In sports manga, maintaining character consistency and avoiding plot convenience devices is essential for compelling storytelling; when characters are retconned or used as plot devices rather than developed as independent personalities, it undermines reader investment and diminishes the impact of character arcs, as demonstrated by the Blue Lock vs France match where Loki's inconsistent performance and Isagi's quick resolution of conflicts with Hugo reduced the narrative tension that would have made the game more satisfying.

The Rise And Fall Of The Blue Lock Vs France Match…|Full ReviewAdded:
The time is now. The time is now for me to give you my full and honest, objective Blue Lock versus France match review. In this video, I'm going to be covering every single facet of the France game, which I thought was well written to not so well written, and at the end, I will give you my true verdict on this game.
And you can comment your thoughts down below, whatever you think. Please remember to like and subscribe, guys, and you will get more videos like these for almost every single game in the U20 World Cup. And yeah, man, join the Discord down below in the description.
Without further ado, let's get right into this massive video. First off, I want to start off by talking about the buildup and or stakes of this game and the overall placement of the game in the order of matches we have to play in the group stage. As you guys know, when it gets announced for the first time that we are actually going to be end up playing France in the group stages of the US World Cup, the hype went through the roof. One, because France has always been characterized as like the best nation in football in blue. You know, they have Noel Noah. We've seen Loki. We just seen Charles the previous arc. We knew that we would butt head towards France at some point in the tournament.
We knew this along with the hype from Loki where he's him and Isagi's rivalry has basically been built up since the third selection. And up till this point in the manga, we have been waiting for them to actually play and us to see Loki in a full match. Cuz up till this point, we did not see Loki in an entire game ever in the entirety of the series. We just seen flashes. And from those flashes, we could easily make out that this guy was already probably the best U20 striker in the entire world, like the narrative was telling us. Another thing that made us really hyped about this game was the fact that they had another new Gen 11 on top of Loki and Charles. That just made the game a lot more interesting cuz like initially you think it's just Loki and Charles that you have to play against, but no, there's a there's an entirely different player who we might have to worry about who could actually counter Isagi who at this point in the series was on a roll.
He had not lost for over 200 chapters.
The entire Neo Eiguous League, Isagi had been dominating and winning and winning and winning. So this was the perfect moment to set up the stakes. this was the perfect game for us to actually set Isagi back for him to get his first loss. Unfortunately, for the placement of this game, I think that the stakes actually would have been higher if we played England first. Now, hear me out.
I do like the structure of us playing France, not knowing if we were going to win or lose or draw, right? Because we play them and then we have to play England to inevitably make it to the next round. But as we know this game ends in a loss for for blue lock and as we also know the next game we basically have to and it's basically almost guaranteed that we are going to defeat England to make it to the next round.
The narrative had basically predicted the fact that we are going to defeat England. I personally feel like if we had lost to England, right, let's just say we lost or drew to England, that would only level up the stakes for this game, seeming as we are playing an even better team and it shows you the reality of the U20 World Cup as it's not all sunshine and rainbows like it was portraying earlier. Oh, like you know, we play against Nigeria or we zero them.
the reality would settle in very quick as you play a top side like England maybe draw or lose to them then it's a win go home essentially or like draw against France I would personally prefer a draw against England who would also go on to lose to France so then I think it would make the way of events go would be very different there would be a whole bunch of possibilities you can go through with this game and the results you can do is because now blue could end up losing to France they would have to beat France if they want to definitively pass. They cannot lose to them, right?
If they cannot lose them, the pressure would be high. The stakes would be so high, right? And also a draw could be happening in this. This would set up so much in in the results-wise. You can have so many different results for this game and the stakes would be as high as they've ever been with the pressure mounting on Isagi more than it's ever been. But nonetheless, I don't think it was a bad choice to put this game in front of the England game because how can you justify drawing against France and drawing against England? You know, you kind of have to lose to at least one of them if you want to go through. So, I am glad with the choice that Conro made.
