Successful online clothing reselling requires calculating profit by subtracting platform fees, shipping costs, and cost of goods from the selling price, while implementing strategic pricing such as clearance discounts (40-70% off) for items that don't sell quickly and accepting offers below standard discount rates to move inventory efficiently.

Ship with me! What sold over the weekend for a part time clothing reseller? Higher ASP!Hinzugefügt:
Hey friend, welcome. If we haven't met yet, I'm Jen. I'm a part-time online clothing reseller, which means I go to thrift stores, I buy used clothes, I list them on eBay and Poshmark, and hopefully sell them for a profit. Today is Monday, April 27th, and I have five items sold in the last three days. This was Friday, Saturday, and Sunday sales. I did not ship on Saturday. I missed a video.
Uh, the first item that sold, sorry, my gross sales amount was $15862.
I'm gonna tell you up front, I have two really low items and three pretty decent items. So, the first one pretty decent.
This one is a coat. It's a kids coat and it's Patagonia. This is called the Down With It Parka. I figured that out because I did a Google Lens search. So, I took a picture of it, put it in Google Lens, and it told me it was the Patagonia Down with it Parka. So, this one I think had maybe this one wasn't it. I had another Patagonia that I listed around the same time that I think had a flaw in it. I had this listed for $60 and the 20% off offer that I send was 48. I don't know if I got there was a lot of interest in this real fast on all platforms and so there were a lot of offers sent and received and I think it was just an offer that was sent. I'm not really sure honestly, but it sold for $48 on Poshmark and it sold in just a week. So, I found this at the bins.
Actually, somebody else found it was one of the trips that I went I think with my sister. I think my sister found it and gave it to me. So, anyway, if that was true, thank you to my sister. And I have an estimated average cost of goods of $2 at the bins. The bins is the Goodwill outlet where you pay by the pound. And usually like with coats and stuff, I do a higher estimated average, but this I did not for some reason. I don't know. I think because it was a kids coat.
Let's see. How much does it weigh?
I use a food scale, not a poster scale.
I use a food scale because that was what I had when I first started. I had bought it for a science experiment with my kids and I had it on hand and I didn't have a postal scale and so I just started using it and I thought, you know what, when I start making some money, I'll buy a postal scale when this one like stops working. It's been four and a half years. It's still It's not perfect. So, this is about a pound and a half. So, $3 was my cost. So, that makes my profit $35.40 after fees and my cost of goods. Okay.
So, the next one is a low sale and I'm going to tell you what I did. I don't know if this is the right thing to do.
This is what I'm doing. Uh, I'm not telling you what to do, just telling you what I'm doing. First of all, how cool is this jacket? It's like a cotton blazer, very plaid. My lighting is a little weird today. Sorry about that.
Uh, so this is vintage. It's Liz Sport, which I think is like a subline of Liz Clayborn.
Made in Hong Kong. It's, you know, it's not perfect. I've had this for over two years. 2 years. in a one month to be exact. So in February and in January and February of this year, I put all of my old items on clearance. So anything that was listed in 20 24 or prior, I started I think I started at like 40% and went all the way to 70%.
And and got rid of quite a few items that way.
And I over the past, you know, March and April occasionally have been putting those items back at like 60% off, just trying to get rid of them. I need some space uh in my store and I kind of just want to call the stuff that's not selling, you know? So, if this hasn't sold at 60 70% off, I I just want to kind of get rid of it, you know? So, I'm trying to make more sales. So, anyway, I was going through the other day and I I took out about four of these bins, these boxes, which I mean, just depending on what's in it, can hold between like 10 and 20 items.
So, I think it was 50 items that I took out.
And some of them I just directly put in a uh a bin to get rid of to uh donate. I could not think of a word. And some of them instead I just delisted them and then relisted them for $10 for each item. And so some that was a really significant difference discount and for some that was I don't know like 30% off because they were already only like $15 or something. So this I don't remember what I had it originally for. So when I posted them for $10, I knew I send out 20% off offers so they're likely going to sell around $8.
