Period poverty refers to the inability to afford menstrual products, which is a global issue affecting women's education and health; menstrual products should be treated as essential goods rather than luxury items because menstruation is a natural biological process that women cannot avoid, and pricing them as luxury goods creates classism that excludes those who cannot afford basic hygiene products.

25,000 Naira For Sanitary Pads & We’re Supposed To Be Okay With This Period Poverty Is RealAdded:
Why are you guys luxury fine something that we as women are saying it should be free.
Okay, from the west to the east to everywhere in this world it should be free because guess what if men could menstruate it would be free. 25,000 naira for sanitary pad.
25,000 naira for sanitary pad, why?
Why?
People are dragging message on saying and saying why are you putting that kind of price? Why is there classism when it comes to buying pads? Why do we have to say oh this one is for the rich people, this one is for people that can't afford it. If you cannot afford it, bye-bye.
For pad, for menstruation that we do compulsory almost all all women are menstruating compulsory every month.
And then you're coming to sell to us pad for 25,000 naira.
Let me show you guys something. Hi guys, join me as I unbox my girls target [music] kit. Now this is Nigeria's number one period care kit for girls from 9 [music] years upward. Let's go.
Yes, it's [music] open.
And then you first of all are greeted [music] with a book written by me. It's a book about period puberty, that's what it's called. It teaches girls how to take care of themselves, what puberty is like. Plus it's not just for girls, it's for boys also.
And then in the girls target box I have oh lots and lots of stuff. But I'll first [music] go with the plant based wipes.
Safe for flushing, once you finish using [music] it it fragments into tiny bits.
Extremely nice and safe to clean you know your intimate. Yeah. [music] And then in the box we have like different variants of the girls talk products. We have um the menstrual pants, one of my favorites. Um you can sleep with it overnight, you know, come out all clean and dry. It's extremely nice. You should try this one. It also has like different variants of the girls talk sanitary pads. It has the super pack.
It has the regular pack.
It has [music] the super plus pack. It means that mom can share with her girls the entire girls in a particular family.
Can buy one box, fits all. [music] Yes.
And then it comes with one of my favorite products from the girls talk company, which is the sanitary pad um liner. This one comes with wings. You know, I hardly get panty liners that come with wings. That is why [music] I love this one. Stays put, no shifting, no stress. And then it comes with a trash bag. After your period you have like trash bags to put in your used pads and then trashed. [music] Safe trashing. Plus, for girls in school, you also have this purse >> [music] >> where when you're going to school you can put your wipes, your sanitary pad, and your panty liner in your school bag and it just looks cute and nice.
>> [music] >> Nigerians are angry. People are very angry. Women are angry. But the thing is some people are like what is your problem? If you cannot afford it, then buy the ones you can afford. She's coming to do business. She needs to make money. She needs to feed her family. So, if people say you cannot afford it, if you know that you cannot afford expensive pad, go and buy the cheap ones that you can afford. Why are you coming to her and feel like, "Oh, she should reduce it for what?"
While some people are like, "You should not even encourage things like this as a as a mother, because she's a mother as well, and you have girls. You should not encourage things like this and be selling pads this expensive.
You don't have to sell pads this expensive because we we don't have a choice. Menstruation, we don't have a choice.
Let me show you guys some reaction video and I'll share my thoughts at the end of the videos. So, I saw videos of people dragging Mercy Johnson for selling her pad 20K. And mind you, she's not selling a single pad for that 20K. She's selling a kit. A kit a kit like a box.
>> [snorts] >> A pad kit that comes with so many things inside for 20K. Like it's a whole kit. And at the end of the day, this is business, not charity organization.
Business are created to make profit.
Pad companies are private companies, not government agencies giving out free products. If the price is too expensive for you, that is understandable, but then buy from another brand that fits your budget. Not every product is meant for everybody.
And that is okay. Some women buy expensive bags, expensive shoes.
So, why even wigs are expensive?
Expensive wigs. So, why are people so angry that somebody created a minimum period kits?
So, because you have been watching Mercy Johnson for since you were a kid. So, if she Okay, this her business that she started, she should just like give you people the pad free. Like I don't understand. And yes, I understand some women can't afford sanitary pads. And that is real issue. But blaming one business owner for pricing her own product is not going to solve the period poverty. Like you people should have sense now. So, you people want Mercy Johnson to give you guys the pad free.
You want it You want her to share the pad free for you guys. Forgetting that this is her personal business.
She's not the government.
She's trying to survive like you people.
Like she's making money to feed her family.
Like you tell me period is bad um business.
bless um Mrs. Johnson I don't know Joe.
Okay, say that some of us me I can't even buy period product 25,000 a month.
Forget some of us. So, there is something called market research, right?