I just think the stakes would be that much higher if we had played England first and had to defeat France almost essentially to make it to the next round. Now, we get into the actual game and man, this game started off with a bang. We get to see this new character, Hugo, absolutely making an impact right from the jump. Hugo was quite literally already some people's favorite character within his first three chapters of being in this in this game. He starts the game off getting an assist right away to Charles and France immediately established dominance. I loved this start to the game, guys. I absolutely adored it. I loved how Isagi, somebody who seemed like he had the upper hand for the good part of around third 300 chapters at this point, not 300, 150 chapters at this point, now finally facing a roadblock which feel uncsurmountable. This feel like an entirely new equation to the game because initially it's all about Ego's philosophy. The thing that Hugo presents to the series now is a whole different outlook, like an outlook that directly contradicts Ego's philosophy. And some people might even view it as better. It caused so much discourse into the blue law community when Hugo revealed his ideology to Isagi and what he should be a number one or number two. I could just see how this one character's introduction was able to change Blue Discourse forever. Another thing I immediately found different from this game and other games was the fact that France's NPCs were actually doing stuff.
And I was thinking that these guys would set up rivalries with the players they matched up with. You know, we see these two guys here. I don't remember their names, by the way, which is going to come up later, but I don't remember their names. These guys here forcing rivalries with Botcher and Shagiri. I was thinking that this would be a sort of U20 thing, a return back to form for Knesiro as we will finally get to see NPCs, seemingly NPCs, matching up with our main players and our main players having to evolve past them and win their matchups to end up trying to score goals. It would make the game feel way more alive than dead as we don't have to constantly play against three players. I feel like this whole thing with the U20 World Cup though gives Kesho a lot more freedom because as you guys can see France scored off the first kickoff of the game. That would never happen in the NEL. Never. So the fact that the U20 World Cup doesn't limit him to a three-goal rule is very good for him cuz he can decide to give you a goal whenever. It's almost unpredictable whenever you can get a goal. Somehow he still manages to make it predictable sometimes. But I feel like against the NEL, it's pretty good still. Dare I say that this first half of Blue Lock versus France might be one of the best first halfs the series has ever offered in the entirety of the series, every single game, because there's just so much internal conflict in Blue Lock that starts with Hugo's philosophy. Isagi facing a real threat like I mentioned earlier. Not looks like it's someone he can't surpass right now. Somebody who he has to go through the tournament which made the second selection so compelling as he lost to Ren so early on to the point that it felt like an uncsurmountable gap. And to see him bridge that gap slowly throughout the tournament, play against Ren again and actually be able to compete with him the next time was so compelling for the first time because we were like, "Oh my gosh, at the beginning of this arc, we did not think Isagi could actually even touch this guy." I was thinking Kesho was going to the same thing with Hugo and especially because not only was Hugo affecting Isagi, this guy was affecting the entirety the entirety of Blue Lock. We then get to see Kurasu adapting to Hugo's philosophy. Putting a knife into Blue Lock like that, tearing them apart is something we haven't seen done in this narrative in so long, bro.
We have not seen that in so long.
Literal blue lock teammates butdding heads with each other. Now, I know people are going to point to Kaiser and Isagi doing this. Listen, they weren't really teammates in blue lock, so that doesn't really count. I'm talking about like actual blue lockers beefing with each other. We haven't seen this in so long. This brought us back to a return to form. I was thinking in this first half that this game might end up being the best game or the second best game in all of Blue Lock just from this first half. But this half didn't come without its negatives as it wasn't all good. I feel like that goal that Hi scored and it being revealed out of nowhere that this guy's some sort of exceptional shooter when we have seen anything but that throughout the entire story just feels like kind of an excuse for Kesho to make Hiori and Blue Lock score a goal while adapting to Hugo's philosophy and also making it unpredictable. I feel like that just feels like a copout for Kane Shiurro. But I let it slide because you know this half was also really good.
Another thing that I have to point out that I didn't really get too much is the Isagi dependency. It is later revealed in halftime that Blue were purposely playing with a system that benefits Isagi that revolves around Ronnie Sagi.
So that's why since Isagi was locked up in this half, Blue Lock wasn't able to function like a normal team like they usually do where everyone's trying to chase their own goal. But I still feel like this is kind of [ __ ] because in the last game Nigeria, we quite literally seen, yes, I know Isagi wasn't being locked up, but even without Isagi even directly being involved in plays, they were able to score like it was nothing. That could be pointed towards the level of competition Nigeria to France is completely different. But at the same time, I felt like it was kind of a copout to make it so that Kaneshiro could write Isagi out the equation. And by writing Isakagi out the equation, he also writes out five other characters out the equation and makes it so that Blue Lock just can't do anything in this first half. Again, I will let all this go because I still thought this first half was that good. And it raises more questions as to why Ren doesn't have his own system. This is going to be a problem that I probably come back to later because Ren is also a number one.
