My name is Angelo Majok. I'm a clinical officer and I've been advised a degree in business administration in hospital and health system management.
And a third-year student of public and environmental health in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.
Today we are going to to to to know what is malaria and what are the causes and how are we going to prevent malaria because we are now heading to malaria season.
So, the question is what is malaria?
Definition of malaria. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium which are transmitted to human through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
It is characterized by symptoms such as fever, chills, sweating, fatigue, headache, and nausea.
This bring us to the question, what causes malaria?
So, the causes of malaria, malaria is caused primarily by five species of Plasmodium parasite.
And one is Plasmodium falciparum which is the most severe malaria.
And it is one that affect many people in South Sudan here.
And we have Plasmodium vivax, we have Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi.
And infection occurs when Anopheles mosquito mosquito, sorry, bite an infected person and then bite another person transferring the parasite.
Coming to the prevalence of a malaria in South Sudan and global Malaria is highly endemic in South Sudan.
Meaning it is mostly present in this country.
It's one of the top a health challenge in the country.
Factors contributing to this prevalence include favorable climate condition for mosquito breeding.
Uh South Sudan is very hot and very humid in the rainy season.
And then the other thing is limited access to diagnostic testing and effective treatment.
Insecurity and displacement affecting health service delivery.
How do we prevent malaria?
Preventive measures against malaria include insecticide bed net is used to prevent mosquito bite during sleeping.
And indoor residual spray, we call it IRS.
We spraying insecticide on the wall and surface to kill mosquitoes.
