Laney Jean accurately deconstructs the toxic cycle where social media turns mindless waste into a curated aesthetic for quick dopamine hits. This is a sharp and necessary critique of a culture that mistakes excessive consumption for personal identity.

TikTok's obsession with overconsumption...Added:
I truly don't have any other words other than it is not like cute. It's not for me. It's not desirable. I can't deny that a lot of the times in these videos, these things are super cute. It's like how many things do you actually need?
You're already getting sent PR on the weekly.
Hello there and welcome back to another video. My name is Laney Gene if you're new here. And if you're not new here, thank you for coming back and watching another video. Today I have no plan. I have no plan other than I want to sit down and react to some overconumption videos. Videos that have been popping up on my feed over the past couple months that have been saving. I don't remember when these are from. They have all been saved in a folder on my TikTok. I usually have my computer directly in front of me under my camera with some points I want to make. No points today, just raw reactions because I have been so extremely busy. Little bit of a side tangent. Feel free to skip forward in the video if you don't want to hear about this, but I'm a professional dancer. I live in New York City, so I'm auditioning all the time. And I've been getting back into auditions and taking classes after kind of neglecting it for I want to say like 6 months. So, the past two months, I've been really hitting it hard. And with that and my other jobs I do, because I have about six different jobs, it has been hard for me to prioritize my own content. I feel like I've been slacking on YouTube. I've been falling behind on Instagram. But I want you guys to know that I have planned out the next three months of YouTube videos. So, they are going to be coming. I promise I'm going to be getting so many fun videos out to you guys. Some that are going to be a little bit controversial. Some of them might ruffle a few feathers, but I want to share my opinions on some things that I've been thinking about so much recently. Okay, enough rambling. Let's get into talking about overconumption. I feel like I haven't done one of these videos. I don't even know if I've ever done a video of just randomly looking at overconumption as a whole. But I feel like every time I go on Tik Tok, which is very rare, I don't post on the app anymore, ever since they sold usage rights. I think I've only posted on there once and it was for a partnership with Plain Products um because I was posting on every platform. The few times that I do go on there, every time I go, there is so much drama. There's so much discussion about very specific topics that I feel like I have to go down an entire rabbit hole just to understand what's going on, which of course makes for great content where I'm deep diving on specific topics, but I don't want to be doing that on the daily when I go on my phone. I also try to stay off social media as much as possible outside of stuff that I'm creating or supporting, you know, mutuals or other creators that I really enjoy. So, I just I've been taking kind of a step back from the space and it's it is very interesting when I will go on TikTok and be like, whoa, that is something I've never even heard of before. Didn't know that this was happening. Didn't know this thing about this creator that I've known for a while, for example, Alex Earl. Known about her for a long time. I blocked her because I didn't really like her content. And then the skincare line thing came out. And so, I was like, well, this could be a really interesting topic for a video. So then I did three weeks of research on it, gathering all my opinions and forming a video for you guys. But I can't be doing that with every single thing I come across. And that's kind of how it feels on TikTok is I just view everything with such a like critical analysis of what people are posting that it's not really enjoyable to be there anymore. With that being said though, we are going to uh take a look at Tik Toks and analyze them. Oh, I don't like when I just get hit with random skinny top content as soon as I open Tik Tok. Okay, so I have over 30 posts saved to this overconumption folder. Okay, we're going to watch a video that the title is overconumption core and it has almost 3 million views.
Okay, first of all, this audio was used for a trend on Tik Tok and Instagram a while ago for underconumption core. This creator took it to do the opposite, which I think is in the aspect of content creation is a way to get a lot of views. This video has almost 3 million views, almost 300,000 likes. It feels like rage bait. It's going to get those views, right? Getting past that though, this is not the flex that creators think it is. Buying stuff just to buy it. Having unopened stuff constantly, having bags of clothes lying around. I truly don't have any other words other than it is not like cute.
