School districts are increasingly focusing on teacher retention and career pathways over external recruitment programs like Teach for America, as demonstrated by San Antonio ISD's decision to not renew 25 TFA teachers' contracts to save $200,000 while investing in internal certification support pathways and registered apprenticeship programs to build long-term teaching workforce stability.

KSAT 12 Nightbeat : May 08, 2026Added:
It's one of just four centers in the whole country that translates and creates books in braille for students that are blind or visually impaired. I got a tour of this entire facility here in San Antonio and got to talk. Tonight, a San Antonio family is begging for someone with answers to come forward because their brother was hit and killed here just a couple of days ago and San Antonio police are still searching for who did it. We'll break down their investigation.
And we're on the lookout for some storms off to the west, increasing rain chances for parts of this weekend. We'll break it down.
>> SISD has just announced that they will not be taking on any new Teach for America teachers in the next school year. We'll talk about the contracts that are not being renewed and the reason the district is giving.
>> Thanks so much for joining us tonight.
I'm Marie Zuniga >> and I am Myra Arthur alongside meteorologist Adam Casky. We are talking about Mother's Day weekend rain chances and you have an important message about the timing of all that.
>> Yes. Just because you may see a high percentage on Sunday, that doesn't mean it's going to be all day. It's basically after dark. Okay. So, you have all day Sunday and it's not going to be a weekend wash out. Let's get to the rain chances overnight tonight. We kick them up to 40% midnight all the way through 7 a.m. It's not really going to be as widespread as we previously anticipated, but still we'll we will see some helpful rain in several parts of South Central Texas. Just under half of us getting in on some of that action. It's all going to start off to the west and march eastward. As it moves eastward, we could see a storm actually organize a little bit and that would most likely be somewhere between Eagle Pass, Crystal City, Pleasanton, Cula, and over toward Beville. Basically, south of San Antonio, there's a chance that we could see a little um little organization from a storm that would then have heavier rainfall and maybe slightly higher winds. We can't rule out the off chance of a severe storm, especially south of town. overnight tonight. We get into tomorrow, a lot of sunshine during the middle of the day and then that could lead to a few popup afternoon showers here and there. Not a significant chance. And honestly, I think this model is a little overly aggressive, but it just shows you what's potential tomorrow afternoon. So, it's tonight through sunrise, midnight through sunrise, and then tomorrow afternoon, 3 to 700 p.m. a few random pop-up showers. Talking more about Mother's Day and the cold front and its storms in just a bit.
>> All right, Adam, thank you. Tonight, a San Antonio family needs your help.
Their brother, 37year-old Joseph Otto, was hit and killed and San Antonio police are still looking for the suspect.
>> Now, the crash happened off Medina Base Road on April 24th on the southwest side. You see where this happened right here and Case Avery Everett spoke to Otto's sister who says they're struggling to grieve with this case still very wide open.
>> This is what he had on the roster. His cowboy hat never came back to us, but this did.
>> Sandra Ad is holding on to what's left of her brother.
>> It was a crime. You don't just hit a person and leave a person to die for.
>> 37year-old Joseph Ado died two weeks ago. Police say he was killed by a hit and- run driver. It happened here near the intersection of the Loop 410 Access Road and Medina Base Road. San Antonio police say a driver noticed a man lying unconscious in the middle of the street and then they called 911.
SAPD still has not made an arrest in this case. The department says the driver who hit Otto will face one charge of collision involving injury. They did not give Kesat any suspect information.
What do you know about the investigation so far?
>> It's been 2 weeks and we don't know nothing. All our church family has been praying. They've been coming every day.
>> Even in your heartache, your face lights up looking at the photos of your brother.
>> He was the light of our family. How do you want him to be remembered?
>> I want him to be remembered as a good brother, a good son, a good father, a best friend to everybody.
>> He loved to hug everybody >> as they wait for someone to come forward, keeping parts of their brother close.
>> And we will hold it until we meet again.
>> Avery Everett, KAT2 News.
Now turning to a crash that turned into a murder suicide investigation. A Southwest ISD police corporal shot and killed his wife before killing himself on Loop 410 on Wednesday. Armando Hernandez worked for the district as a law enforcement officer for 15 years.
Records show Elizabeth Hernandez was killed in the incident. According to the medical examiner, Armando Hernandez died by a self-inflicted gunshot. Both were 46 years old. Police responded to what was believed to be a crash Wednesday on Loop 14 near Valley High. But inside the car, they found the two people dead from gunshot wounds. Now, we want to remind you that if you or a loved one is experiencing domestic violence, you are not alone and help is available right now. You can scan the QR code on the screen to view a full list of resources in our area. You can also call 988 if you are struggling with thoughts of suicide.