So, shouldn't we have two systems? one revolving around Isagi and one revolving around Ren giving as they are two both of our number on's. I don't know. It's just a thought that I had. Anyway, we kick off the second hot the second half.
And I'm not going to lie, guys. This was a fumble on Kaneshiro's part. I said I was going to come back to this later, but I'll just do this now. Chigiri and Botera are immediately subbed off. The two characters who I thought were going to play a part in this game, the two characters who I thought were going to have this rivalry with these other France NPCs actually making these NPCs feel like real characters more than NPCs, they just get benched. They quite literally just get benched. Now, am I was I super angry at this at the time this happened? Not really. Because for their substitutions, we seen Borrow and Shido come in. Two characters have who we've been waiting to play. Honestly, we've been waiting to see Borrow and Shido play on the same field together, hop in the game, right? But for the sacrifice and hindsight that I have now of how this game ended up playing out and how Keshiro seemed to set up sort of a rivalry between these two characters only to not pay it off at all and just leave it there, it feels like he just reverted back to his old roots of the NEL where he wanted just three players that are relevant on France. the rest of NPCs just show up whenever it's time to make a block or you can use them both as plot devices and not actual characters.
Now, I was talking about how I thought Shido and Borrow subbing on was great because we needed these characters to play. We hadn't seen them play on the same pitch. We haven't seen them play at all in the U20 World Cup so far. So, people were rightfully hyped. But, I'm going to cut to the end of the game now where we talk about Shido's performance.
And guys, realistically, what did Shido do this entire game? Aside from that goal that he quote unquote caused, Shinoid, all he did to in this game was kind of be used as a plot device to be devoured by Bro and take up Loki so that Borrow could have an excuse to score for Kaneshiro. Again, you're seeing this trend where Keshiro is consistently making his characters plot devices to make stuff happen in the plot very conveniently. First with these NPCs and now with Shido. Literally, Cidto, the guy who scored a brace in U20, is now just being used as somebody who's going to get into certain places of the field where Kurro wants him to be, use his little quirk that he has of being unpredictable and being a wild card only to get him to into these places just so that other people could devour him and have an excuse of scoring because the opponent didn't even remember them coming in. So yes, I thought Sheida was absolutely wasted in this entire game where a lot of people were hyped and a lot of people were rightfully disappointed because now it's been at least hundred something chapters since Shido had a good performance. And I was never the hugest fan of Shido. I thought he was a cool character when he was first introduced, but just seeing somebody who was used to be number two next to Ren fall so low to the point of like he almost does less than some of these NPCs in this game is just very embarrassing. and sad to how Kanesho is treating his cast now in the series.
Anyways, moving on from him though, I like the way he treated Borrow in this.
Borrow comes in and immediately acts like Borrow Show. Borrow immediately realizes that Isagi's system isn't working. So, he does what the Borrow thing is and devours Kurasu's system. I love this from Borrow. The fact that unlike all these characters who are not acting like themselves, Borrow is acting like himself still. Borrow is still trying to play the blue lock way. I love that from Borrow. Great from Kaneiro.
But another thing we have to talk about is Loki. Throughout this game, we have now been around 60 minutes into this game that I've been covering into the second half as well. Loki has always been gassed up as the best U20 striker.
As I mentioned in the beginning of the series, I've counted now. Up till this point, we had seen Loki get stopped three different times. one from Chigiri, one from Kasu, and now one from Kunigami. Now, a lot of people at this point were making excuses for Loki, like, "Oh, he wasn't trying. Oh, this, that." And a lot of people will use his last yawn as proof of, "Oh, yeah, Loki wasn't trying." See, see, look, he's yawning. But I actually beg to differ. I think that this is just a huge retcon.
You might be wondering, Extendo, how is this a retcon? I actually think this is a reccon because of the fact that before this game, Loki was actually retconed to being a new gen 11 member. Before this, there was a large majority of the people that thought Loki was not a New Gen 11 member, but higher than the New Gen 11 altogether, which is why people thought that this guy was quite literally such a good footballer. And rightfully so, he would get onto the pitch for a couple minutes and punk new Gen 11 members like Kaiser. So, we would all be thinking that this guy, yes, he's a level above the New Gen 11. But I guess not. With the start of this game, Loki actually gets recconed into being a new gen 11.
