According to Nisargadatta Maharaj's teachings in Advaita Vedanta, the mind creates suffering through mistaken identification with thoughts, emotions, and the ego; true freedom comes from recognizing that you are not the mind but the timeless awareness (pure consciousness) in which thoughts appear and disappear, like clouds passing through the sky. The ego's need for validation, identity, and future fulfillment perpetuates suffering, while enlightenment is not destroying the mind but seeing through its illusion—realizing that what comes and goes (thoughts, emotions, body, memories) cannot be you, and that the true self is the unchanging presence that knows everything is happening.

How To Break Free From Mental Illusions And Attain Absolute Freedom -Nisargadatta MaharajAñadido:
The mind, an invisible [music] prison that humans don't realize.
There's a strange paradox in human life.
A person can travel the world, understand science, philosophy, [music] history, technology, even study the vast universe, yet never understand how their own mind operates.
Humans believe they are living freely.
But from Nisargadatta [music] Maharaj's perspective, most of humanity is merely reacting like biological machines by memory, conditioning, [music] and fear.
Observe deeply.
When someone praises you, the mind immediately creates a feeling of joy.
When someone insults you, the mind creates hurt.
When you [music] lose money, the mind creates anxiety.
When you receive attention, the mind [music] feels valued.
So, who is living your life?
Pure awareness [music] or programmed responses?
The frightening thing is that most people never realize they are being controlled by a relentless stream of thoughts. [music] The mind is like a radio that never turns off.
It talks from morning till night.
It comments on everything.
It judges.
It reminisces about the past.
It imagines the future.
It compares.
It worries.
It regrets. [music] It tells endless stories about me.
And then one day, people begin to believe that voice is themselves.
[music] This is the fundamental illusion.
According to the Advaita Vedanta philosophy, suffering [music] doesn't arise because of life.
Suffering arises because of mistaken [music] identification.
You don't suffer because thoughts arise.
You suffer [music] because you believe thoughts are me.
Look at the sky.
Clouds drift across [music] the sky, but the sky is unaffected by the clouds.
Thoughts are the same. [music] They appear and disappear in your consciousness.
But people cling to each cloud of their mind and say, "I am worried. [music] I have failed.
I am worthless.
I am hurt."
No.
These are merely [music] temporary movements in the mind.
The profound point that Nisargadatta Maharaj constantly emphasizes [music] is you are the knowledge of thought, not the thought itself. [music] This is not a philosophical concept to ponder for amusement.
This is the gateway to absolute freedom.
Because the moment you clearly see that you are not the mind, the power of the mind begins to crumble. [music] Modern man is addicted to thinking without realizing it.
>> [music] >> They fear silence.
They fear being alone.
They fear lack of stimulation. [music] Why?
Because when the external noise is gone, they [music] are forced to confront the internal chaos.
Many people think suffering comes from the world.
But in reality, most suffering stems from psychological resistance to what is.
An event [music] happens in just a few seconds, but the mind can prolong it into suffering for years.
An insult lasts only a few moments, >> [music] >> but the ego stores it as a personal wound.
Do you [music] see?
The mind lives on memories.
If you take away memories, the self you call I will begin to dissolve.
Try asking yourself, if there were no name, no past, no occupation, no personal story, who are you?
This is the question that shakes the entire structure of the ego, and it is also [music] the gateway to enlightenment.
One of the most subtle things [music] the mind does is make you believe that happiness lies in the future.
If I achieve that, [music] I will be happy.
If the other person loves me, I will be whole.
If I attain enlightenment, I will be [music] at peace.
But the future is just a thought that arises in the present.
The mind is always fleeing from this moment because [music] the ego cannot exist in pure presence.
The ego needs time to exist. [music] It needs the past to tell a story.
It needs [music] the future to hope or fear.
But pure awareness needs [music] no time.
It is always here.
Right now.
Right before you name anything.
Right before the mind interprets the world.
There is a silent presence reading these lines.
That presence does [music] not age.
Does not grow.
Does [music] not come into being.
Does not bear an identity.
It's simply yes.
According to Nisargadatta Maharaj, this [music] primordial state of I am is the first gateway to returning to one's true self.
Not I am someone [music] else.
Just I am.
No added concepts.
Because the moment you add definition, the ego [music] returns.
The strange thing is that people try to change the external world without ever understanding the mechanism that creates the internal experience. [music] You can possess many things, but if your mind is still chaotic, you will still suffer.
Conversely, someone who [music] has seen through the illusion of the ego can live simply yet be freer than millions of wealthy [music] people.