It's not for me. It's not desirable. I just wonder how frequently you get rid of clothes in your closet to then buy new clothes. Cuz she said herself never not buying new clothes. If you have that many bags of clothes on your floor all the time that haven't even like been touched you bought them, you are not going to have infinite room in your closet, which means you're going to be throwing away clothes or donating clothes to make yourself feel better about getting rid of them and replacing them. When 70 to 80% of the clothes that go to thrift stores end up in the landfill. While there's a chance for some of those clothes to get reused, it is not as likely as people make it seem.
Having a drawer specifically for unopened products is also not cute. And even if you're like an influencer or something, like we've discussed this before when we were talking about Sephora and the Sephora sale, these creators have walls and drawers filled with unopened products behind them or products that they've used once that they can't give away to people because they've opened them and used them once.
It's not a flex. It's not desirable to have all of these objects taking up space that you're never actually going to use that you're waiting to use when you have so many other products that need to be used up first, which you can tell from this creator looking at her drawers and stuff. All of these products are probably multiples of other things she already has. She likely isn't going to get through in a very timely manner.
So, why are we buying more of it before we've even finished the previous product? Buying new skincare when you don't need it is I mean this kind of goes back to my video last week on Alex Earl. If you have a skincare regimen that works for you that has been working for you even if it's super simple like mine is a cleanser like every other day with luberm and an SPF and my skin is for the most part fine. I use like pimple patches and stuff when I have breakouts but that is pretty much the extent of my skincare routine. Have I tried other stuff? Yes, I've tried toner pads. I've tried retinols. Like when companies send me stuff to try, I will try it and I will use it till it's gone.
I don't know if I've ever repurchased though because at the end of the day, it's not like super important to me. As long as my skin feels like hydrated and it's protected from the sun and like getting skin cancer, it's not that deep to me. And it's especially confusing to me when you already have so many products you need to get through. Again, why are you buying multiples of very similar products when you still have to get through, you know, tens, if not hundreds of other skincare products you already have? I get that it can be fun and exciting to get that little dopamine hit of buying a new product, but really, how different is it from all the other products? From my understanding, from my very little understanding of of skincare, and obviously I'm not a dermatologist, but changing up stuff on your skin all the time is actually going to do more harm than good. I have super sensitive skin. If I were to change up what I'm using on my skin all the time, and I even did this like a year or two ago where I was trying a couple different products and I swapped them too fast, my skin freaked out. And I think that most people's skin would probably not enjoy that. So, I don't know why we're normalizing it so much on social media to like have so many different products to choose from for a routine when realistically the best thing you can do is just have a regimen you follow consistently that works for you. And then last thing I'm going to say about this is her literally admitting that she has an absurd amount of makeup that she will probably never use, but she buys it because it's fun.
Listen, I know I always say I will never tell you how to spend your money, and that's true. I will I will not say you can or cannot buy this, but really there are so many other things you can be doing with your money besides spending it on makeup that you aren't going to use. You could use that to go do something with friends, a show with friends, or spend money to like have a nice picnic with friends. Like, not that you need to be spending money, but if you have that money to spend, maybe try spending it elsewhere to make your life fulfilling outside of just buying stuff for dopamine. If you have a hobby you want to try, maybe you take some classes with that money instead of spending it on the makeup that you already have plenty of. Okay, we're going to move on to the next video. We're going to watch a video from a creator that I've actually been following for a while. And when I started following her, I really liked her content. But over time, I realized that she over consumes a lot and she makes a lot of jokes about having a shopping addiction and then kind of feeding said addiction. So, we're going to take a look at a haul that she did when she went to Florida and then we're going to talk about it a little bit. the language she uses, not necessarily like this is not an attack at her. I think she's a lovely human being. I've interacted with her online a few times. She seems very nice. So, I just want to be clear, this is not like on her. I just want to take a look at like the language she's using in the video. Here's a haul of everything that I got while I was in Florida as somebody with a severe lack of self-control.
