Italian pronunciation follows consistent phonetic rules where letters are read as written, with key patterns including: 'chi' and 'g' produce hard sounds (like 'k') when followed by 'o' or 'u', but softer sounds when followed by 'e' or 'a'; double consonants are essential as they can change word meanings (e.g., 'pa' vs. 'penna'); and the 'h' before 'a' or 'e' strengthens the preceding consonant sound.

like me. Sorry, I was already speaking Italian.
Put a like if you can hear me. It's a streaming so it might be um we might have some delays.
Ciao, Alison. Chiao, Jeffrey. I'm excited. I'm going to wait a couple of minutes and then we start.
Um, we need because it's a streaming and unfortunately I can't hear you. You need to use the chat as much as we can. Um, this is a test. Uh, obviously we it's the first time that I use OBS streaming live. Um, but at least I can show you the screen and I will try to go very slowly um, as much as I can. I don't mind to repeat myself. I like to repeat myself. So, don't worry about that. The important thing that you enjoy the experience. I will I'm going to turn off the light.
And so obviously I'm mother tongue in Italian. Finally, at least I have a skill. And um I really enjoy my language. I don't consider myself a professor of Italian.
I teach Italian on Prely privately. So if you want to do then onetoone if you want to improve your pronunciation, you can book me. But it's separate. But this is something that I really I'm really passionate about and and I really hope that you enjoy and you can learn something. That is my main goal. So for today uh I will wait two more minutes and then we start. So for today what I want to focus on is the alphabet pronunciation some greetings um the basic of Italian which I think it's much much easier than Italian while we're waiting a couple of minutes can you tell me from where you are from in the chat please don't be shy I'm not going to call out name so don't worry just put in the chat where are you from?
At least we give a couple of minutes to people to join and put also in the chat if you can't hear me. That's important because I'm watching as well. So, I'm watching on my screen and the other screen to see uh and I can't hear anything actually. So, let me really know if you can and put also in the No, I think it's quite clear.
Can you hear me right? Okay.
Okay. Let me share the screen. Come on guys, don't be shy. Put in the chat where are you from. If you're from England, Spain, it help also me to understand how to adjust the class. I know that every time it will change. I want to do this format.
Florida.
Um I will try the the classes will be always on Wednesday 8:00 p.m. UK time which I think it can be a compromise with the different time zone. Um yeah, obviously if I have a lot of people that they want to have a different time, we can try to study something about it. But yeah.
Okay, we start.
Let's see if I can use it.
Yes. Okay, I'm getting better in these things.
Okay, let's max maximize.
Now you see my face.
Perfect. So we are going to start with the alphabets.
So no, sorry.
I'm not very good to do that.
Wait then I'm coming back.
Okay.
You should see now this screen.
Perfect.
Okay. So about the Italian alphabet is I I would say the Italian pronunciation is quite easy compared to other languages like English which I'm still struggling about especially because you have this combination of vowels that is driving me insane.
Um what we say is that what we read we would say. So there are some phonetics rules but are pretty easy. I'm going now to read the alphabet one more one time. Then obviously I can't hear you but try to do the same sound as me as much as you can. So we start with a b she a f g a e j this is English today. Kapa L M O P C S T U Vopia Vopia Vu X epsilon zeta I'm now I'm going to read it slower try to repeat and if you have any question if you want me to repeat a sound please put it in the chat remember this is our tool to communicate so please use it. Remember, this class is free, so take the most advantage that you can.
At least you can see also the way I say the laptop.
Okay.
Ah, B, G, D, A, F, G, Aka E sorry for this pronunciation now I don't know what pron I I have only the English equivalent at the moment J I will check I don't know why my brain is not working at the moment Okay, excuse that very much. Kappa l M N Oh, B.
Cool.
S D U V.
Do X, Epsilon, Zeta.
I don't speak Polish. I'm sorry. There is only a word that in Italian means something negative, but in Polish it means hello.
I think in slang, which is shimma, which in Italian is a bit something different. It means silly or stupid.
Okay. So the first time I was in Poland and I I I I could hear Shima, it was hilarious.
Okay. Do you have any question about the letter of the alphabet? If there is any other letter that you want me to repeat, please um let me know.
Yes. So this one we can say there are two way to pronounce it because if you think it's a basically a double D. So we would say doia. So double do it's the same. You can pronounce it uh the way um the way you prefer it.
V or any other questions.
Okay.
Now we are going into the phonetics rule of Italians which are not many.
I put the timing because I like to talk a lot.
So the phonetics rule of Italian as we said the majority when you see an Italian text usually you would read it as it is. However, there are some pronunciation.