And I believe that if you do a proper market research you will understand that you have no business in that some women are not your target [music] audience in some kind of businesses. And some of these businesses are businesses like period products.
[music] Yes.
How dare you people say that not all women should be a brand's target audience when [music] the period product they sell is very very high like almost 50,000 Naira. Are you guys serious?
Are you guys really serious? In a country where the only thing that tops period poverty is insecurity. The only thing that tops period poverty in Nigeria right now is insecurity. Do you know how many girls cannot go to school?
Okay, say that some of us me I can't even buy period product 25,000 a month.
Forget some of us. Say that some of you because you guys are the Beyoncés out there. Say that some of you can buy period product 25,000 a month for how many pads?
We are here clamoring and shouting that period products should be free.
Period products should be free because menstruation is a very natural like very natural. I don't have a choice. Same as every other woman out there. They don't have a choice. We are clamoring and shouting that period products should be free. But you guys are out there saying that some people are not some people's target audience. How dare you say that?
How if you're selling pads or any menstrual products every freaking woman should be your target audience. If you know that every woman cannot be your target audience then you stick to another business. Yes.
Period products GENERALLY BE YOU PAD, BE YOU TAMPON, be you this, be you that SHOULD NOT EVEN DARE BE AN BE ANY AESTHETIC aesthetically pleasing business. Are you guys serious?
Now, we are here with a shout struggling that menstruation should even be accepted as a normal way of life. That's another problem. But still shouting to everybody that okay, wait. You people self calm down. If everybody starts to buy that 30,000 pad, who is going to give you pad in public?
Who is going to give you pad in public when your period starts suddenly? I mean she going to buy the one or the other one.
Mom, pad me. I cannot give you. And many people would not because it's pricey.
How many do you want to buy in a month for people who usually have very heavy flow? How many? We're still complaining that tampon is like 7,000 6,000 8,000.
It's very pricey.
We're still looking for ways to cut it down. Even that thing that is very normal, like very very okay and normal.
For a period product, five pads. Because I don't understand the level of classism and all of this nonsense that's been happening in Nigeria. We just want to see everything like it is normal. It is normal. It is normal. Eh, Beyonce. Leo.
Le. The foundation I work with, right?
From our surveys, we like we did see all these things like a lot of girls are suffering from period poverty. And even some of us that can buy normal period products or tampons, we still complain because they are pricey. We are begging that period products should be should be like free.
You people are bringing up that some people are not a target audience for 30,000 period blood pads. No. Okay now.
You people should keep it moving. Yes.
Keep it moving. It's very okay. I mean, at the end of the day, some of us don't have money. But we keep clamoring that period products should be free and not be turned into an aesthetically pleasing business. No. Are you people that are saying that oh, I'm a Beyonce. When I have the money, I'm going to buy a quadro and rest of the matter. Well done. Okay. Well done. Keep it I don't like keep it moving. Well done. Good job. Good business. Well done. Guys, I saw it Regina Daniels being announced as the new um ambassador or the ambassador. I was shocked cuz I thought why I saw the caption as well and I said, "Why are you guys luxury-fying something that we as women are saying it should be free?"
Okay, from the west to the east to everywhere in this world, it should be free.
Because guess what? If men could menstruate, it would be free.
And do you know why this is bad? Because it's not just Mercy Johnson's brand.
Now, other brands that people are barely affording will not feel like they need to keep up.
Don't you understand? See how everything has become luxury. Even your nearby tailor. Even your your your your tailor that that that carries us and boom boom boom boom when he's around the street, he's already claiming luxury, too.
You guys, they've used the word luxury to impoverish people in Nigeria and you you're watching them do it to pad pad pad. In my company here, they are pads in the toilet, even though it's not the best, but they are there in the toilet for you to pick up with pick up and use to help with period poverty.
In Nigeria, this thing Mercy Johnson has just done will increase the price of pad. Like it or not, cuz other people will feel like they need to, you know, compete. They will feel like they need to stay relevant in the market. I remember Dry Love. I just saw somebody Oh, Dry Love with that minty freshness.
Dry Love, when it came out, I remember when we were in the market, they were hawking it for 100 naira, 150.
100 naira and 150. It was long as [ __ ] I was like, never seen a pad like this, never.
Always did not work it on my body. Even though always was the first um period pad that came to my school to give out uh pads. After a while, I think the chemicals or whatever, my body was reacting to it. So, I didn't use it. But then, pad was 140 Lady Care 150. I went home the other day, 1,000 plus.
And you need to remember your minimum wage is still 70-something, 90-something per month.
But see, when you get four PK, wahala oh. Four girls, wahala.