This is something the modern world finds very difficult to understand because modern civilization [music] is built on reinforcing the ego.
Be special.
Be outstanding. [music] Be better than others.
Build a perfect image.
Make people acknowledge you.
But according to enlightened wisdom, the very need to be someone is the [music] source of insecurity.
An ego that constantly needs validation will never be at peace.
>> [music] >> It's like a bottomless pit.
The more you pour in, the more you're left [music] with nothing.
That's why many people achieve success but remain empty because what [music] they are seeking, the fulfillment, is an illusion.
The mind is not the enemy.
The biggest [music] mistake is fighting the mind.
When you fight thoughts, you inadvertently give them more energy.
Enlightenment is not destroying the mind.
It is seeing through it.
Like when you watch a movie and suddenly remember that it's just [music] a screen.
The movie continues, but you are no longer trapped.
That is [music] the beginning of freedom.
The false eye, the root of all suffering.
From a young age, people are taught to become someone. [music] You are given a name.
You are taught your gender.
You are told [music] to succeed, to be obedient, to be recognized, to have value in the eyes of society.
[music] Layers of identity are placed on pure consciousness like masks.
And gradually, you forget your original self. [music] According to Advaita Vedanta, the self that humans protect their whole lives is actually just [music] a psychological construct made up of memories, emotions, and identifications. [music] It has no fixed entity.
It's like a character in a dream.
>> [music] >> But strangely, humanity has built entire civilizations around protecting that imaginary character.
Observe carefully all human conflicts.
Why are people angry?
Because [music] the self is offended.
Why are people jealous?
Because the [music] self feels inferior.
Why are people afraid?
Because [music] the self fears disappearing.
The ego exists through division. [music] It needs me and others, success [music] and failure, high and low, more and less, gain and loss.
But pure awareness doesn't divide like [music] that.
It's like sunlight shining on everything without judgment.
>> [music] >> One of the most dangerous illusions is, "I must correct [music] myself to become worthy."
This statement sounds positive, [music] but beneath it lies profound self-denial.
The ego always makes you feel inadequate, not good enough, [music] not awakened enough, not beautiful enough, not successful [music] enough, not sacred enough.
And then it [music] sells you an imagined future where you will be perfect.
But look deeper.
Who is the one who wants to be perfect?
[music] The ego itself.
This is the subtle [music] paradox of the spiritual path.
Many people enter meditation, yoga, [music] healing, energy practices, but in reality, they are only decorating the ego with spiritual language.
They turn enlightenment into a new identity. [music] Look at me, I am very awake.
I have high energy.
I vibrate on a higher dimension.
But according to Nisargadatta Maharaj, as long as there is a person who wants to become enlightened, the ego will continue to exist.
Enlightenment doesn't make the ego any more special.
Enlightenment sees that the ego never truly existed.
That's why [music] this truth is terrifying to the ego because the ego doesn't want freedom.
It wants [music] to exist forever.
It's even willing to turn suffering into personal identity. [music] Many people cling to old wounds because if they let go, they no longer know who they are.
They recount their painful stories over and over again as a way of affirming their own existence.
This is the deepest [music] prison, not a physical prison, but a prison of psychological identity.
Nisargadatta Maharaj once pointed out something incredibly powerful.
What comes and goes cannot be you.
[music] Contemplate this statement deeply.
Emotions [music] come and go.
Thoughts come and go.
The body [music] changes every day.
Beliefs change.
Memories [music] change.
But one thing has never changed from childhood to the present.
The presence that knows everything is happening.
That is the true essence.
No form. [music] No identity.
No birth or death.
And the greatest [music] paradox is what you seek your whole life is the one reading these lines right now.

And the greatest [music] paradox is what you seek your whole life is the one reading these lines right now.
Another extremely [music] profound practice is observing the observer.
This is where the mind's logic begins [music] to crumble.
Initially, you observe the thought.
Then you ask, "Who is observing [music] the thought?"
You try to find the observer.
But then you discover there is no fixed [music] person there.
Only pure awareness.
No [music] form.
No name.
No personal center.
This is a crucial moment on the journey to awakening because you begin [music] to see that the self is just a repeating concept.
It is not a real entity.
As you practice [music] more deeply, you will begin to experience the gaps between thoughts.
At first, they are very short.
Just a few seconds of silence.
But it is in those gaps that you begin [music] to taste freedom.
A kind of peace that is independent of circumstances.
Not emotional joy.
Not psychological exhilaration.
But unconditional stillness. [music] Namaste.
