What is fire? (it's not what you think)

[00:00:15]A solid?

[00:00:16]Most people would say fire is hot gas.

[00:00:19]That's what I thought, too.

[00:00:21]But it's wrong.

[00:00:22]Fire isn't gas.

[00:00:24]Fire isn't plasma.

[00:00:26]Fire isn't really a thing at all. It's something happening.

[00:00:30]And by the end of this video, you'll never look at a candle the same way again.

[00:00:34]In school, you learned matter has four states: solid, liquid, gas, plasma.

[00:00:39]So, fire must be one of these, right?

[00:00:42]Plasma is when atoms get so hot, electrons rip off and float free.

[00:00:47]That happens around 10,000 degrees Celsius.

[00:00:50]A normal candle flame, about 1,000 degrees.

[00:00:54]Way too cold to be plasma.

[00:00:57]So, fire isn't plasma, at least not most fire.

[00:01:00]Here's what's really going on.

[00:01:02]When you light a candle, the wax doesn't burn directly.

[00:01:06]The heat melts the wax, then vaporizes it.

[00:01:09]Now you have wax molecules floating in air.

[00:01:12]Those molecules slam into oxygen molecules at insane speeds.

[00:01:16]They break apart and rearrange, making carbon dioxide and water.

[00:01:21]And every time they rearrange, they release a tiny burst of energy.

[00:01:25]That energy makes nearby atoms vibrate.

[00:01:28]Their electrons jump to higher levels.

[00:01:30]And when those electrons fall back down, they spit out a photon.

[00:01:34]Light.

[00:01:36]That glow you see, that's literally electrons calming down.

[00:01:40]So, now look at the flame again.

[00:01:42]It's not gas.

[00:01:44]It's not plasma.

[00:01:46]It's not even one thing.

[00:01:48]A flame is a region of space where a chain reaction is happening, fuel meeting oxygen, breaking apart, releasing photons, all at once, billions of times per second.

[00:01:58]Fire isn't a noun.

[00:02:00]Fire is a verb.

[00:02:01]This is also why flames have that classic teardrop shape, but only on Earth.

[00:02:06]The hot gases rise because of gravity.

[00:02:09]In space, where there's no up, a candle flame is a perfect blue sphere.

[00:02:13]NASA has tested this.

[00:02:15]It looks alien.

[00:02:17]Flame color tells you the temperature.

[00:02:19]Red is the coolest, around 600°.

[00:02:23]Yellow, that's burning carbon particles glowing like a light bulb.

[00:02:27]Blue means clean burning, super hot, over 1400°.

[00:02:32]The blue base of your candle, that's the hottest part.

[00:02:36]Not the tip.

[00:02:37]Stars are doing the same thing on a massive scale, fusion instead of combustion, but the same idea.

[00:02:43]Atoms rearranging, releasing photons.

[00:02:46]Even your body is doing a slow, controlled version of this right now.

[00:02:50]You're burning sugar with oxygen.

[00:02:53]The only reason you don't catch fire is that your cells release the energy slowly, in tiny steps.

[00:02:58]So, a flame isn't a thing you can hold or measure.

[00:03:01]It's a process.

[00:03:03]A region where atoms are tearing each other apart and releasing the energy stored in their bonds.

[00:03:08]Take away the fuel, the oxygen, or the heat, and the flame doesn't go somewhere.

[00:03:12]It just stops happening.

[00:03:14]Which raises an even weirder question.

[00:03:17]If fire is just energy releasing, what is heat, actually?
