19 First Alert Day: Severe storms possible this evening

[00:00:30]Good afternoon. I'm Dan DeRose with 19 News. Take a live look outside. 83 warm degrees in Northeast Ohio. Lots of sunshine.

[00:00:39]But that's what could be the potential for some storms. That's why today is a First Alert Weather Day. All that heat out there, like our weather people like to say, or meteorologists like Erica Page, that is just fuel for what could be storms later today. Erica, walk us through it.

[00:00:55]Yeah, so we've had a decent bit of cloud cover through the morning. So that's kind of helped to hold temperatures a little bit cooler for part of the day.

[00:01:02]We'll see how much more heat we can build in here, but again, temperatures have already been able to warm over the last couple of hours back into the lower to mid 80s. So it's still not off the table that we see a few upper 80s on the board as this next cold front starts to roll in. A few of us may have gotten an alert on our phones saying, "Hey, we got a severe thunderstorm watch that's out until 7:00." Granted, this does not include the majority of Northeast Ohio, but I would not be surprised, say, as time goes on, if we do eventually see that expanded, provided we see some decent shower and thunderstorm activity.

[00:01:33]Right now, most of this is sparking out across parts of Michigan. So we'd like to see a little bit more of this get going, especially across Eastern Indiana and Northwestern Ohio, but we still have a few hours before we really expect some of the worst weather to kind of work make its way into our area. As a result of that, we certainly do have a risk for severe storms. A few could be on the strong to severe side. Again, our main concerns would be the damaging wind gusts. We're talking winds gusting upwards of 60 mph and keep in mind when you have such hot humid temperatures and you get some of that rain that moves through, it's really easy to get the gusty winds. It's kind of that primary concern. And if you can get some more isolated storms to to develop, we can't rule out a hail threat and isolated tornado risk as well, but I think those are going to be a little bit lower on the scale just given kind of where our temperatures are at at least as of right now. Let's walk you through your future view to kind of give you an idea how the rest of today plays out. Again, I think we're still quiet for at least the next couple of hours, but just expect that as we get later and later into this afternoon and evening, we kind of have that better opportunity of seeing some scattered showers, a few thunderstorms.

[00:02:36]Again, some of these could be on the strong to severe side. That's not saying every single storm will be, but it is something that we will watch certainly as we head into the rest of tonight. And then once that cold front clears, your temperature is going to start dropping into the 50s by the time we wake up early tomorrow morning and you still may have some remnant moisture on the backside of this system, which helps to secure at least a few showers for the first part of the day tomorrow before we really just kind of are talking about a little bit of a cooler reset to this temperature pattern here as we approach the middle and end of this week. Yeah, again, it'll be an up and down week for sure. Near 90. Did we hit 90 yesterday?

[00:03:13]We did not. We hit 88 officially in Cleveland. So, a couple of degrees shy of that. Shy of the record. We're going to take a quick break and look at the rest of the week including a very very busy upcoming holiday weekend. We'll be right back.

[00:04:27]>> And welcome back. Another live look at what 83 warm degrees looks like all throughout Northeast Ohio. We're going to bring Erica I'm sorry, Erica Paige back in for a final look at our 7-day forecast including our holiday weekend. Yeah, so it's going to be a little bit of a reset to that temperature, especially from what we're experiencing today and what we had in place yesterday and even over the weekend. So highs tomorrow, I think at best are only into the middle 50s.

[00:04:53]Again, you're going to have a lot of cloud cover around the rain showers in the morning, and that's probably going to limit how much that temperature can really rebound during the afternoon.

[00:05:00]You're also going to have a stronger north wind in place, and that's going to kind of be the case into Thursday as well. Though I think Thursday's kind of the nice day that we get in between storm systems. So you do have a little bit more sunshine in place. Temperatures be cool, but we're back into the mid-60s, and we're slowly climbing our way back into the lower to mid-70s as we approach Memorial Day weekend. That said, I do think there's going to be a lot of rain and even some storm chances here as we go through the holiday weekend. Friday doesn't necessarily start off rainy, but the more you get through the afternoon and especially into the evening, the more you're going to see this next area of low pressure swinging through. It gives us widespread rain and rumbles as we get through the day on Saturday.

[00:05:39]And then we'll still have that system sort of lingering across our area into Sunday. So coverage-wise, I still think we're going to be dealing with some pretty wet weather through the day. It may not last all day long, but I would definitely have some backup plans in case you're kind of just dealing with the rain. I think for a good majority of the day. Then things become a bit more scattered here as we get into Memorial Day as well as into Tuesday. We've got some boundaries nearby, so you will have opportunities for showers and storms. It just may not necessarily be for the entire area. So we'll have to watch that a little bit closer certainly as we look to wrap up the holiday weekend. Uh cross your fingers things improve.