What better way to come back than with a haul? That's very me. I Yeah, you bet.
This, I'll warn you, is a cancelellable offense. It is. It's bad. Also, my mom and she's the one who made me this way.
So, when we're together, it it it is scary. My aunt got me my first jelly cat. It's an engagement ring. Shut your mouth. Yes. Anthropology was having an additional 50% off sale. On top of that, if you spent $150, you got What'd you get? You got $50 off. So, everything was basically free. If you weren't already planning to spend the money on specific items, I don't think it's worth spending the extra money just to get the $50 off.
If you were planning to get stuff and it adds up to $150, great. or like if you see other things that actually make sense to you that's not just a spur of the moment spur-of the- moment purchase to meet that $150, then I like great.
There's nothing wrong with getting $50 off and only spending $100 on something that would cost you $150. I don't think that justifying purchases because it was on sale, and you guys know this. I've said this so many times. I've said this during Black Friday sales. I've said this during hauls when people buy certain stuff. Like, it's just a common theme on my page. I don't think that that's a good reason to buy something.
She's a little beat up. She went through two flights. Anyway, this is the Boy Smells Candle in Starry Spice. This smells like Christmas to me. I know it's no longer Christmas. Don't look. I'm working on it. I've never heard of this until I sprayed it in the store, but it smells like you spent the day on the beach, but it doesn't smell like sunscreen. Can't really explain it. It just It smells sexy. That's all you get.
Unfortunately, I'm really not good with my words. Another Christmas item that I got 50% off. A te a d towel. A d towel.
Close enough. This is so cute. Blurve.
Okay. I got a new mug with this little lid that you could sort of do that with.
I don't know why you would need to do that. These two colors together.
Delicious. And I spotted these Valentine's Day butter knives. I had to have them obviously. Look at them.
They're so pretty. It's an olive boat.
I'm on board. Yeah, look at her. That color scheme. I just How cute. TJ Maxx.
Since we're doing the French pin thing, I got these. Looking at them now, I don't know what I was thinking. I don't think this is going to hold my short hair, but we'll give it a go. I am a hair clip girl. I got these ones. There was no way that this was not going to come home with me. This was written in the stars. It was jewels. Are we seeing this? There are no words to describe these because what are you what the f this? This quite literally brings a tear to my eye. I know you're right. I saw these chunky sparkly ones and I immediately thought New Year's Eve and I did indeed wear them on New Year's Eve.
I also got these because I thought it was giving elegant. And then a necklace.
Yep, she's cute. And that was good old TJ. I think next Target. I'm really having a moment with tights. I don't know. These navy ones I think are going to be so cute. Then I also got a sparkly pair because I feel like that's good to have. That's good to have. Is it? Am I crazy? The ornament section made my heart stop, but I persevered and I only left with one. This one was very important to me. Like what the what is that? Mine. Yes. It wouldn't be a haul of mine if I didn't show you a lamp. In my defense, even though there was none, it was $15. More justification of purchases of like things she's buying for her home, saying that in every haul she gets these, which is true. and she has hauls almost weekly on her page. She also does a series of getting rid of things. So, it is kind of the kind of content that leads into the buy and declutter cycle that we see constantly online that is kind of promoted through influencers because how are you supposed to be able to buy more if you can't make room for it? She's chrome. She's gorgeous. This is so bad. I don't even want to show you it.
What was that? I don't know. It was denim. It was cute. I was like, "That's cute." And then Yeah. I don't I deserve to be cancelled for that one, honestly.
More perfume. I don't think we get Dose here in Canada. I'm not certain. Don't quote me on that. I've been really wanting to try them. This is Amber Cherry, which is meant to smell like Tom Ford's Lost Cherry, but it's only $50 USD. I've been wearing this every single day. I don't know why I still have in the box. I just like the newness of things. I like to keep things new as long as possible. This one's called It Factor, and it does make you smell like an it girl. It It does. [Β __Β ] smell. See?