And I feel like this is largely due to the fact that Kono realized you can't have a character this strong going up against Isagi so early. We have to remember guys, Loki was part of the world five during the second selection.
And even more than that, Loki was a master striker last arc. So how did we go from that to somebody who is getting stopped by Kunagami, Tiger, and Kurasu or Nico? And Nico as well. Like how is that possible? It only has to be a retcon. Loki has been retconed. So all of his previous nar narrative statements that people use to say that this guy's the best U20 striker up till this point I don't think they're even valid anymore because you can make the excuse that yes Loki isn't trying but I also think this is part of the reccon and Khiro Loki proves it that he is trying to score because he goes into halftime and talks to Charles and says oh the world's going to be happy if I score kind of alluding to the point that he wants to score a goal if he wasn't trying to win the game and score. Then I could understand like he was just sitting around going like, "Ah, we can do whatever. I'm we're going to win this game anyways. I don't care."
But he actively goes and says, "Feed me more passes. I'm trying to score." What does that mean, guys? That means that Loki is actively trying and still getting stopped. This is embarrassing from a player who we once thought was so far above players like Kaiser who were in the new Gen 11. He was so far above these type of players that he was only allowed to play three minutes in the NEL.
Noel Noah was only allowed to play three minutes a game in the NEL. So what does that say about this character? I think he has gotten recconed to the ground because Kane Shiro knew the the power scaling had just fallen to the floor. He could not use this character who was so OP so early on in the series, but he still wanted to use him. And now Loki is completely underwhelming and falls flat.
Despite this, Loki still ends up getting a goal with Hugo's help. This does not redeem him any bit. This goal was quite literally one of the most basic goals I've ever seen. And also, he's playing against an Aiku who is quite literally been relegated also to an NPC level.
Also, we move on after this, and I don't think people remember this. I think because of the weekly reading and the and the breaks and stuff like that, we don't remember how quick this happens.
But guys, literally a chapter after this, Isagi is able to overcome and find the answer against Hugo.
Yes, yes, yes, yes. Hold on, hold on. I know you guys I said that very fast and you guys are probably puzzled, guys. A chapter or two chapters after this goal from Loki, Isagi is able to find his answer against Hugo.
this conflict that has been built up throughout the entirety of this France match. This conflict which we were so satisfied to see that I mentioned early on was making the whole blue lock community speculate and wonder what is going on gets resolved in two chapters after Loki's goal. Two chapters. Are you serious Kaneshiro? It's like Kaneshiro at this point doesn't like to see his main character suffering at all. He doesn't want to see Isagi losing for even a second because it feels like Kaneshu doesn't care about a long and drawn out character arc anymore. Kanes just wants his next Isagi or a far moment cuz that's exactly what happens.
Two chapters after Loki's goal, Isakagi is able to find his answer and then boom boom bow. He gets all the way to the edge of France's half and even has Hugo saying, "You pass blue lock, dumbass.
What do you mean you pass blue a half ago? You were just saying that this team is not ready and Isag needs to understand that he needs to be a number two. Where did that go? Blue, where did that go, Hugo? What happened?" We then need to talk about how in literally the last chapter, Isagi defeated Hugo with the power of luck. Now in essence this makes sense as we have you know Hugo who is characterized as a machine as a robot obviously he wouldn't understand the you know the thing of luck he wouldn't understand that he's a machine basically but I still think that this move that Kanesh uses is just a large excuse again to just nerf Hugo he nerfs Hugo to the point of that the fact that Isaki is using a move that he tried to use earlier but Hugo quite literally stopped him very easily And now all of a sudden Hugo isn't able to stop him because Isagi mentioned luck.
How Hugo you know if you just wait if you just wait for him to take his touch he can't beat you. You know that right?
Isagi never turns around like Nagi. He isn't able to have a ball control where he just keeps the ball trapped to his feet as he turns and shoots in the same motion. He isn't able to do that. Why are you now buying into this luck battle as if you need to do it? You don't.
Hugo, you already stopped this move.
