Wilfred Owen's 'Strange Meeting' is a powerful anti-war poem where a dying soldier encounters his enemy in the afterlife, revealing that war destroys dreams, youth, and peace while forcing enemies to recognize their shared humanity; the poem's central message is that true understanding between opposing sides comes too late, after lives and dreams have been destroyed, emphasizing that peace should be sought in life rather than after death.

So, students, keeping this aside, let us get started. First, let us try to understand a little about the poet. Poet is a Wilfred Owen. Okay, who is the poet? Poet is Wilfred Owen. He was not just a poet, students. He was also a soldier who actually fought in World War I. So, whatever he writes about war, it is not imagination. Okay, it comes from his real experience because he was a soldier who fought in World War I. And one important thing about him is he did not show war as something great or heroic, okay? Instead, he showed the real truth of war, like pain, fear, suffering, and death and all. So, basically, he's not showing that war is something great, something heroic, or glorious.
No, he's showing the real truth of war, like how it leads to pain, fear fear, suffering, and all.
So, that is why in his poems we feel very emotional, and we feel powerful because they show that what soldiers feel and go through. So, Strange Meeting, it is one of his important poems, we can say, where he gives a very deep message about war and humanity.
This is what it is all about the poet.
Now, if we talk a little about the poem Strange Meeting, we can say that this poem is written in a dream-like way.
Okay, it is a dream-like poem. A soldier, he finds himself in a strange underground place after death, okay? And there he meets another soldier who turns out to be his enemy. But instead of fighting, they talk calmly, and they understand each other. So, through this, the poet shows that war is meaningless.
Enemies are actually the same human beings, and war destroys not only lives, but also it destroys dreams. So, it is little about the Strange Meeting. Once you understand the summary, you will get a clearer idea about it. So, let us get started with the summary. The first paragraph starts something like this.
Poem begins with the speaker, who is a soldier, escaping from the battlefield through a dark tunnel. The tunnel looks strange and mysterious, like a place under the earth. It feels like he has entered a dream or the underworld. The atmosphere is silent and heavy. The speaker soon realizes that he is among dead soldiers. This shows that he himself may also be dead. The setting creates a serious and thoughtful mood.
So, students, the poem begins in a very unusual and a slightly a way, okay? Almost it is like a dream.
The speaker, who is a soldier, says that he escapes from the battlefield. Okay, he got escaped from the battlefield and he entered a dark tunnel. I hope you know what is a tunnel, right? So, now this is not just any normal tunnel, okay? It feels very strange. It is silent and also it is mysterious, like a place under the earth where no one lives, okay? Like underground world we say, right? So, he's feeling something like that. So, when we imagine this, it gives a feeling like he has entered another world, right? Maybe even the world of the dead. It can be, right? So, as he moves forward, he starts noticing that the place is filled with dead soldiers.
Wherever he is seeing, he is seeing dead soldiers. Now, at this point we understand something important. Like, if he is among dead people, then maybe he himself is also dead, right? As far as he's going to get dead soldiers, he might also be dead because he's seeing dead soldiers around him. So, he just doesn't realize it immediately, but it might be something like that. So, this creates very serious mood. It is not a happy or active scene we can say, but a quiet and heavy atmosphere that makes us think deeply, right?
Next paragraph, as the speaker moves forward, he sees a dead soldier who suddenly rises up and looks at him.
At first, there is no anger or fear between them. Instead, there is sadness and understanding. The dead soldier begins to speak calmly. He reveals that he was killed in a war. Slowly, it becomes very clear that he was an enemy soldier, possibly killed by the speaker himself. This creates a shocking and emotional moment in the poem. Now, something very unexpected happens.
Students, the speaker sees a dead soldier, okay? And suddenly that dead soldier, he rises up and looks at him.
And that dead soldier, he is looking at the speaker. Normally, if we meet an enemy, especially in war, we expect anger, fear, or else aggression, right?
But here, nothing like that happens.
Instead, there is a silence. There is sadness, and there is a kind of understanding between them. So, the dead soldier, he starts speaking very calmly without any anger. He says that he was killed in the war, and slowly we we realize something very shocking that he is not just any soldier, but he is actually the enemy of the speaker. And even more shocking is that it is possible that the speaker himself killed that dead soldier. Okay, now imagine this situation, meeting the person you killed, but instead of hatred, there is only sadness. So, this makes the moment very emotional and powerful.