Yeah, I know. Why would I lie to you?
Next, an itsybitsy teeny weeny blue polka dot bikini. Stone in. And then this Salt Air Santel Bloom hair oil.
I've been using this. It smells amazing.
Sephora/ Ulta. I saw this Wildflur Vitamin C Brightening Serum on somebody's Tik Tok. I believe everybody on Tik Tok, so naturally, I bought this.
I'll let you know if it changes my life.
This stuff, if you know, you know. It's incredible. I got another one. I don't know if it made financial sense buying it in the US, but I saw it and I was like, okay. Went in Rome. Last time I entered the US of A, I got an Edom lip lashu lip softening balm. First off, sexy. But also came to my attention that they have skincare. Oh, naturally, I was curious. I got their toner and then I got the rescue mist. I don't know what it is. The moment somebody recommends a mist, I'm like, "Okay, I'll buy it."
There's just I just I love mists. This box has been through it, mama. Damn.
Everybody and their mother was talking about it, so me and my mother bought it.
Here it is. I will say I don't like the smell. Oh my god. Free her. This is the Say Super Suede and Gratzy. Those are different, right? Can you tell I love a berry blush? Did I make it obvious? It's another thing that all y'all are hooting and hollering about. This renewal mask from Crown Affair. I'll try it. I love to try things. Oh, that smells so [Β __Β ] It's going back in the box so I could look at it. I'm going to stop it there. There's still like a good minute or two left in this video. First of all, I want to say and I I know I said I wasn't going to comment on the creator and this is not a negative thing. I personally love her personality. She seems like someone that I would be friends with in real life, which I think is why it was kind of hard for me to realize that her content was overconumption because I'm so drawn to her personality. Putting that aside though, there is so much language that we see constantly in like overconumption or like videos that promote overconumption, talking about how she had to have it. This was an obvious choice. Bought it because it w I was influenced. Bought something that she didn't like the smell of or isn't loving, but she's kind of having to justify it. I can't deny that a lot of the times in these videos, these things are super cute. They look very aesthetic, but they're only going to fit your aesthetic for a certain amount of time before you get bored of them because they're trendy items. Yeah, that's kind of all I have to say on that. That was a very long haul. I can't imagine buying all that stuff at once, but that's just me. All right, moving on from that. I want to take a look at a video that I saved from Ulta Beauty World because this is a thing that's I think just happened early April, maybe early to mid April. This is something I got at Ultima Beauty World. Let's do a rapid fire haul and go over everything I was able to get. I was only able to stop at like 100 or so booths. So, let's get into it. Baby Pro Nano Titanium Curling iron. Camille Rose. Saying only able to stop at 100 booths is wild to me. What do you mean only 100 booths? I would be so overwhelmed. Curl besties kit. Sacred thermal shield mist. Am dry shampoo and oil sample. Pattern hair care. Cheese straightening iron and styling kit.
Cheese silk fusion minis and iron guard spray. My scalp moisturizing lotion and curl forming glaze. Refilled scalp serum. Baby dead repair mask and climate control. Oh my god, we are going so fast. I like can't even keep track of of what is. I know she said she was going through quick, but oh my gosh.

So, is Ulta Beauty free? Wait, before we even get into the insane amount of products that she purchased, I need to know, is everything at Ulta Beauty free?
