I Tried South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas Instead of the StripAdded:
South Point is far from the strip, but locals swear by it as one of the best value stays in Vegas. I'm testing Vegas options that save you money without ruining your trip. I'm staying here to see if the lower price and bigger rooms are worth the distance. I'll show you the room, casino, food, and how easy it is to get around. Worth it or too far?
It's time to find out, and off we go.
Southbud is such a fitting name for this hotel and casino. is just south of the strip and really feels like a hub.
There's so much packed in here. I love that there's free parking here and you can start your day with Starbucks. It opened on Christmas Day in 2005 and it's easy to see why it became a favorite among the locals. I got here around 100 p.m. a bit early for check-in on the strip. They'd usually charge for that.
So, let's see how it goes here. I'm checking in. Okay.
>> Here's my card and ID.
>> Do you want a key? If you have it looking for >> and can I have a high floor, please? If >> you want a strip view, the highest I have would be on the 16th floor.
>> Perfect.
>> If you wanted a pool view, then I can do the 21st floor.
>> I think this strip is better. Julie, five stars.
>> All right. Thank you.
>> That was fast. And they didn't charge me for early check-in. It's nice that we can head off, settle in, and just relax because it's vacation time and we're not here for the chaos. Or are we?
Oh, wow. This is nice. Don't need a key for it.
Okay, I'm coming into this with zero expectations. I've already stayed in more than 40 hotels here in Vegas.
>> I kind of like this waiting corner over here. This is the part where you say, "I'll wait for you at the lift." It has an old school classic style. I kind of like it. It does smell good. So well-maintained. No restaurant ad.
Ah, wo.
Whoops. Wo. It's massive. I drove here for 4 hours, and I must admit, I'm kind of hungry. So, before I show you the room, I'd like to eat some good food.
There are a lot of choices here for casual dining, and they are not strip fries. I'll tell you all about it, but like there's three restaurants that's giving me a hard time. Like I don't know which one to choose. My first choice is the Mexican place. They do have happy hour that starts at 3:00 p.m. So that's really good, but it's not 3:00 p.m. yet and I'm hungry. Also, they are closed today. What kind of Mexican restaurant is closed on a Tuesday? There's also an Asian restaurant that has 12 to 4:00 p.m. lunch or happy hour special. I am craving for Asian, so I was thinking maybe I should try it out. Also have Coronado Cafe and Shake right here. It looks way cooler than the Fremont hotel one. But while walking to the registration, I saw this seafood place and they do have a good deal. Hi. What's that? Half price. Half price on the cold seal oysters for you. And then that's going to be our lunch special.
Say less. We are dining here because I love seafood. Hello.
>> Hello.
>> I guess I can just sit at the bar. Yeah, we're definitely having the lunch special. Chicken scampy, please.
>> Okay. Anything like getting cup of clam chowder?
>> Sure. Okay.
>> I said yes to the clam chowder so fast.
I was just in the Bay Area visiting my best friend and um I was craving for clam chowder. Here she comes.
Thank you. This for me >> or it's just there.
>> Oh, nice. Thank you. Bread and some butter.
Same color. Worth it. It's a proper napkin right here. And proper utensils, too. I usually have president's butter.
That's my favorite. It's pretty fun sitting at the bar. You can watch the oysters being freshly prepared right in front of you. Wow. We got this for $12.
I thought it was just be like happy hour half price, so it'll just be a little of it. But this campy is a lot. It's also super rich. The chicken is perfection.
I definitely could taste the butter, the garlic, the white wine, and the lemon juice. $20 for all of that plus dip.
Probably ending $25.
That's a good deal. I was thinking of getting an ice cream, but I think our lunch got too creamy, so never mind.
There's something smoking at Delmare Delhi. I just got to find what that is.
Cinnamon bun looks so good. The cake slices here are unusually large. Rocky Roadie.
This is really What is it?
Oh my god, that looks so amazing. Okay, it's corner. Let's see what they have here. They have the basic flavor. What did you get?
>> Bananas, please.
>> Oh my god, it looks so good. How is it?
>> You like it or no? It's very good.
Thank you. Aside from ice cream, they also have smoothies. And I saw the green machine. It's $8. Maybe we'll have it for breakfast. Time to make a bet. This looks so comfy. Wo! It's chair swings.
Love it. So comfy. You can also bet here, but I kind of like in person. Can I bet on the Dodgers, please?
>> How much?
>> $50. $30 to win. And I hope we win later, so we will have a good dinner. 3 p.m. right now. And the place is popping. I saw $5 blackjacks and also $5 three card poker. You look like you're having a grand time.
>> No, I just got taken out of it.
