The video offers a digestible but superficial look at cultural differences that have already been thoroughly documented. It prioritizes the charm of first impressions over any meaningful sociological depth.

【初来日】世界を旅するオーストラリア人が『日本で疑問に感じたこと』とは?[#211]【日英字幕付き】Added:
art around in Osaka even. I was like, "Oh, that's interesting." In Osaka, too.
you from the UK?
>> Yes.
>> Oh, yes. I I didn't mean to even stroke, but I'm a big fan of the British accent, >> so I can hear the accent >> and I'm just wondering. Yeah.
>> Here we are.
>> Which part of UK? and about 2 hours south from London.
>> South from London. I visited in London 2 years ago.
>> Okay.
>> That was beautiful. I love that. I hate London.
>> You hate London? I mean people in the UK, everybody said that you should visit a lot.
>> Yeah.
>> Really like Japan?
>> Oh yeah. The first time.
>> First time.
>> When did you arrive to Japan?
>> Three weeks ago.
>> Three weeks ago.
>> Yeah. We're here for another week.
So in total six weeks isn't the amount of time to enjoy.
>> Yeah. How's it going so far?
>> Very good.
>> What did you do in Japan over the past few weeks?
>> We started off in >> four days.
>> Osaka. I'm from Osaka.
>> Okay.
>> How was Osaka?

I think >> Okay. Okay. Fair enough.
domain.
>> Yeah. So, >> how much going on?
>> Uhhuh.
I'm pretty sure you saw tons of tourists there.
>> Yes.
>> How long are we going to stay in?
>> How many days left?
>> And then up to Canada and then back in Tokyo and spend a week in Tokyo again, >> right? fly back to sorry the UK >> Bangkok >> two nights >> in you mean you're going to have a stopover in >> yes we did a month in Cambodia in November >> wow >> you do love traveling >> we say spending is inheritance >> what does he mean by that sorry I couldn't get that >> so whatever we leave >> we're spending the money instead of leaving it to our son when he die.
>> Yes, we're spending his money.
>> Okay. Now I I got what you mean. That's a good way to spend your money.
>> Yeah.
>> Excuse me.
>> Okay. Show. Yeah. Inheritance. Yeah. I know what you mean now. You're going to leave nothing after.
>> I've been learning English by myself.
Seven.
>> Yours, too?
How long?
>> Seven years. I really love a sense of humor that you can like.
>> They have no sense of humor.
>> I wouldn't judge anyone.
>> This is my Chris.
>> Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.
>> Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.
>> Your hand is so big.
>> Sorry.
>> Your hand is so big.
>> No.
What did you do?
>> What did you was a teacher photography?
>> High school. High school.
>> Okay. So, teacher had to hit to hit the children.
>> I mean now it shouldn't be like that.
You're going to get complain.
>> I'm getting old now.
>> You look really good for your age. I mean, I don't know your age.
>> No. Can you guess his age then?
>> Maybe.
>> Okay. I'm going to be honest with you.
>> Be honest.
>> Embarrassed, you know.
>> 62.
Woo.
>> It's good. It's good.
>> Close.
>> We are 72.
>> 72 and a 21.
>> Now you know to get it right. Wait.
Right.
>> Do you need any help?
>> Do you need any help?
>> No, I was just kind of looking around to see what there is.
>> Yeah. First time here?
>> Yes. Yeah. Is that the same for you or >> I from Osaka? So I come here many times in the past. Yeah.
>> Where you from?
>> Australia.
>> Which part?
>> Uh Newcastle, which is north of Sydney.
>> Newcastle. So I used to live here Sunday.
>> Oh wow.
>> Yeah. That's why I can hear the accent now.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Yeah. I love that. I love that.
>> Yeah. Where did you live? Like in Sydney, that area.
>> Uh do you know transport?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Nice.
>> How long does it take from Newcastle to Sunday?
2 hours by >> driving maybe a little bit longer by train.
>> Okay.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, hopefully soon we're getting a faster train. It's nothing like your um military.
>> I mean, that's too fast. Yeah.
>> Yeah. I would take your train between Yeah. I don't know.
>> Do you have anything you want to try here?
>> I mean, obviously I do want to go like Bamboo Road. Is there anything else you'd recommend doing now?
>> Have you had lunch yet?
>> Yes.
already. Um I know a good restaurant. So if you didn't I can recommend but you already have. So maybe >> did you go to the temple?
>> Sei temple say temple is a good one. The spot to see.
>> I'm waiting for some friends in like they're coming like half an hour 40 minutes.
>> Okay.
>> So I'm like I'm just going to try and do something.
