[00:10:55]Ron shakes his head.

[00:10:57]“I would never help him cheat,” Hermione says.

[00:11:02]“I want Harry to win.”

[00:11:05]“You’ve got a funny way of showing it,” Ron replies.

[00:11:11]Hermione stands up.

[00:11:15]Ron opens his mouth but says nothing.

[00:11:19]Hermione walks away across the dance floor.

[00:11:23]Padma looks at Ron.

[00:11:25]“Are you going to dance?” she asks.

[00:11:29]“No.”

[00:11:31]She leaves too.

[00:11:33]Harry feels uncomfortable.

[00:11:36]He does not want to choose sides.

[00:11:42]Later, Harry and Ron go outside into the cold night air.

[00:11:48]Snow is white under the fairy lights.

[00:11:52]The garden is quiet.

[00:11:54]A fountain makes a soft sound.

[00:11:58]They hear voices nearby.

[00:12:01]Voices they do not like.

[00:12:05]It is Snape and Karkaroff.

[00:12:10]“I don’t see what the problem is, Igor.”

[00:12:16]It is Snape’s voice.

[00:12:19]“I am very concerned,” Karkaroff says.

[00:12:23]“You cannot pretend it is not happening.

[00:12:28]It is getting worse.”

[00:12:31]“Then leave, if it worries you so much,” Snape says.

[00:12:38]“I will stay at Hogwarts.”

[00:12:44]Snape and Karkaroff walk toward Harry and Ron.

[00:12:49]They see them in the dark.

[00:12:51]Karkaroff looks a little nervous.

[00:12:55]“What are you two doing out here?”

[00:12:59]Snape asks suspiciously.

[00:13:04]“It’s not illegal to take a walk,” Ron answers.

[00:13:09]“Then keep walking,” Snape says in a low, scary voice.

[00:13:17]Snape hits rosebushes with his wand.

[00:13:21]Couples jump out from behind them.

[00:13:24]They were hiding there, doing things couples do.

[00:13:32]“What is wrong with Karkaroff?” Ron whispers.

[00:13:37]“When did he and Snape use first names?” Harry asks.

[00:13:43]They walk further.

[00:13:45]They see Hagrid and Madame Maxime on a bench.

[00:13:50]They are talking quietly.

[00:13:52]Harry and Ron hide behind a big stone reindeer.

[00:14:00]“It was my mother,” Hagrid says.

[00:14:04]“She was a giant.

[00:14:06]She left when I was three.

[00:14:10]My father raised me.

[00:14:13]He died after I started school.”

[00:14:17]Madame Maxime says nothing.

[00:14:20]“What about you?” Hagrid asks.

[00:14:24]“Which side are you a giant on?”

[00:14:30]Madame Maxime stands up suddenly.

[00:14:34]“How dare you!

[00:14:37]I have never been so insulted!

[00:14:42]Half-giant? Me?

[00:14:46]I - I have big bones!”

[00:14:51]She walks away angrily.

[00:14:54]Hagrid sits alone.

[00:14:56]Harry feels sad for him.

[00:14:59]After a minute, he walks toward his cabin.

[00:15:05]Ron looks at Harry.

[00:15:07]“Did you know?

[00:15:09]About Hagrid?”

[00:15:11]“No,” Harry says.

[00:15:14]“So what?”

[00:15:16]Ron explains.

[00:15:18]“Giants are mean.

[00:15:21]It is in their nature.

[00:15:23]Like trolls.

[00:15:26]They like killing.”

[00:15:28]Harry thinks of Hagrid.

[00:15:31]Kind.

[00:15:32]Loyal.

[00:15:33]Brave.

[00:15:34]“I don't care,” Harry says.

[00:15:37]“There is nothing wrong with Hagrid.”

[00:15:42]They go back inside.

[00:15:45]The ball ends at midnight.

[00:15:48]Everyone goes to the entrance hall.

[00:15:52]Hermione says good night to Krum.

[00:15:55]She gives Ron a cold look and walks past him up the stairs.

[00:16:02]Ron walks up the stairs slowly.

[00:16:06]On the stairs, Cedric stops Harry.

[00:16:09]“I owe you for the dragons.

[00:16:13]Your golden egg, does it wail when you open it?”

[00:16:18]“Yes.”

[00:16:21]“Take a bath.

[00:16:23]Take the egg with you.

[00:16:25]Think about things in the hot water.

[00:16:29]It will help.

[00:16:31]Use the prefects’ bathroom.

[00:16:33]The password is ‘pine fresh.’”

[00:16:37]Cedric runs back down to Cho.

[00:16:40]Harry stands there on the stairs for a moment, very confused.

[00:16:49]Harry goes to the common room alone.

[00:16:53]Ron and Hermione are shouting at each other.

[00:16:57]“Well, if you don't like it, you know what to do!” Hermione shouts.

[00:17:05]“Yeah?

[00:17:06]What?”

[00:17:07]“The next time there is a ball, ask me first!

[00:17:12]Not as a last choice!”

[00:17:15]Ron's mouth opens and closes.

[00:17:19]He looks like a fish out of water.

[00:17:23]Hermione runs up the stairs to the girls' rooms.

[00:17:29]Ron looks at Harry.

[00:17:31]“Well... that just proves... she completely missed the point...” Harry says nothing.

[00:17:41]He is happy to be friends with Ron again.

[00:17:45]But he thinks Hermione understood the point better than Ron did.
