Economic hardship and workplace stress drive consumers to purchase small luxuries as coping mechanisms, creating a psychological cycle of guilt and continued consumption; this phenomenon has emerged as a distinct market category in Japan, with spending in the 'guilty consumption' sector growing from 3.4 trillion yen in 2019 to 4.1 trillion yen in 2024, as companies like Suntory launch products specifically engineered to appeal to this emotional need.

The Japanese soda engineered to make you feel guilty.Ajouté :
The Japanese soda engineered to make you feel guilty. In March 2026, Sunouri launched its first new beverage brand in 14 years. It's called Guilty Tans and Nope. A carbonated drink with a sugar level deliberately set well above typical sodas. Engineered for what the company openly describes as addictive taste. The marketing angle is right there in the name. Guilty. Across Japan's cities, a quiet crisis is playing out in convenience stores, cat cafes, and late night ramen bars.
Young Japanese workers, many earning under 250,000 yen a month, are increasingly spending on small luxuries, not to celebrate, but to cope. You buy the premium convenience store dessert, the overpriced character merchandise, the solo hotel station, and feel briefly human again. Then comes the guilt. Then comes the next purchase. It now has a name. Japanese marketers call the category guilty consumption and nope is its newest spearhead. Family Mart has run guilty convenience store meals campaigns. The Shabu Shabu chain Shabuyo built a menu around Guilty Supreme Gourmet ramen. Total spending in the category grew from 3.4 trillion yen in 2019 to 4.1 trillion yen in 2024. The pressure beneath is immense. Reported stress jumped from 53% in 2021 to nearly 83% in 2023. While around a third of workers under 35 sit in non-regular contracts, unstable, poorly paid, with little future security. The expectation to appear fine makes it all invisible. When rest feels impossible, consumption becomes the closest substitute.