What happened to this character who was so compelling? Kaneiro has both made a character that was probably a top three character in Blue Lock with his introduction to now a character who might have even fallen out of the top 10. This is another thing that I think is just becoming plot convenience and a plot device for Kaneshow to use in Blueock. It feels like whenever Kanesho has something he doesn't want to properly explain, elaborate on or, you know, take time to pay off with a nice exploration, he just uses luck. He literally just uses luck to try and bail himself out. Now, when luck happened against Isagi in the second selection, I was thinking it was a perfect time to use luck because yes, luck is a part of sports, but luck is not something you can just call upon randomly and just use it. It's not that luck works in a way where, as you can see, Ren chose to try and fi try and feel his luck. He had no control of the ball actually bouncing there to score the final goal in that game. But Ren's luck is what made it happen. He went there not knowing if that would happen. But Isagi, for some reason, is able to now willfully call upon luck and be like, "Hey, um, you know what? [ __ ] it. We're going to go into a gamble. Me and you, Hugo. Even though you've already stopped this move before, who cares? It's going to work on you now because I'm Isagu and you're going to bow down to me. I cannot, my author would not let me lose to one person throughout the entire game. So, Isagi forces Isagi into Hugo into a luck battle and boom, boom, bap, Hugo is defeated. Isagi then take before he takes the shot, [ __ ] his foot back and begins to shoot only to be intercepted kind of by Ren who now we can talk about Mr. Rento.
Ren's character has been run to the ground. I have never seen a character in this series get as bad as Ren has. Ren went from an extremely mysterious, charismatic, interesting character when he was introduced in the second selection. Just I keep mentioning the second selection. What a great arc that was. That was the good days of Blue Lock, right? Either way, Ren was such a great character back then. You know, he was doing cool stuff almost every chapter. He was a great anchor to fuel Isagi's development and evolution long-term and not over one game. And he was actually a very compelling character with his conflict with Toshi Sai and stuff like that. How this intertwined.
Again, I've already talked about this in another video, but I feel like this destroyer mode has really ruined Ren's character rather than enhance it. The first time we seen it, it was great. It was cool. Everyone wants to see it again. But it feels like ever since then, Kanesho has failed to capture that same hype, that same spark in the community for destroy mode. Now it feels like whenever I uses destroy mode, I was like, "Oh, using it again. Oh shit."
Like, whoa, Ren's going destroyer, right? It just feels like an an excuse to make Ren like a bootleg borrow and just put him in situations which he normally wouldn't put himself in anyways. So again, another plot device thing that Konos uses. Either way, Ren's character has just been ruined to a thing that who used to be independent and used to strive to be his own person rather than a guy who chases after Sai rather than tries to be sai has now been relegated to someone who can only act after Isagi acts. So now the fact that Isagi who has been ghosting all game starts to do something, it then enables Ren who's been ghosting all game to act as a plot device. So, they could miss this chance and lead to Loki scoring the final goal. Again, this does not redeem Loki. I'm sorry. Loki may have scored two goals and the second goal may have been quite nice. You know, he dribble past six players apparently and scored.
But my only question is why couldn't Loki do this the entire game? That's just my question. If Loki could really go the length of the field in like a matter of seconds now, cuz there was 2 minutes when Isagi started his attack, there should be a couple seconds left now. if he's at his box and can make a run from damn near his own half all the way to the blue lock half, dribbling past six players in between and scoring a goal in the last seconds. Why wasn't he doing this the entire game? Why is he only to able to do this at the last moment of the game when he's supposed to be the most tired he's been the entirety of the series? See, it's not consistent.
It doesn't make sense. These characters are now only smart when Kesho needs them to be and only dumb when Kesho needs them to be. It's literally that. These characters aren't characters anymore.
They act as plot devices more than characters. Cuz now Loki is only fast when Kaneo needs him to be. But earlier in the game, when Loki is supposed to be fast, he's getting caught up to by Chagiri and Kurasu. So, it makes no consistent sense. The writing has completely been god awful this second half. From what showed out to be a promising first half with tons of promise, tons of buildup, tons of payoff, quickly devolved into a abhorentt mess of writing in the second half and I quite literally don't know what happened. But yeah, I thought this was a very unsatisfying ending to a very hyped game, possibly the most hyped game in the manga since the U20 game. And honestly, I'm be honest, they're setting up a rematch for Japan to not end up facing France again in the final. I actually think this is true. I don't think Blue Lock will face France again.