A dog attack that left an 80year-old woman in the hospital may lead to criminal charges.
>> Case Avery Everett has been following the story since the attack happened yesterday in a northwest side neighborhood. She's with us as you can see here. So Avery, uh you've heard from neighbors who say that this has been a reported dog problem in this area for what, a number of months now?
>> Yeah. And even as recently as last week when that same dog attacked a 5-year-old girl. But the director, John Garry, said before last week, confirming evidence against this dog and its owner was difficult. Reports about concerns of this dog date back to as far as last spring. Remember, this dog is an American Straford Shire Terrier. Gary says when investigators tried to look into calls and reports last year, they weren't able to get on there witness statements or find proof about this dog.
Now, that was until last week. I told you all last night on the Nightbeat about the young girl who was bitten in the arms and ribs, as you can see in those photos right there. ACS says one day after that happened, they received a dangerous dog affidavit. Gary says investigators were looking for the dog, but the owner was uncooperative.
>> We will be um pursuing attack by dog uh in this incident um working with our prosecutor's office and with the police department u and then we'll we'll continue to look at what other charges could be possible.
>> ACS now has the dog in quarantine. The director told us his team has been in contact with the owner, but he did not share any more detail. Again, charges in this case are really just still a possibility. Myra Ernie, we really have to wait to see what comes out of this investigation.
>> All right, Avery, we will follow that.
Thank you. Another lawsuit filed against CPS Energy tonight after two homes exploded in that north side neighborhood last month off of Preston Hollow Drive.
Timothy and Kimberly Noel and their daughter are still hospitalized. The couple is still in critical condition at Brook Army Medical Center. Court records filed on their behalf accuse CPS Energy of failing to properly maintain its gas system. The suit also alleges the explosion was preventable. The family is asking for a jury trial and each family member is seeking more than a million dollars in damages.
A man has been found guilty of damaging government property after driving into two ICE vehicles outside of a north side Walmart back in January. You might remember that video there. 25-year-old Robin Argote Brooks was convicted of that charge, but was acquitted of forcibly assaulting a federal officer.
During his trial, he said he panicked behind the wheel when the unidentified masked officers approached his car and told him to get out. During cross-examination, Argote Brooks was told his parole status, which had allowed allowed him to legally stay in the US, was terminated in May of 2025.
He said he never received notice and did not believe he had done anything wrong.
Argote Brooks will be sentenced in September.
>> The mothers of two San Antonio teens who were killed in a double shooting at a southside apartment are continuing to try to seek justice for their sons. The shooting happened in July of 2022 when 19year-old Gregorio Ricardo Cordova Mahia and 15year-old Angel Ray Garcia were shot and killed on Pleasanton Road.
Their mothers say that their pain is still very raw and the search for answers has not stopped. Last year, a billboard went up hoping that someone would come forward.
>> It's still hard. It's still difficult, but I just um I just hope and pray that that we find who who did this already.
>> We just want justice for the boys so they can rest in peace.
>> The mothers say they will not give up until this case is solved. If you have any information that could help investigators, SAPD asks you to call Crimestoppers at 21102247867.
There could be a reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
The city of New Bron Falls apologizing to citizens and mayoral candidates after prematurely declaring a winner in the city's election for mayor. City officials initially declared that challenger Michael French had defeated the incumbent mayor Neil Linards, but neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote. The Texas Constitution states that any election for an office term of two years or more requires a candidate to win a majority of the vote.
And if that does not happen, the two top candidates will go to a runoff. The city has since put out an apology and have yet to announce a date for that runoff.
All right, you know it is game night.
Thousands of rowdy Spurs fans packed the rocket lock in terror tonight for the official Spurs game three watch party.
>> It was a lot to take in for sure. Many of them arrived hours before tip off and they're hoping to leave tonight with another Spurs victory against the Timberwolves. Here are some of those sights and sounds.
>> San Antonio, >> I want to put you on the spot here, but what do you think's going to happen tonight? Who's going to win?
>> Yeah.
>> I think we're going to win and beat some Timberwolves.
>> Go first win.
Fel and Castle is going to go off and Wim Victor Wimby the alien. Let's go.
You can probably hear them right now over here downtown from Loantara. Well, still ahead, the Spurs, of course, battling out in Minnesota tonight. The latest on the race for safe. Plus, a local school district will not have teachers from Teach for America in their schools next year. How SISD is hoping that a local teacher pipeline can help.
