This video documents a traditional African funeral service for Joyce Cooper, demonstrating key cultural practices including ancestor worship, the concept of Zato (the four elements of creation: fire, water, earth, and air), and the belief that death is a transformation rather than an end. The ceremony integrates Christian elements with African traditional beliefs, featuring communal singing, ancestor invocation, and rituals that honor the deceased while providing comfort to the grieving family. The service emphasizes that nothing truly dies, as the deceased's spirit continues to exist in the universe, and that the community has a responsibility to support the family through their grief.

Oh my God, Lord of lords, Amenra, Lord of Het, give me your hand and save me. Shine upon me and sustain me. You are the only God and there is none like you. You are ra who rise in the heavens.
>> The God who created men and women.
>> When he rises, men and women live and their hearts are lifted up when they see the one who gives the breath of life to those who are in the egg, who make people and birds to live, who supplies even food for the mice in their holes, as well as for worms and fleas.
May he grant us an honorable burial after an old age so that we may be safe in his hands.
[music and singing] Good morning everyone.
>> Um very warm welcome to Walworth Methodist Church. Um very pleased to have you here with us today. Um because we're a little bit late starting the service. The funeral director has just asked us to keep an eye on timings because we have to be at the cemetery by 1:00, which means we have to leave here by 12. You will have more time at the cemetery to share memories and um offer tributes. But I'm just going to ask if those of you who are down to speak could just be mindful of the time and try to um be brief and you will have more opportunity and more time at the cemetery. It's just that the cemetery closes and they um there are penalties and all sorts of things if we're late.
So, sorry to have to say that, but please just be mindful of the time.
We gather today to remember and give thanks for the life of our sister Joyce.
And we come today with hearts of sorrow and hearts of gratitude. Sorrow for her loss and gratitude for her long and fruitful life.
We affirm the words of Jesus for Joyce who was a lifelong Christian. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life and whoever lives in whoever believes in me will live even though they die." So we turn today to God our creator, our comfort, our strength, and our eternal hope. Let us pray.
Creator God, you are our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.
We give you thanks for Joyce.
We praise you for her life, for the love that she shared, the wisdom she gave, and the faith she lived.
We thank you that she rests now in your eternal care.
As we gather in this service, comfort us with your presence and remind us of the hope you give. In Jesus' name, amen.
Royal elders, kings and queens, princes and princesses of great mother Africa, I bring greetings in the most precious, powerful and bountiful name of our motherland, our kealan. >> Yeah.
>> When we drink the water, we are eating and drinking ourselves over. and over again. Did you hear brothers and sisters?
>> Do not be afraid of death.
>> Because what you call death is a change and you are still in the universe.
That's >> right.
>> Do not be afraid of death. Papa Garvey, such as the wisdom of the most eminent prophet and king, his excellency, Marcus Messiah Garvey. Say, "Hail to the power of the word."

We remind ourselves in the wisdom of our ancestors taught to us through those words of Papa Gabby.
>> Yes.
>> That we speak not of our mother [music] as dead but as a living soul.
>> Yes.
>> And so as we stand here, we give thanks for her loins of her father.
for her fertile womb that brought into this world >> one then two then three then four then five almost 93 I believe it's almost 90 almost 92 tears flow from those who love her most let those tears be like libation >> they will beloved Brothers and sisters, [music] we learn from our ancestors [music] of the concept of Zato. The elements, [music] the rudiments of creation, fire, water, earth, and air. All that is in creation [music] consists of these elements. That's right.
>> Including our human existence.
>> That's right.
And so we are made of fire. We are made of water. [music] We are made of earth.
And we are made of air.
>> That's right.
>> We are going to perform a ritual that reinforces that concept. [music] [music] Motorto [music] [music] vom. Oh, [music] evil.
evil. He [music] Oh, you may [singing] [music] >> moto fire.
>> Yep.
>> No fire.
>> Yeah.
>> For it is the energy of your being.
>> Yeah. Without fire, you are nothing.
>> That's right.
>> No fire, for you are fire.
>> Yes. [music] >> Water.
>> Water.
>> No water for it is the blood that runs through your veins.
>> Without water, you are nothing.
>> No water, for you are water.
>> Yeah. [music] >> Evil.
>> Evil earth.
>> Yes.
No earth for it is the flesh of your being.
>> Yeah.
>> With from earth we came [music] to earth we must return.
>> No earth for you are earth.
>> Meo >> air >> air.
>> No ear >> for it is the breath of life.
>> Without ear you are nothing.
No ear >> for you are ear.
>> Yeah, >> Mama Joyce.
>> Her fire [music] is the energy of the sun.
>> That's right.
>> She's reunited more strongly with the energy of the sun.
[music] >> Water, [music] the blood, the fluid of her body becomes the fluid of the earth.
>> [music] >> Like the ocean, she is now one with the waters of the earth. [music] Are you all with me, brothers and sisters?
>> Evil earth. [music] She returns to the earth. Her body becomes the earth. [music] An ear, the breath of life. Vo the breath of life.
