India's government has accelerated its E20 ethanol-blended fuel policy, but the auto industry has raised significant concerns about its implementation. According to a June 2021 NITI Aayog document, SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) warned that discontinuing E10 fuel while implementing E20 could make the entire vehicle population unusable by 2028 due to material compatibility issues, fuel efficiency loss, and safety risks. Approximately 80% of India's 28-29 crore vehicles are not compatible with E20, and low-power two-wheelers, which constitute over 50% of vehicles sold in India, are particularly vulnerable. The industry has protested, demanding the reintroduction of E10 fuel nozzles, transparency in government documents, and proper infrastructure before policy implementation.