San Antonio ISD will not place new Teach for America members in their schools next year. That's a new announcement from that district.
>> The reason given was a desire for more full-time teacher retention from other sources as well as budget shortfalls.
Courtney Freriedman has been following the teacher shortage in our state and region. And the statement from SISD mentions a program she just reported on this week.
>> Teach for America and SISD have had a long relationship, over 15 years. Teach for America currently has 25 teachers at SISD whose contracts end at the end of this school year and SISD has confirmed they will not be renewed. 22 other TFA teachers have contracts that extend to next school year, so they'll stay until then. SISD saying the announcement does not affect the TFA summer program and their tutoring program. SISD said TFA teachers cost the district $4,000 per year per member in their first two years of service. The choice not to renew these 25 teachers would save the district $200,000 over the next two years.
We asked if the decision to cut back also had to do with the district's budget deficit, and they said it did.
The district's announcement Thursday said, "While some core members remain in the district after two years of service, our focus is shifting to retention and career pathways. To increase the likelihood of teachers staying in the classroom longer, SISD is focused on replacing external core members with internal homegrown candidates through our certification support pathways and registered apprenticeship work. That apprenticeship work is exactly what I reported on this week.
There truly is no job more important than teaching.
>> Students at SISD's Travis Early College High School can graduate with an associates degree in education, then become paid apprentices while they finish college, and then hopefully return to teach at the district. The first batch of students in that program will graduate this month, but there are only 15 of them becoming apprentices and won't be leading their own classrooms for two more years.
So, we asked SISD how the district will replace 25 TFA teachers they'll be losing. They said, quote, "SISD has a variety of pathway programs and support to bring in additional support. We are not anticipating that the shift will result in an increase in teacher vacancies." Teach for America sent case out a statement as well reacting to the news saying, "We will continue to support the 70 plus TFA alumni who are serving as teachers and staff at SISD and have made the district their home and appreciate the continued collaboration with SISD in service of providing students with an excellent education." Teach for America also told me that they provide teachers and services for a lot of other districts in the San Antonio area. Courtney Freriedman, KAT2 News.
All right, looking outside with live cam once again this evening. We do have some potential showers to watch out for tonight and then of course on Mother's Day.
>> Happy Mother's Day to Myra Arthur.
That's right. Thank you. Thank you guys.
>> Yes. And most of the day it's going to be sunny and dry. It's just after dark basically. Watch out for some storms and maybe some strong storms. But >> brunch is still in play.
>> Oh, brunch cookout for >> sure. Whatever you got. Okay, cool.
>> Yeah, 100%. Good.
>> Okay, let's get to the weekend forecast.
Now, notice that 30% tomorrow. That's a little bit in the morning and then a few random popup storms in the afternoon.
But by and large, I think we'll have a lot of dry conditions on Saturday. We get into Sunday, sunny and dry. It's 8:00 p.m. to midnight. We have to watch for the thunderstorms. So, don't let that 60% chance there scare you all day and, you know, trick you to be indoors all day. It's because that's after 8:00 p.m. Basically, that's the opportunity for the storms on Sunday. And some good rainfall within some of them. Some much needed rain, but the chance of some hail as well. Some localized hail. Just something we'll have to watch. Quiet on authority rate, excuse me, quiet on authority radar. Not much action out there. Little bit in Mexico. And this is where we're watching because that's where the energy is coming in, the rain making and storm making energy. Now, so far, most of it has trended pretty far to the south. And I think there's one new computer model that's uh initializing pretty well with this, and that has the vast majority of the showers and storms. Maverick County, Dimit, Lel, McMullen, and eastward uh toward B County and Live Oak overnight tonight and early tomorrow. But I do still think some will pop up in and around San Antonio and Bear County late tonight and very early tomorrow morning.
Let's go to Sunday. So scattered tonight, early tomorrow. Sunday, I think it's going to be a little more widespread. That is in the evening and nighttime hours. Cold front drops into the Hill Country about 7 8:00 p.m. Now, the timing of that can change and it all hinges on the time of that cool front.
It's a weak cold front. Then 9 10:00 gets closer to and around parts of San Antonio, Bear County, and surrounding areas. Within these showers and storms, there could be some localized hail.
Nothing for you to worry about right now. Just something we'll be watching for as we track the evolution of these storms and into Sunday night. Likely tracking some scattered and you could say numerous showers and storms. These ones here could bring a quick 1 to three inches in neighborhoods that get hit by them, especially if you get hit by a few of the storms. As for tonight's action, upper level swirl here in West Texas.
