[00:00:00]Most people think combs are just there to make the chicken look fancy, but actually it's one of the most important parts of their body. A chicken's comb is basically its built-in air conditioner.

[00:00:08]Blood actually flows through the comb to release heat and help cool the bird off during hot summer months. That's why chicken breeds with larger combs handle the heat better because there's more surface area to release the heat. But in cold environments like here in Nebraska, large combs can actually be a bit of a problem because it's more surface area that's prone to frostbite. And believe it or not, a chicken's comb can tell you a lot about a chicken's health. A bright red comb is often the sign of a healthy laying hen. Whereas a pale comb can sometimes be a sign that a chicken is under some stress, they've got parasites, an illness, or they're just not actively laying. The reason roosters have larger combs is because they have more testosterone. And not all chickens' combs look the same, either. Chickens can have single combs, rose combs, pea combs, walnut combs, and even cushion combs. Basically like having different hairstyles, but for chickens.