>> The casino is like so beautiful. I'm really impressed how busy they are today. I can't wait till we play. But it's time to check out our room. Oh, the gift shop before our room looks inviting.
>> Everything from souvenirs to clothes to alcohol to chips right there. Wait, I kind of want this popcorn. Celebrating 40 years in Las Vegas. 80 proof. 50 bucks. Holy smokes. Is this a towel or a carpet? Which one should I get? $22. I found something so cool. It's a sombrero, but it's also a plate.
Probably is only $1.99.
>> Before I started kicking her out, are you videotaping me? And before I started kicking her, she agreed to sign my book.
And so I'm going up to get the book. She may not sign it now because I'm kicking her. No, >> she's been playing poker for like 30 years. I've been playing for like two weeks.
>> This is mine.
>> All right, yourself. Byebye.
>> We have a one king bedroom with strip view here on the 16th floor. And this is the entrance. It's kind of narrow, but very cool fit check. This is the Lou.
We'll check that out later. And in front of it is the closet. Not a fan of anti- theft hanger. And the steel to steel gives a squee. It's a clean, spacious closet. You've got everything you need in here from iron to the locker. I was even surprised they provide slippers.
>> They are comfy. Past the closet is the vanity table. Good lighting over here.
And this mini drawer contains envelopes.
Here we have a huge TV. And I just found out that they have this coupons. That's pretty cool. A free bingo pack. Buy 1 get one free scoop of ice cream. Can't believe we missed this one. I'm pretty sure this is the fridge right here.
What's in here? Semi cold. If you have guessed, there are plenty of chairs.
Where's the light though? Oh, it's here.
We have a cozy nook over here. This is a comfortable chair. It's time to see the view.
One more time.
As promised, we have the view of the strip. Yeah, it looks far, but I think this is nice at night. Those lights are just too bright. And now it's time for bed.
Oh, wow. It's good bed. We did get a king-size bed and we got three pillows of king-size. They're kind of like a little bit thin, not just fluffy. This painting makes me want to watch their equestrian show. This must be in Utah.
Let's check out the Lou now. Not bad at all. We have a welllit mirror. I just don't get they put the cure egg here.
Ice bucket. That's kind of unsanitary.
And there's a coffee table right there.
Why won't they just put it there?
It fully closes to avoid water splashes.
I do love this type of massage soaps.
We're going to use it. Filled ones. Yes.
Like this video if you like the shower.
Overall, I kind of like this room. It is spacious. It has a fridge, but kind of far from the strip. But let's forget about that and enjoy South Point.
There's a barber shop right here. How much is a haircut here?
>> $35.
>> Fitness gym.
Oh, open for everybody. Then grab your towel as you walk in. The space opens up with rows of weight machines and a cardio area ready for a full workout.
I've actually been doing 30 minutes of biking every day because it's great for the knees. Here is your free water.
I heard this pool is relaxing and familyfriendly. Let's check it out.
>> Do you do that for rental or like >> for sale? Oh, for sale. Awesome. Thank you. Once again, this is spacious and the chairs are free. Hello. Is the water heated?
>> I don't believe so. But um right now, from what I know, that's like our warm pool. And then we have a hot tub right back there. It's not heated. So, are we going to do a cold plunge? Looks nice.
>> It is.
>> I was like, this is the nicest hot tub I've ever seen, >> right? You know what would be cooler if they added like a waterfall right here.
>> It's 64° right now in Vegas. It's still cool. This is their hot tub. It's beautiful. Let's go try it out. The lady at the front desk. Ooh, perfect. Asked me if I want the 24th floor pool full view or the 16th floor strip view. I think I made the right choice of choosing the strip view. Jacuzzi's have a lot of benefits, including reducing stress and improving sleep. I'm having a massage right now. This is perfect. Have a good one. Me, too. What's your channel, >> babe? Traveling. Hi.
>> 15 minutes is good enough. And then we'll move to the warm pool. It feels like a kitty pool cuz it's just 3 ft tall. Now, let's hit the non-heated pool. It is cold. It's also windy because look at the water. It's flowing.
But I've been going to cold plunges. So, I kind of don't mind it. I have to say the vibes here is pretty nice.
Everyone's so kind. The staff, the guests. I love it in here. I've checked out plenty of hotel pools in Las Vegas, but my favorite, I think, is a Virgin Hotel. A hidden gem here would be the hallway with nostalgic photos. Sahara back then, Tropicana. This is Flamingo in 1946.
El Cortez looks the same, and this was in 1941. There is tournament bowling.
This is awesome. Why don't they have this all over Vegas? So, it will help our knees. It also smells so good in here. The equestrian.
>> Why are there trucks here? It's an exhibit for towing. Welcome to South Point Bowling. Bowling?
>> No.
>> Where are you guys going?