Is Ulta Beauty World free? So, from my understanding, you pay $160 for a ticket. You get a big like goodie bag when you enter, and then vendors will be handing out free stuff throughout the day. Do they also sell stuff? I have no idea. This is insane to me. This is more overconumption than I think I've ever seen in like a single beauty video. I really hope that this creator is going to share this stuff with people they know or donate some of it because there's no way. You cannot tell me that they are getting through all of those products by themselves. The amount of hair products and like lip balms and whatnot. Like as someone who uses hair products every day and lip balm every day, me and Aquafor are like this. I have had the same bottle of my plane products stuff for I want to say 4 months now. And I haven't had to repurchase it. Like I'm still good and I use them every single day. So unless you're using an insane amount of product, there is no way you are getting through all that stuff. I know that technically it doesn't go bad if you don't open it. But I really hope that you are like not just opening it, trying it once, and then wasting it. On top of that, this feels like one of those things where it's like, oh, all you have to do is pay $160 and you too can get all of these different things. Not to mention that you have to pay for like flying to wherever this is located and staying and whatever. So it does cost money to be there. It's not like you just pay $160 and get all of this stuff technically for the convention itself.
Yes, but there's other expenses. Oh my gosh, it's like making me feel sick thinking about buying that many things or not even buying that many things, sorry, getting that many things. I understand how tempting it would be to pay to go to a convention where you are walking around and people are just saying, "Here, have this thing for free. Here, have this thing for free. Here, try this." Obviously, if you're paying money to be there, you are probably going to want to take advantage of that situation. This is truly just making it so aspirational to be able to go there and get that many products that realistically no person can use on their own. I guess I could possibly justify it if you go by yourself or like you and one friend go and everything you collect you plan to disperse amongst a bunch of people and you are just like you know here I wanted to get this stuff to give to you but even then I think you should be more intentional about what things you are taking for free while it can be so tempting to just be able to try everything if you try something and you don't love it once it's open you can't donate it and maybe you could find someone else in your family that would like it and that's obviously ly a possibility, but that's a if. That's a maybe. It's not a necessarily like you are guaranteed that you'll be able to find someone that will finish it for you if you don't like it. And I think that that's kind of just setting yourself up to have so many things. And especially if you're like a beauty creator already, which a lot of these people that go to Ulta Beauty World are, it's like, how many things do you actually need? You're already getting sent PR on the weekly.
you're already buying hundreds of dollars worth of Sephora hauls every week and you're telling me you need to go to a convention to get more free stuff. It really just feels like we're glorifying a gross amount of consumption. And this is no no attack on the creator. Want to make that clear.
This is the whole idea of Ulta Beauty World. I hope that people the average person if they decide to go there is trying to be mindful about it. I think it could be beneficial for like a makeup artist and they use products on their clients all the time. Yeah, it could be great to have variety, especially if you're getting it for free for your business, but the average person like you or me is not going to be going through hundreds of products like in a timely manner before they go bad or we might not love them like I said. So, this just does not make sense to me as a concept. All right, we're going to do one more haul and this is going to be a bit of a hot take that I'm going to do a deeper discussion about in a future video. It's going to be about thrift hauls. We're going to take a look at a thrift haul that has 1.6 million views.
I have not looked at this yet, so I have no idea what to expect.
Huge thrift haul. So, starting off with bag number one, we got the accessories.
First off, we got this beautiful bag.
It's not like an amazing brand or anything, but it is in perfect condition. I had to get it. Next up, we got this bag, which this is probably going to be like an overnight bag for whenever I go to my friend's house or like I'm going somewhere with my boyfriend, but it is beautiful. It's like I don't know, it's just different and fun. I love it. Next, we got these beautiful boots, but they're have like a little heel to them. The only thing that is messed up is the bottom of these heels, but I can easily fix that. Y'all know how I am with my boots. I love me some tall boots. Then, we got these beautiful heels. The insides of them are a little messed up, but I can fix that.
And the outside, perfect condition.
They're beautiful. Like this little buckle or whatever. I I love it. I'm obsessed. I love it. Got this cutesy little everyday brown bag and it has like little hearts going all around it.
Next, we got this fun little like summer belt. I just love the pattern. Like I love how these colors go together. Next, we got this cute little purse. Nothing crazy, nothing special, but it is cute.
just like I love it again with the brown.
Yep.