All of her [music] rudiments are still in the universe. Are you all with me, brothers and sisters? [music] >> And so, mama continues to bless us with her presence in the universe. That's why Papa Gabby says, "Nothing dies." [music] >> So now, beloved brothers and sisters, we are going to roll up our sleeves [music] and put on boots, gashes, >> and we back brace. We're back brief demand them. We demand them there.
[music] We're going to dig the earth and we're going to lay a mama to rest with loving hands.
>> That's right.
>> But that's what we do traditionally.
>> Am I right, brothers and sisters?
>> So, let us do that now, beloved brothers and sisters. We're going to >> we're going to be chanting.
>> Yeah.
>> Yes. Beloved brothers and sisters, as we said, from earth we came to earth we must return. So beloved brothers and sisters as you pass around.
[music] So I say again from earth we came to earth we must return [music] dear brother and sisters first of it [music] [music] they >> [music] >> Hallelujah.

[music] Are you making me home?
[music] >> [music] >> Donkey, baby. [music] [music] >> [music] [music] >> Are you making me [music] [music] [music] >> [music] >> I go home. [music] [music] Sorry.
>> [music] >> Then I worry [music] >> beloved brothers and sisters, we're going to keep the spirit alive.
Keep the spirit going. Brothers in particular, that doesn't mean if a sister feel like she want to come digging, you are privileged to do so.
It's your privilege, but it's the duty of the men. So brothers don't let >> women equal you know >> women are equal >> equality equality and the balance >> you know what I'm saying um beloved brothers don't let one brother have to exhaust himself especially family members we know that they'll be driven by passion but we need to relieve them so brothers roll up your sleeves your pants take off your shoes if you have to know we serious cover.

>> I [music] love the I [music] might of the rain.
The black and the green. [music] With the might of the black [music] to make the [music] Africa be free to be the [music] [singing] mind of the >> [music] >> with the might of the [music] [music] >> [music] >> God lives.
>> God lives.
>> God believes >> live.
[music] Beloved brothers and sisters, we're winding down. Winding down. They say all great things must come to an end.
>> But this is not the the end for us is a phase that marks the transition from one to another.
>> Is that right, brothers and sisters? So we pause to regenerate.
We pause to regenerate.
Just like our mama came. Mama came and she gave >> and now she has to move on >> to another field.
>> But she has left a legacy, >> a legacy of light, a legacy of life.
We've heard from her children today how much of an inspiration she was to them.
And if she was an inspiration to them, she was and is an inspiration to us.
>> Yes, sir.
>> Because we have been inspired by what she has produced. Is that right, brother? Yes.
>> So we give thanks and praises to Mama Joyce Cooper >> because she has she has blessed us. She has benefited us with the richness and the power of her spirit. We're going to gather around mama's resting place. Can we form a circle as we close out? Let's see if we can make some space. Get in between. Maybe maybe there's some space there. Can we just fill that gap and make a circle?
We try and do it that way.
Please, brothers and sisters, come closer. We're closing out. We're going to sing Three Little Birds to lift this the the the family to lift the spirit of the family up. We're going to say to them, don't worry about a thing because every little thing is going to be all right. We rise up this morning. Smile with the rising sun.
>> Three little birds >> beside my doorstep singing sweet songs >> of melody melodies, pure and truth. This is my message to you and that is to remind us that nature is still doing its work.
>> Nature which is the manifest character of the creator is doing its work. That's right. And even as mama lies here before us, nature is doing its work. The creator is doing its work. We continue to be inspired [music] by her life and by her liberty. Is that right, brothers and sisters?
>> So let's raise this song. This is especially for the family now. So we all have to sing. All those of us who think we can't sing, sing anyway. Sing anyway.
All right.
Because the worst singing of a year among African people is n the worst singing because everybody sing out >> and the one we can't sing and the one sing aloud >> and at that make it sweet >> at that make it sweet something to laugh about >> and the whole purpose is to cheer up >> to cheer up everybody yes brothers and sisters so let's raise our voices tend And I'm worried >> about every [music] little [music] rise up this Morning.
Smiling the rising sun. Three little birds [music] beside my doorstep.
Singing sweet songs. [music] Our melodies pure and true. Singing this is my [music] message to you.
Brother, don't worry about a thing about nothing [music] >> cuz every little thing is going to be all right now.
[music] Don't worry about a thing.
Every little thing is going to be all right. [music] We rise up this morning.
Smile in the rising sun. Three little birds [music] beside my nose.
They were singing sweet songs [music] of meloies pure and true. Singing this [music] is my message to you.
Brother David, don't worry about the thing. Don't worry about nothing because every little thing [music] is going to be all right.
Brother Levi, don't worry about the thing.
Worry about the thing. [music] Every little thing, it's going to be all right.
We rise up this morning. [music] In the rising sun, three little birds [music] beside my daughter, they were singing sweet [music] songs.
Our melodies pure and true. saying this is my message to you. [music] >> Sister Jenny, don't worry about a thing [music] because every little thing is going to be all right.