That's going to be throwing the energy our way. So far, that energy has been farther to the south, Eagle Pass toward Laredo. That's where most of the energy has been. But either way, I think there's going to be enough along the trough axis to kickstart some scattered showers and storms even closer to San Antonio and Bear County. So, here's another way to look at it here. The big picture, most of the energy, like I said, between Eagle Pass and Laredo thus far, that's why these southern counties are more likely um to see the significant accumulations. And keep in mind that is where we have the exceptional drought. The most the worst drought category basically is where we have the highest chance of good rainfall tonight. So cross your fingers for Dimit Lel McMullen counties. 76 was our high today. That's the best we could do.
Average is 85. Record 102. So back in 1927. So it shows you the possibilities this time of year. We can hit 100. And we have this time of year. We're just nowhere near it this year because today we had the clouds, cooler temperatures.
Temperatures falling down near 70° overnight tonight. 68 in the morning, 78 at noon, then 88 for the high temperature tomorrow. And notice that 30% chance later on in the day for a few pop-up showers. Upper 80s with a little extra sun, about 90°. And as I mentioned, getting into the lower 90s on Sunday, your Mother's Day. Then next week, sunshine. And hey, we're not talking 90s. I mean, 80s to near 90°, but we're not tallying up the 90° days.
>> All right, Adam. Thanks.
>> Beautiful. Okay. A little too close for comfort in Minnesota right now, Mary, for the Spurs.
>> Yeah, especially after the Spurs started the game up 18-3 on Minnesota. Then they went into the halftime break tied at 51.
We will update you on game three in Minneapolis right after the break. But also, coach Mitch Johnson reflects on his coaching debut season and his tandem with assistant coach Sean Sweeney.
>> I think it's probably more the team than the venue or the arena. And I think, you know, again, we expect their their style of playing branded basketball to be what we've seen recently. and um probably that even more based on them coming off a loss and getting back home and being excited to be in front of their home crowd and and be very physical and competitive.
>> The Spurs trying to put an end to a sevengame losing streak on the Timberwolves home court. And what a start. Victor Webbin with the rejection on one end and a little give and go on the transition with Julian Champeny for the hoop and harm. WBY had two early blocks and nine points. The Spurs started the game six of 19 from the field and didn't allow a field goal for the first seven minutes and forced four turnovers. However, when uh Wolves star Anthony Edwards came in off the bench, the game it tightened up a little bit.
Now, let's go to a live scoring update from Target Center. In the third quarter, the game is 6660. The Spurs with the advantage. Though at halftime, the game was tied at 51. Edwards had 19 points in the first half. We had 16 and there were a combined 30 free throw attempts in that first half. Something to key in keep an eye on there. And again, the Spurs lead 66- 60 in the third. Well, before the game, head coach Mitch Johnson peeled back the curtain and talked about his decision to hire Shawn Sweeney, a St. Paul, Minnesota native as his assistant coach without ever having met him. And he talked about his first year as head coach and what he's enjoyed about coaching in the playoffs. Here's what coach Johnson says is different about the game this time of year.
there's just an intensity, a physicality, a toughness, all those things that go in and and regular season has it, but every single possession in the playoffs seems to um just max out at it. And then you see, you know, whatever those conversations that come behind it, whether it's the game's different or it gets called different or, you know, whatever. But I think more than anything, the players make the game different. And then there's a ripple effect of that. I think the biggest part of that is the competitiveness. And I've really enjoyed that.
>> Competitiveness like Dylan Harper blocking Carter Brighton shot from behind at shootaround. As for he and Sweeney, their chemistry as coaches of a 62- win regular season team on a dominant playoff run revolves around the fashion in which they coach. According to Johnson, >> I got the job almost literally a year ago from today. Getting to know Shawn and talking to him, it just felt like a really, really good fit. I don't know how productive we've been, but I think we've really enjoyed just coaching hard.
I think that would be the one thing I would strongly advocate for all of our coaches on staff from the top to bottom.
I think that we we coach our players hard and I would advocate for our players that I think they allow us to coach them hard and I think that's a really really cool dynamic to be a part of and I'm blessed to have players and coaches that that do that.
>> Big shoes to fill after coach Pop stepped down and he's doing a great job so far. All right, make sure to join us everyone before tip off uh for game four of the Western Conference semi-finals between the Spurs and Timberwolves. It's our race for safe special that begins at 5:30 on Sunday that you all need to tune in to. The KAT2 sports team has your Spurs playoff run covered. All right, the Missions are drawing not just baseball lovers to their game this weekend after the break.