Yep. This is my new wallet. I'm going to replace this cuz it's a little messed up, but I'm going to keep the little charm on it and then get rid of this and put a new one on. But love Okay, this one's a little different, but I love it. Okay, hello.
The pattern and it's like a thicker belt. Like, I lowkey love it. The buckle itself I'm not like a huge fan of, but the belt.
Yeah. Next, we got these. Again, the heels are the only thing that's like messed up a little bit. Easy fix, but they're so cute. I don't know.
Everything I got is like lowkey brown so far, but I love them. Y'all would never be able to guess it. Another brown shoe.
Okay, but these beautiful as well.
Beautiful. Love the buckle. They're a little [Β __Β ] up cuz they've been in the bag for a few days. But this bedazzled belt, love. Next, I have like this brown and tan belt, but the buckle. Can y'all see the flowers on it?
I don't know. It's beautiful. I love it.
This one's a little funky, but I think I love it.
Like, I don't know. With the right outfit, like, you really got to picture the right outfit with this one. I already washed it. Not getting no lice, but I don't know. Like I kind of love it, but I also might actually hate it.
And if I do, I'll just sell it. I think this was the last accessory that I got.
There might be some thrown in in other bags. But I got this bag, which I'm like mixed feelings about it, but I think it's so cute. Like my boyfriend told me not to get it. He's like, "You're never going to use that." I'm like, "Are we looking at the same thing?" So that was part one of the haul. Obviously you saw she had way more stuff than that. I don't want to get too deep into this discussion because I want to make a whole video on it. and I made a a real talking about how replacing fast fashion hauls with huge thrift hauls is not necessarily the answer. I will say that if you're buying this amount of stuff and you actually use it for a long period of time, great. You're saving stuff from the landfill. But if you are buying these hauls on a regular basis like this creator is, she has a lot of huge thrift hauls on her page constantly. you are going to have to declutter your closet at some point to make room for all the things you are buying, which then puts it back into the thrift store, most likely ending up in landfills. And obviously, it's not a perfect system, like you have to do something. So, buying something secondhand versus brand new is a better option, but being selective about it and being very conscious about it is really important. I worry that these creators buy these pieces not fully thinking it through and then they realize it's a bad choice or like she said with the hat, she might hate it and then just resell it or redonate it. And it's really not saving the piece at the end of the day unless you do resell it and someone of course comes to love it. But I think it's something we need to be mindful of that thrifting stuff in mass amounts isn't automatically the answer or the solution to other kinds of hauls. I don't think we really need hauls of like I don't want to say anything, but like honestly kind of everything. Um, and then I just want to talk about some of the language she was using. It was a lot of I had to get it. I'm obsessed with it. Multiples of brown shoes, which I get if you really love a specific color and you want to have different styles of shoes. Great. But maybe be just a bit more picky about what you're taking because that obviously is taking up space. But again, if she's going to wear them for years and years and years, more power to her. I know that's what I do with my shoes. I wear them until they are literally falling apart. I will see if I can get them fixed to them then wear them even longer. And I don't really know much about this creator. So, she might also do some reselling on like Dep Depot and whatnot, which then there's the argument of our depot sellers bad. I'm leaning I lean more to the side of they're probably helping find new homes for those pieces, but maybe I'll discuss that more in the video specifically talking about thrift hauls. I think that's all I'm going to react to today. I really hope you guys enjoyed this video. I know it was a bit more chatty, but I think it's good for us to just kind of sit down and discuss and react to some of these videos every once in a while. Let me know your thoughts and any reactions you had to these videos in the comments if you have any points to add. But yeah, with all that being said, that's all I have for today's video. If you liked it, please give it a thumbs up. Be sure to subscribe and turn on post notifications so you get notified every single time I upload a new video. If you want to see more of my face, share this with someone. If you know anyone that deals with overconumption or likes to hear someone ramble about it for 30 minutes, share it. Let the people know. And with all that being said, I will see you in the next one. I love you. Bye.