I said you don't worry about [music] a thing about every little thing is going to be all right. What we do this morning [music] with the rising sun we starting the birds [music] beside they were singing [music] sweet songs of melodies pure and true singing this is my message to you [music] brother don't worry >> [music] >> All right. All right. [music] Because every little thing is going to be [music] all right.
Smile with the rising sun. [music] Three little birds.
Singing sweet songs [music] and true singing. This is my [music] message to you.
And I don't worry about [music] the thing cuz every little thing is going to be all right.
>> Don't worry, [music] right?
Because every little thing is going to be [music] all right.
Brotherum, don't worry about a thing [music] because every little thing is going to be all right.
Family, don't worry about [music] every little thing.
>> One more time. Rise up this morning [music] with the rising sun. Every little bird [music] singing sweet pure and true. [music] [music] >> We'll finish the song at the reception.
Yeah.
>> All right.
>> And brother Craig who will lead Beloved brothers and sisters, as we conclude this sequence of rituals, the ceremony, the celebration of life continues. And what a life. A life not only can we all be proud of, but always remember in our African tradition, we are required at times like these to look at the life of the person was past and learn, extrapolate lessons, look at the good that they have done and use that good to enrich and enhance the quality of our own lives. look at the errors that they have made >> so that we can be informed, we can be wiser about how we move and the lessons we learn from the errors we make in our lives.
>> Are you with me brothers and sisters?
>> Importantly, we remember the family who are closest to the one who has passed on because they are the ones who are feeling the greatest pain.
We can't stop that pain.
>> But what we can do is put our arms around them >> and make the pain easier to bear.
>> We can't fill the gap where they feel that deep sense of loss. We can't be we can't be Mama Joyce. But what we can do is fill that gap with our presence, with our love, with our care. Is that right, brothers and sisters? real.
>> We can't be the the hand of Mama Joyce who [music] touched her children in that gentle way >> who gave to her children who sacrificed personally so our children could have.
But what we can be is the hand of kindness. We can be there and we can see when they need that hand of kindness and be that hand of kindness. Are you all with me, brothers and sisters? Yes, >> there's things that we can do >> positively >> to make it easier for the family to bear.
>> And finally, finally, often times we take our foot off the gas after we leave >> our loved one to rest.
>> Yes, I'm going to go a big long sleeve.
>> No, you deserve that. What we mustn't do, >> we the community, >> we the wider family, what we mustn't do is forget that they need us. Forget that this is a challenging time for them.
>> So a phone call can make all the difference.
>> A card, a timely >> put in peace. A pot of rice and peas can make all the are you that >> can make all the difference. You know, a kind word here and there can make all the difference. Right. So, we're going to close.
We're going to close as one, beloved brothers and sisters. And we're going to close with the the prayer of the word and then I'm going to ask sister Kai to utter the closing words. She's on the phone.
Okay.
[music] Uh can we all assume what day is it today?
We assume the sign of two French >> [music] >> Can I marry [music] the word?
[music] May the words of our mouths and meditation of our hearts be acceptable in thy sight of our creation.
Can I marry?
>> Can I marry?
>> Can I marry? [music] >> Can I marry?
>> Can I marryinda power to our people?
[music] >> Put our left hands in our heart and raise our [music] right hand. Brothers and sisters, let us remind ourselves to take from here all that we have learned, [music] all that we've gained in knowledge, inspiration, and information out into the streets, into our homes, into our places of work, of place of [music] study. Wherever we are, let us remind ourselves to be a shining light onto Africans everywhere. Let Africans everywhere know that the African God reigns supreme. That Africans everywhere know it is a joy to [music] be an African. Let Africans everywhere know that liberation is indeed at hand. And I'm worried. [music] >> And I'm worried.
>> And I'm worried.
>> I'm [music] wishing good.
>> Good night. Good [music] night.
Let me wish you good night. Good night.
Good night. [music] Good night. Mama, we wish you good night. Good night. Good night. Good night. Good night. [music] Mama, we wish you good night. Good night. Good night. Good night. Mama, we wish you good night. Good night. Good night. Good night. Mama, we wish [music] you good night. Good night. Good night.
Good night. Mama, we wish you good night. [music] Good night. Good night.
Good night.
[music] God [music] [music] [music] wish you [music] night.
[music] Baby [music] [music] night.
[music] >> [music] >> might [music] in the morning. [music] [music] Oh, night [music] [music] good night. Good night. Good night. Good night.
[music] We wish you a good night. Good night. Good night.
We wish you good night. [music] Good night. Good night.
We wish you good night. Good night. Good night. Walk away while we sing.
>> [music] >> We wish you good night.
Keep singing.
We wish you good night. Good night.
[music] Mama, we wish you good night. Good night. Good night. Mama, we [music] wish you good night. Good night.
In the morning. Good night. Good [music] night.
>> [music] [music] >> Let me get your keys again.
[music] [music] >> [music] [music] >> Yesterday.
[music] >> [music] [music] >> When you come to get >> [music] [music] [music] >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, no. She has to make money. You're the
