Most Writers Blame the Wrong Thing

[00:00:00]Your book idea isn't the problem. Most writers don't get stuck because the idea is bad. They get stuck in the middle.

[00:00:16]And then they think, "Hmm, maybe I need a better story idea." Most writers stay in the scenes that feel emotionally safe. And then they wonder why their story feels flat. As as humans, we have a heck of a lot more than the safe places in our lives. The best stories usually come from the writers that go into those dark, scary places. So, your book idea isn't the problem. You just started writing without understanding what your story is [music] fully about. So, you might have the scenes that don't connect. The middle feels messy, and the book, it keeps collapsing halfway through. Aesthetics is not the story, and cool characters are not the story.

[00:01:03]What your reader needs is that tension, that movement. It's that reason to keep turning the pages. So many writers have quit before their story has become clear. Most first [music] drafts feel messy in the middle. That's how it is.