The dead enemy soldier explains that war has destroyed not only their lives, but also their dreams and hopes. He says that he once had dreams of creating something beautiful and meaningful in the world. However, war stopped him from achieving anything. He feels that both sides have suffered equally. Even though they fought as enemies in life, in death, they realize they are the same human beings. Now, the enemy soldier begins to share his feelings in this paragraph, okay? He started to share his feelings. He says that war did not just take away their lives, but also it destroyed their dream dreams. So, before the war, he had hopes and plans, okay?
Like he wanted to do something meaningful. He wanted to achieve something good in life. But war, because of this, it ended everything before he could achieve anything. So, now he realizes something very important that both sides have suffered equally.
Speaker side, as well as this soldier side. Both the sides suffered equally.
Not just one side, but everyone suffered because of the war. So, even though they were enemies during their life, after death they understand that they are actually the same. Right, they are both human beings with the same feelings, the same dreams, same life and all. But they understood this late when they are dead.
Which doesn't make any sense, right?
When we are alive, we need to respect each other. We need to show that love and care with each other. We need to be good with others. But after that, does it make any sense if we understand or if we realize? No, it's already too late.
So, the same thing happened here.
Next, the enemy soldier speaks about the pity of war. He means that war is not glorious or heroic as people think.
Instead, it is full of pain, fear and loss. War forces people to kill others who are actually similar to them. The soldier says that they were doomed to share the tragedy of killing each other.
This means that both soldiers were victims of the same cruel system of war.
Now, the soldier talks about something very deep. That is the pity of war.
Here, pity means sadness. Okay, it can also be tragedy. Means something which is very painful. So, he's saying that war is not something great or heroic, okay? As many people believe that war is something great or war is something heroic. No, it is not like that. It is full of sufferings. It is full of fear.
It is full of loss. So, war here, it forces people to kill others who are actually just like them. Right, we people are killing ourselves in the war because all are human beings. So, this war system or this war, it makes us kill the similar person. Okay, the same human being which we have in our world. So, he says that they were doomed to share this tragedy. That means both of them were trapped in the same situation. Like they did not choose this freely, but they were forced into it. So, in reality, they are not enemies by choice, we can say. Like they are victims of war.
The poem shows that war destroys youth, creativity, peace, and progress. The enemy soldier says that if he had lived, he would have worked for peace and understanding. Instead of building a better world together, they were forced to fight and die. The idea of enemies disappear in death and only shared humanity remains. Now, the poem shows the bigger impact of war, okay? War does not just kill people, but it destroys everything. Like it destroys youth, creativity, peace, progress, and all. It destroys everything, right? Everything get destroyed, collapsed. So, the enemy soldier, he says that if he had lived, he could have done something meaningful, right? He could have worked for peace.
He could have helped the society. He could have created something good. But instead of building a better world, he was forced to fight and die. Because of the fight, he got died.
What is the thing here?
And now in death, something important happens that the idea of enemy disappears, okay? There is no us and there is no them anymore. They are only human beings.
At the end of the poem, yeah, at the end of the poem, there is a moment of reconciliation. The enemy soldier invites the speaker to rest with him.
There is no hatred, only tiredness and sorrow. This handshake or peaceful ending symbolizes forgiveness and understanding. It shows that peace is possible, but sadly, it comes only after death. Finally, the poem ends in a very calm but emotional way, students. The enemy soldier, he invites the speaker to rest, okay? There is no anger, no revenge, no hatred, but only tiredness and sadness. So, it feels like both of them are finally free from the pain of war. So, this moment, it represents peace and forgiveness. It shows that understanding between people is possible. Yes, it is possible. But, the sad part is this understanding comes only after death. So, the poem gives a strong message that peace should come in life, not after everything is lost.
Right, we do have time now. We need to forgive other people. We need to be good with other people. Okay, it's not too late. But, when you realize it when everything is lot lost, that will not make any sense, right? So, this was the explanation. If we talk about the conclusion, students, we can say that this poem gives a very powerful anti-war message, right? Like, it shows that war is a meaningless, right? It is destructive. It explains that enemies are actually the same human beings. It shows how war destroys dreams and future hopes. So, through this poem, poet Wilfred Owen, he clearly tells us that war brings only suffering and true understanding often comes too late, which is [snorts] not good.
