Traffic Light Called 'Robot' in South Africa #NigeriansInSouthAfrica #CulturalShockAjouté :
Okay, this section it almost killed me.
Especially when you are coming from Nigeria where we grew up with American English. Yes, we were colonized by the British but sometimes our English sounds American more than it sounds British.
So, when I came here, started making friends and the way they talk about cars and roads it was very confusing to me at first until I settled down and understand what every word they were saying means. In Nigeria, you say traffic lights when you see this but here in South Africa, they call it robot. See the shock on my face the first time I found out that this is what they actually mean when they say robot.
Cuz the very first time I heard something like this, my friend was like, "Okay, when you get to that robot, jump off from there." And I'm looking at it and I'm thinking, "Has South Africa been that much advanced that they have robots standing on the roadside just to tell you where to jump off?" But no, robot in South Africa simply means traffic light.
Go figure.