You guys, I I just feel like Nigerians, people are telling you your mother is serious. You are laughing. You are laughing. You are laughing. You are defending the rich. Rich people don't care about you. You can like an actress and still feel like, you know, this thing doesn't make sense and it's okay to criticize people. Do it like give them feedback. Just give them feedback and say this doesn't really make sense.
If anything, you should be championing the need for period pads to be more accessible, more like, you know, cheaper. Not that you are now being the one superseding the market to make it more expensive. Even if we are not our our target demographic, it doesn't mean that the other poor people, the other um what's the name? Sorry, I said poor people. The other smaller brands, the other brands that are, you know, affordable now will not try to compete with her. And some of you are supporting this because you want classism to enter the period market as well. You want to be able to say, "Oh, this is what I use for my period."
Blood waste now, blood waste. Do you understand? Whether it's falling on a diamond pad or falling on a cotton pad, same.
Menstruation is menstruation. Do you understand? You don't get to be classist. That 20,000 that you want to use to buy one one period package for one month, why don't you share it for other people?
Like buy pad and actually share it for other people or just give them the money to go and buy the pad and you you you buy your own for 1,000 too or you buy your own too.
With that 20,000 you want to use and go and buy pad for one you, you can use it to buy pad for five other people. And this is why I say that a lot of you want power just so you can do the exact same thing men are doing to women.
A lot of you you want the positions of power just so you can be the one punishing women. You guys used to [ __ ] up sometimes. They say come out, they say pad 25,000 naira in a decrease.
Why are you all running mad over the issue?
Go for the one you can afford, right? Go for the one you can have. There are some people that is in this same country that we are in. If they've not buy something that is expensive, they cannot rest.
They believe that the one that is cheap is the one that Sorry, the one that is expensive is the one with good quality.
The cheap one is the one that has bad quality. Let me use this as an example. I'm using my son this time around. I've been at my brother's place, right? My senior brother's place. So, I saw I I started my period and I don't know anywhere yet, right? So, I was just like I saw it. I saw this pad, though, like much in the room. Can I use this for his girlfriend now? He said I can use it. I took it and I started using it. Lo and behold, this pad gave me rashes.
Mind you, this pad is is expensive. I I used to see it, but it's not a pad that you can just buy anywhere. People just sell it online, like inside carton. Like it's a Like the the package is carton.
I'm not going to mention the name.
I used this pad. This pad gave me rashes. I don't know, maybe it's like that for any other person, but for me it gave me rashes.
That is to say, next time, do you think I will go there and go and take that pad? Lie, lie, I will never use it. I will stick to my 1,000 say I don't know how much they're selling in that car. It's been long I bought cuz I bought in bulk in my house.
It's been long I bought that pad that looked like Viron. It's inside a bag like this. But it's not Viron. It's the second one. It's that one that I used to use. And that one is just perfect for me. That has pant liner inside. It's perfect for me. So, go for what you know is okay for you. There are some people is that 25K gongo go that they want.
They will even buy bulk at home. Why?
They have the money. And why? It's okay for them. They love it. So, why are you guys drinking paracetamol over another person's headache?
When she brought the pad 25K, did she write your name on it? Why you on I don't even understand. Why are you stressing?
Why are you stressing?
If you to use the opportunity to make money, you no no go make am.
And why do you feel like they give a [ __ ] about who is suffering and who does not have the money to afford this? They don't give a [ __ ] about it. All they They [clears throat] are interested in is how to make their money. And I'm very sure that you too you What you are you will be interested in is also to make your money.
Say another person sell pad of 1,000 something, doesn't mean them too they have to sell the same thing.
And why are you all stressing? There are some people that is what they want, the expensive one.
The cheap one they feel like the cheap one is is is not is not quality enough.
Let them go for what they can afford.
She cannot. Like me now, it is I will go back to that black pad? No.
I will stick with my 1,000. I don't know how much they are selling that pad now, 1,700 or 1,800. I will stick to it because that has been good for me. Now I'm now eating a Vaseline every day for because of rashes. And that rashes now I'm very sure that before I leave it I've been eating it. It will give me black spot.
You see that it has caused one stupid thing. If I did have stick to just my one product, you know this thing will not happen to me. So just why are you stressing over another person's headache?
Hey.
Huh. God I beg.
Growing up, I remember that always we come to our school, my secondary school, and share free pads and give these small pamphlets, these books that say everything about periods, when you should start, what you should do, how many pads you should use per day, how you should take care of yourself during your period. They would do that. Like before I started my period, I already had pads at home.
That's how good they were.
And I think this was a template that Mrs. Johnson could have followed for our for our business roll out. So I'm angry at Mrs. Johnson that she's selling a period care package at such a ridiculous price, and I think 20K or 25K. So I went to check the period care package and realized that it had menstrual pad, pads of different sizes, even a little book in it, and I don't know what she had in it, wipes, disposable mini disposable sacks I can use to, you know, throw away a pad and even pads to pack all these things.
