Atherosclerosis begins when cumulative LDL cholesterol exposure reaches 5,000 mg-years, calculated as LDL level (mg/dL) multiplied by years of exposure; for example, 125 mg/dL of LDL over 40 years equals 5,000 mg-years, marking the onset of atherosclerosis.

5000 mg-years of elevated LDL cholesterol #cholesterol #greenscreenAdded:
So, what is this concept of cholesterol years? When you hit the 5,000 mg years mark, that's when you start having atherosclerosis. It comes from this article here by Brian Ference in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. This is the graphic from that chart. It is mg years. Once you cross the 5,000 threshold, that's when you start having atherosclerosis. So, a person with 125 mg per deciliter of LDL cholesterol for 40 years crosses you into the 5,000 mg year mark. That's when you start having atherosclerosis. And we don't want you to cross that 5,000 mark because that's when you have atherosclerosis. Try to stay under that.
Either get your LDL down or get younger.
Can't really get younger, though.