>> I'm just walking around.
>> Me, too. Smells like horse manure over here.
I check out the schedule. They said nothing is going on. But >> what's going on right now?
>> Um, they're doing t team penning.
>> I actually don't know what that is, but it's a tree rider equestrian sport where teams cut three specific cattle from a herd and guide them into a small pen within 60 to 90 seconds. By the way, I was allowed to pet the horse, but I was just too scared.
But I really love seeing horses, especially on the year of the horse.
This is a good sign. Food here that you can buy. Wow. South Point has bowling alley, bingo, and cinema. Bingo. Let's go. How do I play? You would come and line up here and everyone comes in here and then you have to decide if you want to do machine, paper, or both. How are they playing to win $500?
>> 1 hour. Guess >> we have to say an hour here.
>> Do you have a clip card?
No.
>> Oh, well, you don't need one. You can play on the machine or you can play on paper, whichever you prefer.
>> I like paper. Green is 11 at these are the payouts and 10 is the highest level at $14. And then these are your payouts.
>> Okay. Green, please. This is going to cover you for most of the games. Um, this one is the max bonus coverall. You play it with the last page. This is $11 >> and press $2.
>> Okay.
>> So, I asked, how do I mark this thing? I thought they're just wo I thought they're just going to give me a pen and no. I have to buy the dabber at the vending machine. $2.
Here we go.
What's the score between the Dodgers and Colorado?
We're winning. You have to pay for the dabber, but then they have two free drinks that will open in just 30 minutes. Hard way. Double hard way.
Double bingo with wild number. It looks like we have three choices for good dinner. Michael's Gourmet Room for high-end fine dining. Silverado Steakhouse for an elegant classic steak dinner. And Don Vitos for traditional Italian cuisine. Well, we had Scampy a while ago. So, I'm checking out Don Vito from the list. Now, we're left with Michael's Gourmet Room or Silverado Steakhouse. My bad. It's Dodgers and SF today. Nobody wants to sit beside me, so I'm moving to them. I don't know how to play.
>> That's why we do this.
>> I don't know. I'm not going to be able to help. For >> those of you who purchase, >> it looks so fun. That's why, >> please take those out.
>> Okay. It's okay. I'm sorry. Find somebody cuz I this this does it all. I just sit here and look at any number.
>> Oh, cool. She's teaching me how to play.
>> You have to dab all the numbers. She's got >> Okay. Eight.
>> So you got to do B8 if you have it anywhere.
>> Okay.
>> Right there. 72.
>> Okay. Yes, ma'am.
>> 72.
>> You asked for help. So there >> 72. Okay.
>> 42 >> and 42. Look under the ends.
>> Happy birthday.
>> One of the two numbers.
>> You're also playing that. You have double.
>> No. No. He's >> This is on machine. He's doing his on paper.
>> I just didn't want to do the paper, so I had to put in the machine.
>> Yeah. What's the score between Dodgers and San Francisco?
>> Uhoh, we're in trouble.
>> So hungry.
>> I want to eat.
>> We're all done.
>> Look at everyone leaving.
>> They just started leaving. They're upset. I'm upset, too.
>> Don't sit next to me again.
>> Do have a movie theater. Let's see what's showing. Oh, this is where the popcorn came from. I was wondering where they got it. Smells so good. Much as a movie. Let's try. 625. That's cheap.
Have a bowling alley, too. It's a big one. There's an arcade in the bowling alley, too. And nearby is an event room.
>> Oh, it's big. Cool.
>> I know, right? Yeah.
>> There's pegs on the bottom that you put your feet on.
>> Yeah. And then you move forward with this one.
Ah, >> go down the escalator.
>> Not wide enough for me.
>> What's the score now between the Dodgers and SF? SF's still leading. Mommy is giving. Oh, I love that. I do like that the old machines and the new machines kind of mingle in the center of the casino. Let her lounge looks beautiful.
Oh, all the roulettes are here. Free fall roulette. Another lounge over here cuz why not? Just fill them up with lounges. This casino is so beautiful. I think I can finally conclude that both my bingo and sports betting are losses.
We won't have our fine dining, but good thing there is >> I'm 71. Thank you.
>> Oh, can I see your >> I came in 30 minutes before closing, but they're still super nice. Of course, the first thing I will hit is their prime rib.
>> How you like your prime rib, man?
medium.
>> Yes. Okay.
>> I got a load with fiber, smart protein, and of course, Asian food.
>> Special delivery. She said this is my favorite, so I'm adding it.
>> For my >> good. Yeah. When I think about all my plans, everything I need, always more money to spend cuz I got these miles to be. Then I think about where I've been and I must believe that if he did it, he'll do it again. God has been too good to me.
Every good.