>> Visiting some shrines and a bit of shopping.
I did. I like >> Miffy. Miffy is so famous.
>> I know.
>> For my mom and my sister.
>> Lovely. Lovely. Lovely.
>> I know. I like Miffy. I don't get too much into the um shopping except Mickey.
I kind of like Mickey.
>> Actually, I'm a Japanese blogger and I talk to people randomly like this.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> And make videos. You look so lovely. So, I'm just wondering if we could have a chat for a little bit on the way.
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> So, do you mind if in a video?
>> Yeah, that's okay.
>> Thank you.
>> Bye.
>> How long? What did you say? 45 minutes.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I can just check. Oh, no.
Maybe like 15 20 minutes.
>> 15 20 minutes. She or he? What does she or she doing now?
>> Um I just did a >> Leaving you alone?
>> Uh no, I'm meeting them cuz they were here in Kyoto and I was in Osaka. Um but we met during a ski season in Nco. So then we Yeah. So then we're all traveling Japan at the moment, but we're kind of like doing separate trips just meeting up along the way. So there's about maybe three of them, but my closest friend, she did the stay with me.
>> How many days do you have in total?
>> Three nights.
>> Three nights.
>> Yeah. So I arrived this morning from Osaka. I just got the early train.
>> Oh, okay. Nice. Nice. And how long are you going to stay here in total? I mean here in Japan.
>> Uh well, I've been here already for 4 months.
>> 4 months.
>> Yes.
So I've already done >> I'm here in Kyoto and then I've got um a week in Tokyo. Been traveling for the last few years. So I've lived in Canada.
I lived in France. I chase the winter ski season.
>> I'm jealous of you.
>> Do you have anything you want to try here in Kyoto? I can show you around.
I'm a local Japanese. So >> Oh, really? I I follow you. Anything that you >> Okay. So why don't we visit the shrine that I was mentioning first and then you can have a walk there.
>> Yeah. Okay. That's good.
>> Yeah. So go straight this street.
>> Okay.
>> All right.
>> Sorry, I forgot to mention my name. My name is Toya.
>> Toya. Maya. Nice to meet you.
>> Maya. Nice to meet you.
>> M A Y A. Maya.
>> Correct.
>> Sound like a Japanese name. Maya.
>> Everyone says that. Oh, you got a Japanese name. Do you have any Japanese friends?
>> Well, yes. So, when I worked up in Nco for the winter, um I worked at a spa and I worked as a receptionist, but a lot of the therapists were Japanese or are Japanese >> and they moved up there too to do the season. I think it's a little bit better pay as well. So, they're all from everywhere like >> um Saitama.
Okay.
>> Yeah. Hiroshima Hiroshima >> and Fukuaka.
>> Uhhuh. Yeah. And so Okinawa as well.
>> Wow.
>> So they're from everywhere and they've all come up to the coldest part of Japan.
>> Right.
>> They haven't picked up that much >> Japanese as much as I'd hoped.
>> I reckon that. That's what I recognize that you speak a bit of Japanese but >> not I difficult. Yeah, it's been difficult because in everyone's international >> but I picked up the basics like every day at work >> you would say >> and kanji and that's a whole other >> no call kanji even for Japanese people.
Yeah, I have many kanji that I don't know. So really >> but we can kind of you know guess what it means.
>> Yeah. Yeah. That's how we survive.
>> I mean the fact that you're probably still learning Japanese.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, never ending.
No one is perfect. So >> that's true. Actually, I guess I'm still learning English still. Lots of words I don't know.
>> Especially your language, Australian language, like so many slangs. Um the casual expressions. Ao.
>> Ao. Yeah. This afternoon.
>> Do you really use that expression in a daily conversation?
>> You do. Yeah.
>> You call the service station like the petrol station.
You know, breakfast is breaky.
>> Breakie. Yeah. Have a Christmas.
Chrissy.
>> Chrissy.
>> Is that true?
>> Yes.
>> One of my friends told me, >> but I don't trust him. So, >> no. No. He is right. I mean, I probably wouldn't say it myself all the time.
>> But my parents, everyone would say Chrissy.
>> Yeah.
>> No clue. From outsiders.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. That's >> um you know, avocado. Ao.
>> Ao. Yeah.
>> Very tricky. And avocado.
>> Yeah. Yeah. They are quite a That's true.
>> My a friend made a sentence. I'm going to have this.
>> Yes.
>> What?
>> Oh, wow. This is so pretty.
>> This temple is called >> Yeah.
>> Oh, it's so beautiful. Oh my gosh. Wow.
Oh my gosh. It's so beautiful.
