Sociologists Ecklund and Johnson's research reveals that atheism among scientists is not monolithic but manifests in three distinct categories: modernist atheists who are dismissive of religion and embrace the conflict model, culturally religious atheists who participate in religious communities despite being atheists, and spiritual atheists who cultivate their own sense of spirituality through scientific pursuit. The study, based on surveys of 93 atheist scientists and in-depth interviews with 81, challenges the popular perception of atheism as uniformly hostile toward religion, demonstrating that most atheist scientists reject scientism and hold diverse, nuanced worldviews.
