That reputation stuck hard even when Samsung started improving things. Now, according to a new report, Samsung is planning a pretty dramatic shift with the upcoming Exynos 2700 chip expected for the Galaxy S27 series. And at first glance, it sounds like Samsung is taking a step backward. The company may abandon its advanced stacked WLP chip design and move to something called a side byside layout instead. Basically, instead of stacking the chip and memory vertically to save space, Samsung could place them horizontally next to each other. If you're into tech, that probably sounds immediately concerning because WLP or wafer level packaging has actually been one of the key technologies helping Samsung improve Exonos thermals over the last few years.

Then with the Exynos 2600, Samsung added something called heat path block technology or HPB to improve cooling even more. So naturally, when people hear Samsung might abandon WLP, the first reaction is, "Here we go again." But the interesting part is that this change may actually help Exonos more than hurt it.

In simple terms, the chip may actually cool itself more effectively because the heat has more room to spread. And Samsung reportedly isn't abandoning the heat path block system either. So, if HPB stays in place while the new sidebyside layout increases cooling area, the Exynos 2700 could end up running cooler under heavy loads than previous generations. That's the part that makes this story genuinely interesting because for the first time in a while, Samsung seems less focused on chasing flashy engineering and more focused on practical long-term performance. And honestly, that's probably the right move. Most smartphone users don't care how advanced a packaging method sounds. They care about whether their phone overheats during gaming, drains battery while recording video, or slows down after 10 minutes of multitasking. If Samsung can solve those realworld issues, nobody's going to complain that the internal layout is less futuristic. There's also a much bigger business angle here that people overlook. Samsung can't realistically abandon Exynos. Even if Snapdragon chips are currently preferred by a lot of users, Samsung still needs its own silicon division for leverage and flexibility. Having Exynos gives Samsung bargaining power when negotiating with Qualcomm. It also protects the company if supply chains become unstable or if pricing from external chip suppliers suddenly spikes. In other words, Exynos isn't just about performance anymore.

The interesting thing is that Samsung now seems willing to rethink the entire strategy instead of stubbornly pushing the same approach over and over again. Better efficiency, better thermals, better sustainability in production. Sometimes the smartest engineering decision isn't making something smaller or more advanced. It's making something more practical. Of course, none of this guarantees success. Exonos still has a reputation problem and Samsung has to prove these improvements in actual devices. Benchmarks, gaming performance, battery efficiency, and sustained thermal management will matter far more than marketing claims. But for the first time in a while, there's a reason to be cautiously optimistic because this doesn't feel like Samsung cutting corners. It feels like Samsung finally adapting. And if the Exynos 2700 delivers cooler performance, stronger AI capabilities, and better efficiency inside the Galaxy S27 lineup, this so-called downgrade could end up becoming the exact thing that saves Exynos from its old reputation.
