WHY ALL 8 PLANETS MOVE IN THE SAME DIRECTION

[00:00:28]When that cloud collapsed under its own gravity, it did not collapse evenly.

[00:00:35]The same way a figure skater pulls in their arms and speeds up, the cloud shrank and its rotation accelerated.

[00:00:49]Whatever direction the cloud was spinning, everything born from it inherited that spin.

[00:00:56]The sun formed at the center.

[00:00:59]The leftover gas and dust flattened into a spinning disc around it.

[00:01:04]Inside that disc, dust clumped into rocks.

[00:01:08]Rocks clumped into boulders.

[00:01:11]Boulders became planets.

[00:01:14]And because every planet was built from the same rotating disc, they all orbit the same way.

[00:01:23]Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

[00:01:33]All of them still carrying the memory of that first ancient spin.

[00:01:38]But here is where it gets strange.

[00:01:40]Venus rotates backwards.

[00:01:43]If you stood on Venus, the sun would rise in the west and set in the east.

[00:01:48]Uranus rotates completely on its side, like a bowling ball rolling around the sun.

[00:01:54]So, what happened?

[00:01:56]Catastrophic collisions.

[00:01:58]The early solar system was a violent demolition derby.

[00:02:01]Giant impacts were common.

[00:02:04]Scientists believe Venus was hit by something massive, large enough to flip its entire rotation.

[00:02:10]Uranus got knocked onto its side the same way.

[00:02:13]The exceptions don't break the rule, they confirm it.

[00:02:17]Think about what this means.

[00:02:19]The iron at the core of Earth and the iron in your blood, same cloud.

[00:02:26]The water in the oceans and the ice on Saturn's moons, same cloud.

[00:02:31]Every planet moving right now, tonight, as you watch this, still rotating from a spin that began before the Sun even existed.

[00:02:41]But here is the question scientists still cannot answer.

[00:02:46]Where did the original cloud get its spin?