Usually, we have the letter ch.
Sorry. What do you mean with ddt?
>> Why you are replying? What's that?
Um I carry on. Okay. Um so I don't know there is a loop of so we have the letter.
Okay. So the the sorry I saw all these comments and there was a little bit. So about the pronunciation like rule number one the letter chi and g they follow two different patterns it depends which vowel is followed by. If we have followed by a o or u the sound is I put here two example with the English kind of translate like phonetic translation. So here we have the letter chi. It's followed by a. So this chi it's like a kind of k. So we would say can and the same thing happen with the letter G. So it's followed by A. So it's going to be G. So G.
Okay.
We can put other example.
Uh okay. Here we have an the letter ch followed by a kaza house.
Let's find another uh let's find the city from nearby my hometown.
So here we have the letter chi followed by o. So it's still a hard sound. So we would say ko.
Okay, Ko is a city in the north of Italy.
Ko maybe you know let's try with the the G sound.
Um, okay. This one is a more tricky. Um, but again, we have the Oh, no. Sorry, guys.
This is for the next one. Sorry. Um, So we have the letter G is followed by U. So it's going to be G. Okay. So very basic. Remember if you have a ch.
If you have G followed by a O, it's a hard sound. If we want to compare it to the English language, this one it's a kind of K. So C and this one it's G.
Any question about this or any words that you saw maybe in television on menu uh with some Italian friends and you want to check together.
Let me know if there is any question.
Okay. Now, if we have the letter G and the letter G followed by E or A, the sound gets softer.
In English we can say it's a kind of when you put this kind of combination.
So in this way this is the most famous Italian word ciao.
Another one. CH.
So it's not Ko, but it's CH.
And the same thing happen with the G sound. So here this this everyone loves that. is going to be gelato ice cream.
Um, let me think about another word.
It's not but it's any questions so far?
And I would say this is actually there is another one that I put at the bottom to scare anyone. But basically this is the majority of the phonetics in Italian.
It's just these combinations that create two different sound. Hard sound remember hard. So it's a o soft sound. It's e something that you will see also in Italian but that we will see later on.
You will see compare maybe now also in English will you might see a lot of vowels together.
Um in some parts of Italy they would pronounce it even more.
In other part it it could sound like that the the first vowel is shorter than the second one.
This word for example I wouldn't say cho I wouldn't spell it out like that but I would say cello. So the e is very short and you can hear more the a sound but that it's more later on. It's not really relevant now, but it can create sometime remember with a lot of students before um it could create a bit of confusion when there are many vowels together.
Any questions?
If you have any question, don't be shy, guys. Ask also if you want me to if you want me to um repeat the alphabet or any other letter or if you want more examples.
If you're okay, we can go ahead.
Obviously, with the letter E and A, we have also in Italian, we need also to have a stronger sound as well because we have thousand of words.
So to make this sound stronger, what we do is to put an H before example, this is the most beautiful word that I keep hearing mispronounced because in the majority of the like in the rest of the world you will pronounce it as bruschetta but it's not because there is an H here.
So this one makes the sound stronger. So it's going to be br. So this is okay.
There is a difference between ch.
Okay. This one it's a soft sound because we have ch plus a ch. And this one is a stronger sound because we place before the A or the E the H. So it become okay.
Now the best part of Italian language and this is I think also where everyone is teasing us is the double consonant and this is why I think also when I speak English we make this kind of rhythm uh when we speak but the double consonant are vital part of the Italian language because words can have different meanings.
I put this example these two words there are two different words they have two different meanings one the first one it means punishment and it's pronounced pa the second one we have a double consonant and it means um pen so how do you do the the double consonant, you just need to empa emphasize empathize the sound. So it's going to be pen pen.
M for example, this is another word.
It's not mama, but it's m another um another word. thinking it's lovely when you think about example and they don't no um obviously we don't speak like this like I wouldn't never say to someone but when you learn Italian at I would suggest you if you see words in the menu or if you're watching a you're listening to music or if you're watching like a movie and you see maybe with the subtitle try to do this exercise when I think I was dyslexical when I was sleep or I don't know I had some problem with the doubles and that was an exercise that they give it to me.
Malo and it helps to make that sound then it will become more natural.
Do we make mistake with con the with doubles? Yes. Especially because maybe we don't write a lot. We use text messages as in every other languages.
Maybe you forget the double. You forget maybe the the double here and there. It happens.