>> Very chill actually. I >> expected many people here but >> no.
>> It's Yeah, it's really quiet.
>> What's the difference between a shrine and a temple? Do you know?
>> That's a good question. Temple is Buddhism and the shrine is Shinto.
>> Oh, Shinto.
>> Shinto. Do you know Shinto?
>> Yes, I have heard of Shinto. I don't know too much about it, but >> Shinto is considered to be the main religion here in Japan. But we don't think it's a religion. just you know the base of Japanese people.
>> Yeah. In Shinto this culture there are so many gods like nature gods. The goats are everywhere in the kitchen in the toilet.
>> Oh wow.
>> So that's why we need to clean up everywhere. Maybe that's one of the reasons why Japan is so clean.
>> We have to be aware of that and we appreciate everything we have.
>> Yeah.
>> That sounds really nice. So sort of a sense of spirituality but not actually religion. Yes, you know, talking about this topic can be cut and sliced in so many different ways, but some people say Shinto is a religion, but I don't think so. As long as you stay in Japan, you exposed to many types of religions. The Buddhism, Shinto, Christianity.
>> Yeah, I saw art around in Osaka even.
>> Okay. I don't know if it was a church, but I saw I saw the cross and >> some graffiti about um God. So, I was like, "Oh, that's interesting."
too.
>> Do you have any religion? Do you follow any religions?
>> No, I'm not I'm not religious. Lots of people are becoming non-religious.
>> Or there's there's still Christianity around or different all of the different religions, but >> primarily I'd say maybe now it's majority non-religion.
>> Every time here I reckon yeah most of Japanese people do not follow um any specific religions >> but varies from person to person. So >> Right. Yeah, >> I could be wrong from, you know, other people's perspectives, but this is what I believe, >> right? Yeah.
>> Make sure you go inside or >> let me check. 9 to430.
Yeah, we can.
>> We have to pay 500 yen. Yeah, we can get admission tickets.
>> Yeah, I don't mind. Do you want to go in or >> Yeah, sure.
>> Yeah. Okay. You don't need to take off your shoes in Australia back home like your home or >> No, no, no. We would never really take off shoes. Like if I go over to a friend's house, I'd keep my shoes on in their house.
>> So that's really new here in Japan. We take off shoes.
>> Yes.
>> Every time. So >> But it makes it makes sense, I think.
Keep it clean.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Exactly.
What was the first reason uh you know went to Canada from Australia?
>> My boyfriend at the time wanted to to do a ski season, so I just joined him.
>> And so it wasn't actually my choice, but I was well I mean it was my choice, but he was the main person >> pushing for it.
>> And then I thought, okay, I'll give this a go. Why not? I love Canada. And my parents did a ski season when they were young and they lived in the same town B that I went to and I just fell in love with skiing. And a ski season is so fun because everyone that goes there wants to make new friends. No one there is too clicky. You know, everyone is there to have the same experience as very very open-minded and also similar interests.
Most people who go want to ski. Um, yeah. I think it's a nice thing to do to make friends quite quickly.
>> Cool.
>> Cuz sometimes when you move to new places like city, it's hard to make friends quickly.
>> 100% I agree with you.
>> Yeah.
>> 100%.
>> People have their own little groups and it's hard to crack into friendship groups.
>> So, I think sometimes going to a place where everyone's new is quite fun. But the sad thing is then you say goodbye. I said bye a couple of weeks ago to really close friends that I made and friendships get um it moves quickly because >> you spend 24 hours a day together >> so it's quite sad but then you've got friends all over the world.
>> So what's your secret for making new friends very easily like uh you know you hit it off right away.
>> Um I >> good connection with people. Yeah, I I think for me I'm quite independent. Like I'm traveling solo right now and I like my own space, but something I had to learn is to say yes to things. If people invite you to go for coffee or even go to a party and maybe a bit tired, try and say yes to things, yes to everything at the start, then people start to recognize your face and recognize that you're at these events.
>> Ignore your tiredness. you just joined them, >> which is so hard cuz sometimes you just want to lie lie in bed and watch a movie by yourself. I I would do that every night sometimes, >> but >> like spending a lovely time together makes you guys more closer like best friends.
>> You really do feel like best friends at the end. Sometimes it's hard because especially I'm not the loudest person in the room and I can be naturally quite reserved and introverted. So it feels like it should be difficult but that's if you just strike up conversations and put yourself out there then people will resonate with you and your the friendliness or whatever it is.
>> Yeah, that's totally understandable.
Sometimes you need to steal the room.
>> Yeah. Which is so hard.
>> Yeah. Cut to the chase. Excuse me.
>> Yeah.