Panty liners with wings, like those are very very, you know, very smart innovations, I'm not even going to lie. But, the issue is the rollout, like I said, because imagine actually going to schools, educating young girls about period, what they should expect, what they should not expect, what they can do, how to take care of themselves, actually giving these books out free in these schools, making videos on this, and also giving some pads free. I think that would change the conversation. It would take the conversation to a different direction entirely, because people watching this see the good work you're doing. That's investment.
You know, because to be honest, innovation is nice. It's very nice. It's very nice, very nice, but, you know, pad is not even a luxury item. It's a necessity. And we already live in a country where the average girl cannot afford pads. The average girl on the street cannot afford even the simplest pad, and they have to use clothes, cotton wool, and very unhygienic things.
But, at the same time, we cannot decide how somebody decides to run their life and what kind of business they decide to put out there.
If you know what I'm trying to say. What she could have done is that education and some free pads thing.
And also, maybe create a pad only version, that one that's not any not necessarily a period care kit, a pad only version so that other girls other children other women that cannot afford the period care kits can also feel included.
That way, Nigerian girls feel seen and heard, and no doesn't become a classist thing.
And she also wins. The brand wins. Our business wins. Everybody's happy, I think. I think that would have been a smarter thing to do. What do you guys think?
There was a time a celebrity came to talk about why he was asking a Nigerian celebrity. She was saying that, "Why is it that Nigerians do not patronize Nigerian-based celebrity products?" Or if they are if they open a store or they are selling clothes, they're selling these, they're selling that, Nigerians do not patronize them. But, when it's outside, let's say Rihanna, Beyoncé, and they have a product, you'll see their country people patronizing them, reviewing their product, and all of that. But, when it comes to be Nigerian, we don't know we don't know if we'll patronize celebrities, oh. We don't patronize And it's true. You think that everybody was like, "Yes, why should we patronize you people? When you When you want to sell something, you will put it high price.
Something that a normal person that is your fan, some somebody that really love you so dearly, cannot afford it.
For them to even support you, they cannot afford it.
You people, when you want to sell something, you'll be selling it to only your your your fellow friends. Your fellow friends and colleagues. You will not even remember that you're supposed to sell it for your fans. You don't remember your fans are supposed to afford it that You don't even think about people that are outside. You only think about the I I people, the people that, you know, That is why Nigerians don't don't even patronize Nigerian celebrity brand. They don't bring out No matter what they bring out, they don't sell.
Most of the time, they don't sell.
They'll just sell to their fellow friends. And when you When they give a lot of people PR and all of that, the only people that just PR. That is the only way you will be able to know, "Okay, this is a This person has this product." I cannot go to a celebrity um boutique or say I want to go and buy clothes. I won't I won't.
I won't patronize you because your clothes are extremely expensive.
Your bags are extremely expensive.
You're not even thinking about your fellow Nigerians.
An average girl cannot afford pad in this country.
Things are very expensive.
Did Daily life is even expensive. Don't even talk about food is expensive. Now, pad that's supposed to be free.
Because we don't have a choice when we're menstruating. We we don't have a choice. For the women that were saying that uh some people can buy expensive bag or when it comes to pad, you cannot buy pad.
We don't have a choice for this pad.
When it comes to the bag, we have choice. I can decide if I want to carry a bag or not. If I don't carry a bag, you cannot beat me.
But if I want to use pad, I I I cannot say I don't want to use pad. I'm going to stain everywhere. I'm going to be Everything's going to be messy. I'm going to be very uncomfortable. I have to use a sanitary pad every month unless unless I'm pregnant.
I have to use a sanitary pad every month. I don't have a choice even when I don't want to. I will still do it.
You cannot compare essential and non-essential things. You can't do that.
So saying that oh some some people can afford bag or some people can buy designer this but they cannot buy Why am I buying designer pad? Why Why am I buying designer pad? Why is there a designer pad? Why is there a pad for rich people and pad for poor people?
And it's very annoying because it's coming from a woman. If it was even a man that opened this business now, we will say mhm see them.
But the fact that it's coming from a woman and she she's a mother and she has daughters as well, it's crazy. It's annoying.
Nobody say you should not make your money. Nobody say you should not But this is this is like the most expensive pad right now in Nigeria, 25,000 naira.
This is like the most expensive. Tampons are expensive. Other pads are very affordable. Just like one of the creators saying dry love. Yeah, those pads are very affordable. In fact, they will even give you for free. In fact, they will If you buy in bulk, it's cheaper and all of that.
>> [gasps and sighs] >> Even if some of us can afford it, we are not going to patronize you.