And nothing like I think everyone I make a lot of mistake as well when I speak I make up some words I change the endings um so it's really normal but remember double consonant this is like your um your master to to learn from that then I put some sounds that are quite tricky but there are some equivalents if you want in English. Obviously, I use English as a reference language. I don't know where other people comes from, but if you're Spanish, it's basically similar. If you're French, maybe can be tricky. If you're German, it can be interesting.
So, this one, this combination, it's quite tricky.
The rule would say that the the first letter is quite silent because we wouldn't pronounce it as we would say but it's a particular sound and I think the the equivalent it can be the word like million that it represent a kind of sound that it's similar one famous word that you really need if you like to cook garlic.
Alio alis, but it's fine.
Um, no, I don't speak Russian. I can speak a bit of Spanish, English.
Okay. So remember when you see this combination which is also an article but we will learn it later on the sound can be equivalent to million. So other words feel and then there is this beautiful sound if you're Spanish obviously it's easy because it's like like ina in English it can be the equivalent of onion canon.
Okay.
Famous word. It is not bathroom or toilet.
Mister or gentleman.
Now I left something at the back because it And um it can be tricky sometime for some students. Um but unfortunately we have words we have this combination. So so this sound follow similar rules of the letter ch and the letter g.
So when we have a u the sound is hard. It's like um for example, sorry I'm replying also to the chat so I'm getting confused. So um for example, so sh is followed by o. So it's going to be a hard sound.
receipts.
Here we have. So again hard sound squ.
If this sound is followed by e or a it becomes soft.
So for example, ham, we would say proto fish.
Ah, there was a test I did I want to show you. Okay. So, let's review quickly and please ask me any question and then we do a little test. So, please be active now because I need to understand if you get it, if it's clear, if you have any doubt and etc. Let's restart from the alphabet. I'm going to read it again.
A B G A F G A E J Kappa L N O P U S T U V Xilon Zeta. A correction because my brain I think I'm a bit tired. this letter E long. I don't know why my brain is sticky J, but it's E E long. It's like a long E.
Sorry, a long I.
Then we said that when we have chi, G and SH, the sound are different. If they're followed by a O, it's a strong sound. So it's going to be kaza, gate, squ.
If it's followed by e, or e, the sound becomes softer.
So for example, Double consonant very important because they distinguish like words can have different meaning. So when we have a double consonant we need to read it emphasize as much as you can at first.
This sound is similar to million example alo then we have this sound that in English it's pronounced but in Italian it's similar to onion or canyon famous word and that was something else. Then important thing as well when you learn the language remember like like my advice is personally to go slow. And this is also my mistake sometime because before we do the little test once this is important at least you can see. So when you learn a language what is important is to embrace it enjoy it.
I would usually this is what I say to my student don't go as a Ferrari and this is my also my fault when I start learning Japanese start buying books of Japanese eating only Japanese only watching movie in Japanese like an obsession.
I realized unless you are very special usually it doesn't work because what happen is that you go as a Ferrari and then you don't have any more petrol and you give up learning a language.
Learning a language should be like an enjoyable experience where slowly slowly you build up then languages are difficult per se. So never give up.
and keep trying. Obviously, there are going to be parts of the language that maybe there is no equivalent in your own language. So, it can be tricky because it's like I don't understand it.
Give time on that. And the most important thing is to have a goal when you learn language like I want to master Italian. I'm going to live in Italy. I have an Italian partner. remember that goal because when you have a difficulties or you are fed up, you don't want to do exercise, you don't want to do homework, you don't understand the concept, if you think about that goal is what is driving you to go ahead and forward and that is the most important thing. Um then an advice that usually I give is to embrace as much as you can. I don't know from where you're from, but most probably they're going to be there going to be like an Italian community with technology. I think it's very different compared to other like when I start learning languages that we have only books and now we have YouTube, Netflix, uh Facebook. So my advice is try to join an Italian community also just to read the text if you can. try to type sometime maybe there is an evation a new opening just go we love when people try to learn our language so try to to try don't be shy because it's the only way that you can learn it's not just staying at home and doing exercise that you're going to learn a language is a mix of things and everyone is different going to be people that are faster there are people that may be just listening, people that they need to do exercise and practice. You need to find your own way. That's the only thing that they can say. Um, okay. All these messages like that.
Okay. Do you want to do a little test?
But please use the chat because it's important.
It's really important for me to understand if you're listening and to practice in this way.
I'm going to say some words.
Obviously, I'm going now to leave the this the slides open so you can still have a look. I'm going to say these words. Can you put it in the chat?
Okay.
Are you ready guys? Come on. Show me the enthusiasm to learn the language.
That's good. That's the spirit. Bravism like this. Okay. So the following words.