And I quite literally don't want them to face France again. Please tell me that they do not place France again because I feel like this game has already covered most of the conflicts that we have already had. Like I guess this sets up more conflicts towards the end too, which I appreciate. towards the rest of the tournament. We can look at if Ego's philosophy is truly the right way to go.
It plants more doubt, right? It does that. I can appreciate that. I think that's good. It's interesting. I'm very interested to find out where the manga goes next. But as for this game itself though, and looking at it in totality, this game might be one of the worst games in the entire manga. And it's so disappointing because this game could have been one of the best. Could have been one of the best. And it's the hope that kills you guys because I genuinely thought that this game was going to be one of the best. it was going to set up Hugo as a generational antagonist in blue lock history. He was going to go into Mount Rushmore as one of the best antagonists in the series. And while I still think he has that potential, it kind of feels underwhelming because Isagi has overcome him in the same game that he was facing adversity from him.
So, it takes away the impact for when Isagi eventually does play him again and overcomes him. And I understand why Kesho is probably dropping this foreshadowing hint of Japan not making the finals because genuinely I don't even think Kesho wants Japan to make the finals. Kesho himself probably doesn't want to write this game again probably cuz this game ended up turning into another NEL game where we just have three characters going at it and Charles just not even three now it's two at this point for France Charles just quickly quickly just evaporates Charles does not do [ __ ] this entire game after scoring Ko uses him as a plot device for scoring you know the first goal of the game oh it's unexpected woo Charles is actually going to do something in this game to after his goal just quite literally like oh Ko's like ah give him his moment. I don't even care. I I don't need to care about him anymore. Who cares? Who cares?
Right? Charles scored a goal. Who cares about anything else about him, right?
Like it's he doesn't exist. We're not playing a football match for now. This is literally like a simulator where I choose these characters who are more like plot devices than characters now.
And I just like put them in places I want them to be. Doesn't matter about anything else. That's what Ko has demoted this series and these characters to now. Whoa. I had to get some water after that rant I kind of went on. you guys could possibly see how angry and heated I got. But I want to look at this game, guys, and it's just I don't see anything but disappointment in this game. And I feel like a lot of other people in the community feel the same way. And me, as someone who's been a longtime fan of Blue Lock, it's not more of a place of coming of hate. I don't hate the series. I don't hate the authors, right? But it's just a thing of I feel like these authors have kind of lost interest in writing the story altogether. I feel like the peak of writing that they have hit has already we've already seen it. It feels like Blue Lock has plateaued and we won't see it get better than we have already seen it. That's the thing that's the feeling I get from this game because if we were to see Blue Lock get better, this game would have ended at least 51 52 with Loki being dominant the entire time. I was expecting Loki to be this Ushiwaka level threat in HiQu where they had to devise an entire strategy just to stop him one time or two times. Like that's how tough I thought Loki was going to be. And that's the just the difference between Hiq's writing style and Blueox. You know, HiQ sets up a threat and actually pays him off.
Actually makes him seem like an uncsurmountable obstacle that makes it much more satisfying when you do beat him. But unlike Ushiwaka, Loki is kind of just recconed into like this mid player who, you know, needs Hugo and Charles to give him passes and only uses his speed when he truly needs to and then acts like he wasn't trying at the end. So Kesho has a bailout. If we do end up playing Loki again in the future, he can point back to this panel and be like, "Oh, look, Loki wasn't trying."
When clearly he's been in flow eyes multiple times in this game and he's been getting dunked on over and over again, nutmeg by Ren and all this stuff.
So, who cares at this point, right?
Either way, for this game, guys, I will probably rate it a 3.5 out of 10. This game had potential, failed to deliver on the p on the potential. This game had excellent buildup, failed to deliver on that buildup, and this game had a stupid resolution that I quite literally don't like. The only thing I think is holding up this game for me is the fact that it does set up interesting conflicts for the future. So yeah, that's the one thing I can truly look to for this game that I enjoyed. I hope you guys enjoyed this review. Please remember to like and subscribe. I'm quite literally exhausted. Join the Discord down below in the description. Let me know your thoughts on this game. Again, remember if I say I don't like the game, you don't have to say you didn't like the game.
