The Amul cooperative dairy model, established in Gujarat in 1946 with inspiration from Sardar Patel, empowers farmers by ensuring that approximately 82% of the retail price of dairy products goes directly to farmers, creating rural prosperity. This model has successfully expanded to Jammu and Kashmir through the Jammu and Kashmir Milk Producers Cooperative Limited (JKMPCL), which has achieved daily milk production of 2.5 lakh litres. The cooperative system enables farmers to earn income from multiple sources including milk, honey, and cow dung (processed into BioCNG and organic fertilizer), while women receive direct payments for their dairy work, promoting self-reliance and village prosperity.

The Potential of Kashmir’s Dairy Sector || In Conversation With Amul Leadership || BTHAñadido:
Just like the Amul model has been implemented in Gujarat, a similar model will be implemented here. So I think there will be a lot of prosperity in the village.
As the Chairman of Amul, I say that if you buy anything worth ₹100, out of that ₹82 goes to our farmer.
Yes, the work I do is animal husbandry. Yes.
So if you keep cows and buffaloes at home, then the dung produced by them will be brought to the village by a tractor.
Your dung will be taken as per kg.
And by processing it, we produce bioCNG from it. So, you can fill CNG gas in the BioCNG vehicle and the remaining slurry is converted into organic fertilizer and we give it back to the farmers so that they can use it in their fields.
So he has started getting money for cow dung also. You will get money for milk, you will get money for honey and if you produce organic products then you will get money for that too. Yes, the weather is also good here. There is even grass left here. The water here is also good.
So what is 50 taka there?
Water is available from 500 feet, 600 feet, 900 feet.
Due to this, the expenditure will reduce by 50 taka here and hence it will increase here. Animal husbandry will grow a lot.
Today, within such a short time, the daily milk production of Jammu and Kashmir has reached 2.5 lakh litres. Yes.
2.5 lakh litres of milk is coming to JKMPCL and all its products are being made and delivered to you.
[Music] Welcome to Beyond the Headlines. I am Syed Mohammad Burhan your host on this edition of this episode. We are joy by Ashok Choudhary sir. Who is Chairman Amul and we are joining Vice Chairman as well Govardhan by the Millia Saheb. So we will talk to them. We would like to talk to them about Amul about the journey of this big venture in India. So we start with you. Thank you very much Ashok sir.
Brother, thank you very much for talking to us.
Sir, please tell us about the journey of Amul.
Amul's journey in Gujarat when we were not independent.
Yes, before that farmers were exploited. Yes. There was a private dairy called Polson Dairy. And Polshan Dairy did not pay equal price for the milk of the farmers.
So at that time in 1946, Sardar Patel told Tribhuvan Das Patel, a leader there, to make a milk bread.
Yes, gather the farmers and form a milk co-op and if we have milk then we will form our own group of farmers.
Yes, as I told you, Amul was established with the inspiration of Sardar Patel. At that time, our Amul Dairy was started in Kheda District.
I want to tell you that in Gujarat, there are different dairies in 18 such districts.
Dairies were started in all those places at different times.
Gradually, initially all the dairies used to do separate marketing, then later in 74, Dr. Kurien put forward an idea that if all the unions go to the market with different brands. There is a lot of competition in the market and it will be difficult to survive. Yes.
So let's do one thing, let's create a brand for everyone. Yes.
So as of today, the Daria is different in all the districts. Yes.
But everyone's brand is the same. Its name is Amul. Yes.
So at that time Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation was established which is known as Amul. Yes.
All the dairies there get milk from the village.
That milk comes inside the dairy.
After the milk comes into the dairy, whatever product is made, its name remains Amul.
Yes, I would like to know from you that as we know that Omul started from Gujarat, then how did it reach the rest of the country? Please tell us about this. That is why it is more, when it started from Gujarat, then in small states like Maharashtra and UP, those states are big states, the pigeon milk business was not running in them, it had to be run through cooperatives, if it is run through cooperatives then the farmers and animal husbandry get very good money, hence that Gujarat model is spreading everywhere, if we talk about your visit to Kashmir, then you came to Kashmir, what was the purpose of your visit? The purpose is that as work has been done in Gujarat through Amul, the farmers of Gujarat have become prosperous.
Yes, to do similar work in Jammu and Kashmir, Amul Federation came forward and established Jammu and Kashmir Milk Federation at that time.
Yes, we have been his promoters and we are supporting him a lot. I am happy to tell you that the vision of our Prime Minister, respected Narendra Modi ji and our Cooperative Minister, respected Amit Bhai Shah sahab is that just like prosperity has come in Gujarat, if similar work is done here, then whatever amount of milk the rural women produce by doing animal husbandry, our Jammu Kashmir Milk Federation will take that milk and when it is sold here, then its money will also go to our villages. So because of that, in our rural areas, in all the districts of Kashmir and Jammu, in those districts, along with farming, in the villages, we do farming work and along with that, we will also do animal husbandry work, we will keep cows and buffaloes, then whatever milk is produced from them, that milk will be taken by the village society, that milk will come here to JKMPACL and that milk will be sold from JKMPCL in Jammu, so it is your milk and you yourself are the customer, so that money will go to your village. Yes.