So I'm a bit teacher sometime.
I like to challenge people. Um but don't worry. Okay. The first word I repeat it one more time.
It's one word. I'm trying I'm trying to basically split it in the way I pronounce it.
Try to type it.
Come on, Elison. Show me that you understand the pronunciation.
He please.
Do I need to come there and force you to type?
Okay, maybe it's too difficult.
Let's try with even though it's written there, but it's fine. Gelato.
No, sorry. It's a very visible job. So, no.
Okay, let's try this word.
Okay, I'm going to repeat that word.
If I read what you write, I would read it as guar the other word for the other people if you want to try sor don't worry about the meaning of the word right now just for try to focus on the pronunciation Jeffrey Senor let's do there is there is only one little thingy but braa you the what for me was very important it was that you could get the key bra then I'm going to type all the solution Second word soren.
Okay, let's do this one. It can be a bit tricky.
Zuko zuko zuko sugar. But don't type it in.
Zuk, sorry. Zuko.
Zuk. Okay.
You are amazing.
Bravo.
Okay, let's do the last one because I want to show you just something extra as well before we shut down the class.
Capi.
I'm typing in the chat with another account with a solution. But Alison, you've been great.
Capino, come on. Capuccino is the most famous word. The other people that are watching, come on. Don't be shy.
Remember, you're amazing. It's free. You can practice a bit. Learn something.
Mama mia.
Okay, Alison, because you're on fire, I'm going to give another word. Okay, let's try this one actually.
BTO.
Billto.
Bill, Bill.
Bravo bra.
Okay, I put with the other account that I have the solution. So if you did great actually it was only they have two double error and um that is okay. This one usually I don't discuss much because I understand that especially English people it can be a bit difficult for the sound. You just need to roll your R and um it's just practice and time. Um you just um if it can help sometime if you when you're at home and you have I don't know like like now write what I wrote for example it can be an exercise. So let's take for example this sentence.
You can try to roll the sound. Golden pronunciation rules.
So you put your tongue.
It's basically before your teeth and you try to do which is softer compared to the Spanish one. And that can be the exercise as a homework. For example, hard Let me see other words.
You literally all the sound for longer.
You You can try to emphasize as much as you can the sorry the and it can help.
I mean it's just practice. Okay. Now before I want to do these because I love that. Okay. So these are quite famous Italian words that are used um around the world.
Let try to see if you can now read it.
Try by yourself and then I'm going to read it to correct it.
And they have also my dog that is calling me now because it's like it's time for playing.
We have also the dog here.
Okay. Try to see and then I'm going to read them.
Pepe can speak Italian now. We train him properly.
Well, I used because I opened this screen. Okay. So, bruseta. So, remember when you go to the restaurant is not anymore bruschetta.
So, try to be cocky with your friends.
It's going to be bruseta and everyone will look at you like no kiss.
This one is not espresso but espresso but it's espresso espresso panino bologn.
So we have this sound here bologn.
This is something that especially I think in America in English speak country you tend to transform this sound as e no it's like it's not It's not.
Thank you. We will learn I think next time because we almost out of time.
This one it's also my fault because now in England I you I usually say can I get a single maciato with this fake between American accent South African and Italian but it's macato makato this one is not pistachio it's pistakio pistio and here we have double consonant we have The H sound is okay. I'm just waiting that we I'm I'm streaming because I talk but I think if there is like a delay okay I really hope that you enjoyed this class. Obviously, it was my first time doing streaming.
I really hope that you you could have learned something. I will try to review what we have done next time.
Um and try because un there is no way that I can attach this document to you. But again, next Wednesday, 8:00 p.m. UK time. 8:00 p.m.
UK time.
Uh, we will review everything.
Uh, we will do usually usually I I do a reading even though I know that it's strange so it cannot be very easy. uh but we will do a reading to review all these sounds and then I want to do the greetings and then we start. Don't get discouraged with Italian because it's very grammatical based. So grammar is a big chunk of the language but we will learn a bit of grammar, a bit of words and I will try to make also some lesson a bit more uh alternative. Okay, no one has to learn Italian in one day. We have all the time of the world. So remember to subscribe to our channel me vibes. You can watch us online 247.
Um and every Wednesday we will do this class. If I'm not in the condition to do a class because I'm way on traveling or whatever it is, I will let you know. But yes, gra thank you for joining the class in full force. Thank you Jeffrey as well to join. And I hope that you enjoy a bit of Italian.
And remember, just subscribe and learn with me. I think it's going to be amazing.
I wish you a good night and I'm going to eat.
