The 254-pound empty weight limit for Part 103 ultralight aircraft creates fundamental design trade-offs, forcing engineers to prioritize weight reduction over durability, comfort, or reliability, which explains why powered paraglider trikes and powered parachutes exhibit significantly different flight characteristics and operational capabilities.

The 254 Pound Problem追加:
If a powered paraglider trike wants to qualify as a legal part 103 ultralight, it has to weigh less than 254 lb empty.
That single rule changes everything.
Smaller engines, lighter tubing, [music] less suspension, minimal structure. And engineers can absolutely build lightweight aircraft, but there's always a trade-off. You can optimize for weight, or durability, or comfort, [music] or reliability, but usually not all of them at once. That's one reason powered paraglider trikes and powered parachutes fly so differently. The full video is on my channel.