So I want to request everyone to produce as much milk as possible and when that milk comes here to JKMPCL, you will use the product that will be made from it and that money will reach your village. Yes.
So, providing employment to the rural people is going to be the biggest task. And this is the vision of respected Prime Minister Modi ji and our Home and Cooperative Minister Amit Bhai Shah ji that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have to bring prosperity to all the villages. For example, in Gujarat, there is a huge income from animal husbandry along with farming.
If the same thing happens here, then gradually everyone will become prosperous. I am happy to inform you that today, within such a short time, the daily milk production of Jammu and Kashmir has reached 2.5 lakh litres. Yes.
2.5 lakh litres of milk is coming to JKMPCL and all its products are being made and delivered to you. Yes.
This is the biggest work done by Amul for JKMPCL. That brother, you can take as much milk as comes from the village. Whatever milk you sell, whatever is left over will be bought by Amul in bulk.
Yes, for them it is just about selling milk.
Meaning there is no problem. The more these people develop their own market.
Their own brand is JKL's Snow Cap.
Through it he will sell milk and other products.
Even after that, if milk is left, Amul will not take all that milk. Yes, even Amul is supporting it. The Indian government is also supporting. I am happy to inform you that today the Government of India is giving full subsidy for the bulk coolers for cooling milk in the villages.
So that the milk can be cooled and brought to the dairy.
Amul is also helping in all the products.
So overall, what we want to say is that just like the Amul model has been implemented in Gujarat, a similar model will be implemented here. So I think there will be a lot of prosperity in the villages and especially I want to tell all the people and your viewers that our rural women in Gujarat do this work, the money goes directly into the accounts of the rural women, so the women themselves have become prosperous, the women themselves have become self-reliant.
So what will be your message for the women of Kashmir?
My message to our sisters in Kashmir will remain the same, that you should come to Gujarat and see the work going on in Gujarat for milk production, Amul is ready to help you and you should do the same commercial farming for milk here as is done in Gujarat, then you will get those benefits and prosperity will be yours. I am happy to tell you that if you buy AUL products anywhere in the country, then if you buy a product worth ₹100, out of that ₹82 goes to our farmers.
₹82 ₹82 so you say this with confidence in the world ₹82 ₹82 I say this as the Chairman of Abul that if you buy anything worth ₹100, out of that ₹82 goes to our farmer.
Yes, all the work is done with the remaining ₹1. After deducting everyone's salary and plant expenses, ₹82 goes to the farmer. That is why prosperity has come to the village.
Yes, and this business is such that if he gets good money and good price for milk, then he will get inspiration to do this work.
Quality will also be maintained. In Gujarat, as we told earlier, we are now going into organic products also. We have also started working on honey. It can happen here too.
Those who work in animal husbandry. Yes.
So if we keep cows and buffaloes at home, then the dung produced from them.
What do you call cow dung here in Hindi?
Gobar tries to speak Urdu, but here it is just called Gobar.
Yes. So we also call it cow dung. So we are going to start giving money for cow dung also.
In Gujarat, we Amul have set up Charp plants. The tractor will come inside the village. They will take your dung on per kg basis and after processing it, we will produce bioCNG from it.
So, you can fill CNG gas in the BioCNG vehicle and the remaining slurry is converted into organic fertilizer and we give it back to the farmers so that they can use it in their fields. Yes, he has started getting money for cow dung also. You will get money for milk, money for honey, money for cow dung and if you produce organic products, you will get money for that too.
So I would also like to know from the Vice Chairman how was your visit to Kashmir and how do you view the visit you made to the JKMPCL unit?
No, our visit was very good. Two or three things have been seen from here.
Animal husbandry will flourish here, hence the weather is also good here. There is even grass left here. The water here is also good.
So what is 50 taka there?
Water is available from 500 feet, 600 feet, 900 feet. Has to be removed.
And that is not the issue here.
Yes. There is an issue here as well.
Whatever expenditure we incur, this will reduce the expenditure here by 50%. Therefore, animal husbandry will increase a lot here, so it should be increased. Even then everyone will get livelihood. He has to do the work of animal husbandry. The other one doesn't have it.
Those who are currently engaged in animal husbandry should get work. It is better to get more or less.
How did you like Kashmir and what will be the overall message for the farmers here?
Firstly, consider that this is my fifth visit. I have come here five times in the last 15 years.
Yes, the people of Kashmir love everyone a lot. He respects everyone very much.
So we have great respect for the Kashmiri people. Yes. They are very nice people and very hardworking people.
So I believe that what we have discussed is that one economy is created by farming, agriculture and the other village economy can also be created by milk.
Yes, everyone should do this work together. And if this work is done then just like the prosperity that has come to Gujarat through Amul, similar work will happen here too. So overall, our farmers will prosper and our sisters who work in animal husbandry, money will go directly into their accounts, so they too will become self-reliant, villages will also prosper and our India will become a great India and the Prime Minister 's dream is that in 2047, it will be 100 years since our independence, so the dream of making a developed India, yes, in that, Jammu and Kashmir will also have a big role to play. Yes, thank you very much. Many thanks to both of you guests. Nazreen, these were the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Amul with us.
He spoke to us and also said that if we invest in milk or milk farming in Kashmir, how much potential is there and how can we explore it.
Thank you very much for watching this program.
Keep watching Kashmir Observer.