And so I just was kind of keeping that in mind. But really at this point like selling them even for really cheap is better than just donating them. Some of some of the things I did donate and I it was more things that like had stains or flaws, things like that that I probably shouldn't have listed in the first place. So anyway, this I paid $1.87 for. It's sold on Poshmark for $8.
And on Poshmark, if you sell something for under $15, instead of the 20% fee, they have the a flat fee of $2.95.
Again, I knew that going in, so I just kind of kept that in mind. So, I still have a profit of $318.
That's really doubling my money almost. And I got my $187 back as well.
So, better than donating. and somebody gets to enjoy that really cool jacket.
Similar but different. This one wasn't really on my sale, but I have a thing for vintage overalls.
And this one is so cute with like this radio flyer. It says radio flyer on here. It has the picture of the wagon.
Just so cute. Little denim overalls. I found these at one of my favorite thrift stores. You know, the comps aren't great. And this it has like this little leather patch and there's wear around it. You know, they're not perfect.
Look at this patch. Oh my gosh, they're just they're so cute. I love little baby overalls.
There there were two little girls at church. Little sisters had overalls on yesterday about died. They were so cute.
Anyway, uh this was I just I just went off the rails. Uh, I listed these for $15.
Somebody offered me 10. I have had these for 11 months and so I went ahead and accepted the offer. You know, 20% would have been $12. So, I'm not going to argue over two bucks, especially when I'm trying to sell things. I'm not trying to keep them, you know. So, I found this at one of my favorite thrift stores. Paid a dollar and a half for it.
And after fees, shipping, and my cost for goods, sorry, this sold on eBay. So they with shipping paid $17.95 and so my uh profit ended up being $6.64.
So I you know I aim for $15 in profit per item. That's kind of my goal. But there are some things I make exceptions for like little baby overalls.
That's one of the exceptions. Okay.
Talking about exceptions, I vowed to never buy torid again, but I always have a caveat. My big butt, if you will. Uh, my big butt is things that have skulls and butterflies on them and look like Y2K tank tops. This is definitely like a baby doll style cami with a lace trim and it has a butterfly with a skull on it and it was new with tags. I'm pretty sure my husband found this in the bins.
This sold in less than 10 days and it's new with tags. Okay, so I'm going to show you something.
So this brand new with tags, $32.90 US.
I listed it for $45.
I listed it for more than what it was worth new and that was because there was a sold comp for that much and I felt like that was crazy. So I maybe could have gotten a little more money than I did. Somebody offered me 3636 and I felt like that was reasonable.
So it sold even with the offer sold for more than what it cost new. Plus, they paid shipping. So, they paid43.25 and I bought it at the bins. So, an estimated average cost of goods of $2.
This is clearly under a pound. So, it did not cost me $2. But after fees, did I tell you their total was4325?
So, minus fees, shipping, and my cost of goods, my profit on this tank top is 28.54.
This is like, you know, I I'm not one to claim that I know what's in style and, you know, aesthetics and things like that. I don't I try I try to keep track.
I try to keep up, but I don't. But I do have teenage daughters, which helps a little. And I do, you know, kind of keep an eye on social media and things like that, as well as what other resellers are selling. And this is one of those things like very Y2K, the butterfly, the lace, the skull, all good things, especially combined together. I did add like I think I added fairy grunge. I don't know if that's fairy grunge, but Y2K definitely uh goth. Whimsy goth.
Um grunge. Did I add grunge? I don't know.
I I added some stuff. I try not to like keyword stuff. I try to be real accurate with what the keywords should be, but I don't always hit the mark. Drastically different is this little dress. This is a soft surroundings dress. It's eyelet and the whole thing is eyelet and it's blue and it's teiered on the bottom.
