This video demonstrates how musical harmony works through the analysis of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Proud Mary' by Missioned Souls, a Filipino family band. The instructor explains that on the word 'rolling,' the three-part harmony consists of F sharp (the third of the D chord), A (the fifth), and D (the root), creating a complete chord voicing. The video also covers guitar techniques including the riff pattern (B-D-E-G), chord transitions, and the use of delay effects to sustain notes, while explaining how musicians branch outside the main key (D major) to create surprising musical moments through chord modulations to C, A, G, and F.

Singer-Songwriter REACTS: Missioned Souls - Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival)Hinzugefügt:
Welcome. [music and singing] Today, we're going to react to another Mission Soul cover, and as my background music might suggest, [music] [singing] it's going to be Proud Mary.
Welcome, guys. My name is Fana. I'm a guitarist, singer, songwriter, as well as music teacher. As I already mentioned, we're going to check out Mission Soul's version of Proud Mary.
So, let's dive straight in.
>> [music] [music] >> So, the dad is playing bass now.
>> [music] >> I'm looking forward to the solo, the guitar solo. Oh, there you go. There she goes.
>> [music] >> Okay, now the mom.
Come on, let's do that.
>> [music] [music] [music] [singing] >> Okay, as usually with Mission Soul's, the way they nail the cover so close to the original is impressive. And sometimes with covers, this can be a little bit of a downside because when you're doing a cover, you want to contribute something new to the song.
But, the newness in their case is that it's a family band from Philippines. The way they looked at their ages, like all of that is the new thing, the freshness, not old dudes with guitars, white dudes with guitars, you know, from America. Are they American, by the way, Creedence Clearwater Revival? I think so, right? Let me just double-check that. From California, okay. So, let's break down the vocal harmonies here. On the word rolling, we have a pretty distinct three-part harmony. We're on a D chord, and the main [music] melody is on this note.
Rolling, [singing] which is [music] F sharp, that's the third in the chord.
Then, above that, we have the note rolling, which is A, that's the fifth. So, rolling, [singing] >> [music] >> rolling, rolling. The third one is the root, the D.
Rolling, [music] rolling, rolling.
And that's the harmony they're singing there. I liked how they swapped for the verses, that the second verse was sung by the mother.
And it's also worth pointing out the riff.
>> [music] >> So, she goes B, D, E, and then this fourth.
It's ninth fret on the A and D string, slides down to the seventh, >> [music] >> and then finishes on the root and the third. That's similar to the harmonies we had, so D and F sharp.
Also, the clean response with the guitar here.
Again, played with thirds, da da da da da. We have the notes >> [music] >> rolling [singing] on the river.
>> [music] [music] >> Ha, ha, she curses her hands as well.
Just a little bit of a show.
Nice and country.
This part is tricky rhythmically.
Nice and simple. Nailed it.
>> [music] [singing] >> So, for the beginning of the solo, you have basically just this shape of D, still D.
>> [music] >> Just played here on the seventh fret, and then you add these two notes.
>> [music] >> Which turns it into G.
It's the four chord, so >> [music] >> just simple chord notes country sound. And then it transitions into the second half of the verse, where the chords are changing.
>> [music] >> And this is especially tricky rhythmically, because it's not just on one, [music] two, one, [singing] two, three, four, one, two, three, four, but it's one, two, three, four.
>> [music] >> She also has a little bit of a delay on that solo to make the notes longer, to sustain them for longer. An important thing with a delay effect is that you need to time it to the tempo of the song.
The intro chord riff or hook.
>> [music] >> And we go to the third verse. Who's going to sing?
Okay.
>> [music] >> Remember the riff?
Let's go and sing along.
>> Rolling on the river. [music] Rolling.
>> And harmonies.
>> Rolling on the river.
>> Rolling.
>> Rolling.
Rolling. [music] Rolling on the river.
>> [music] >> Rolling.
Rolling.
>> Huh.
>> Rolling on the river.
>> [music] [music] >> Woo.
Woo. Wow.
That was amazing. Great energy again.
Great performances. Absolutely lovely family.
And talented bunch indeed. This intro chord riff goes like this. Remember how I was saying the key was D here?
Here we're branching outside of that key to make it more interesting, more surprising. So we go to the chord C, >> [music] >> which is two semitones below D. So from here to here.
Then we go to A, which is part of the D a key, but in this context it kind of almost doesn't feel like it. And then we continue to G, and then to F, >> [music] >> which is three semitones above the chord D.
And it creates this surprising element, this contrasting part uh to the general D major positive, countryish, rock and rolly atmosphere. Thanks guys so much for watching.

Like if you want a one-on-one session and you can also get my ebook that will teach you how to better practice in only 20 minutes a day. Okay, I'm really glad that Mission Souls are sharing these beautiful covers uh that they are inviting us into their world and basically facilitate this gathering around their music that we are experiencing right now because I think world really needs it.
Uh we really need to turn back into culture to remember who we are as humans and and define ourselves again in contrast to AI and current technologies. And I could spend hours talking about this and philosophical ideas behind my views, but the main point is that we are here together.
We are supporting good artists.
And that's how it should be. I'll see you in the next video. Keep it funky.
