Gas prices affecting holiday travel?Added:
Who's ready for summer? Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner, Memorial Day a week from today. And with gas prices in Ohio averaging $4.54 right now, people are planning to change their trips to compensate. That's the question we're asking. According to AAA, even though gas is up $1.50 from this time last year, a record number of people will still still hit the road to get to their holiday destination. We spoke with Jim Garrity with AAA who tells us, regardless of price, people will find a trip that suits their financial situation. Historically, what we've seen at AAA is when the gas prices go up, people don't call it a deal breaker.
They look at other ways that they can offset those costs to make that trip happen. They may look at it and say, "Well, if it's $1.50 more to fill up and I have a a 13-gallon tank, you can actually do that math, figure out how much more you have to pay." And a lot of folks will look at that amount of money and say, "That's not going to keep me from traveling."
People will compensate for the higher gas prices in other ways, like choosing to go for fewer days or not going out to dinner. To help calculate how much your road trip will use how much gas you'll use on your road trip, you can use AAA's website to find out exactly what you'll be paying. Now, as for flying, Trent, do you have any guess on what the number one destination out of Northeast Ohio is?
>> Akron.
No, if you're leaving Northeast Ohio, you're flying somewhere.
>> Oh, from Northeast Ohio.
>> You're you're flying to a state. Any guesses on what that state is?
>> New York. Wrong.
Florida. Florida.
>> But I'm sure a lot I mean, a lot of people do fly from here to New York.
>> imagine after Well, I guess it's this weekend, so they're going to be coming from New York to Cleveland. Is that's what it's the Memorial Day cuz we got the Knicks coming to to Cleveland.
>> Oh, well, then yeah.
>> to be a big one.
>> Mhm. This shot I thought we were flying to Akron. Sorry. I was