Very cute. I I don't remember what I used for this, but it I had listed for $39.95.
Now, this one I had listed longer. It didn't sell quite as quickly, but I also think it might have been seasonality.
I don't It is long sleeve, but it's still a very like flowy kind of springy looking dress, especially with the eyelet. So, I had it listed for $40 and on eBay I have a 15% off coupon on my store pretty much all the time. So, they used that coupon plus they paid shipping. So, their total was41.42.
I bought this at a local thrift store for $25 eight months ago.
I did pay promoted fees on this.
Currently, I have maybe half of my store promoted and I don't have anything that I listed 30 days or less, that's not promoted.
And then anything that I listed um in 2024, what year is it? 2024 or prior. So, that would be a net clearance. I don't have any of that promoted because I know my uh profit's already going to be a lot lower with clearance sales and you know how I'm doing that now. So, anyway, my So, I have it promoted I have it promoted at 5%. That's the highest I usually go. I was hoping that it would help kind of generate some more sales. I don't know that it has. So, I paid an extra $2.7 in fees in this. And so, after fee shipping and my cost of goods, it makes my profit on this dress $24.21, which I am very pleased with. I don't know that Soft Surroundings is a great seller for me personally. Uh, but I still tend to buy it, I think, because I like it. I think, and that's not a great reason to buy things to resell.
It's not comps, experience, condition, cost, all of those things are are good things. However, buying things just because you think they're cute. It's not always the best reason. Okay. Anyway, uh my profit for those three days was $98.97. That's the cost that they paid minus my fees, my shipping, my cost of goods. I still have other uh expenses that comes out of that office supplies, more inventory, shipping supplies, subscription fees, and it is taxable income. So, yesterday we were sitting around the fire at our house and my daughter who's 10, she got out her little notebook and her pen and she was writing out and she was like, "I'm making my spring bucket list." So, it got me curious. I'm wondering what is on your spring bucket list. Spring is here full on. Feels very springy. A little chilly in the morning. Uh but feeling nice and sunny and warm in the afternoons. Uh it was kind of chilly all day yesterday, but it was perfect for a fire. So, uh my bucket list is usually the zoo. Uh but we didn't get a zoo membership this year. That was kind of intentional.
Uh we usually have a zoo membership, but we decided not to do that. So, probably not the zoo. Uh, but I always really like to go berry picking. That's usually not until like late May or early June.
Um, kayaking of course is always on my bucket list and I'm hoping to do that fairly soon. I thought it was going to happen last week and then it there were other things that happened last week that uh kind of derailed that. I had a sick kid, so that's that's no fun. Uh, so kayaking, of course. Hiking. I love hiking. I would say it's on my bucket list, but that's something that we do regularly. Uh, it's a just a part of our weekly routine. Uh, what else do Oh, picnics. I want to go on a picnic.
I found we were in Florida at the beginning of March, uh, visiting my in-laws and we went into a coffee shop and they had this whole, you know, spring bucket list. It was really cute.
I took a picture of it. I should have looked at it again to see what was on there because there probably were some good ideas. Um, but I don't remember what any of them are other other than go to a coffee shop. And again, something I do not really on the regular anymore. Uh, I try to be really intentional about that, but I do love to sit outside at a really sweet little coffee shop. There's not the coffee shop I like the most here does have like a little patio uh with a with a table. So in the spring and summer I do sit outside when I go there.
Um which is just not very often. So um yeah, let me know what's on your spring bucket list. What are some things that you're looking forward to doing while the weather is turning nice and lovely hopefully where you are? I know we live in lots of different parts of the country and the world. So, I think it's fun to hear other people's experiences and lives. It's interesting to me, so maybe it's interesting to you, too. All right.
Thanks so much for hanging out with me, uh, seeing what I sold. It's always so much more fun to share it with a friend.
Uh, make sure you like the video if you liked it. Subscribe if you haven't already. I'll see you soon.
