This comparison cleverly highlights how a shared language can mask profound cultural divides through the simple lens of comfort food. It effectively demonstrates that "tea" is less a beverage and more a vessel for distinct regional identities.

Brit Reacts to Brits Try American Southern Food in the Deep South…Added:
Brits try southern food at a historic tea room in the deep south. Very excited to check out this American southern food. Before we do get into this, appreciate if you guys can subscribe button. Let's see what we got.
>> If you warmed this up, put a bit of milk in it. It'd be gorgeous. It'd be wonderful, wouldn't it?
>> Sound like a British taste out of this restaurant.
>> You've got some really weird combinations.
>> Today, I'm taking Andrew for afternoon America.
>> Yes. I'm looking forward to a nice cup of milky tea, some clotted cream, and some cucumber sandwiches.
>> We You know what's crazy? British actually eat and love cucumber sandwiches.
>> I don't eat them, but it's very popular.
>> Behind me is the most popular tea room here in Atlanta.
>> Let's go and get a scone.
>> In England, a tea room means something very specific.
>> Yeah, I don't know what an American tea room is, but I know what a tea room is in the UK. make scone sandwiches and a pot of afternoon tea. But here in the American South, that same name means something completely different. And today, Andrew is about to find out why.
>> Okay.
>> Oh, thank you. Not quite what you were expecting.
>> No, this place is huge.
>> I didn't know what I expected.
>> Oh, but look at all of the pictures on the wall. Although, I'm assuming they're either f >> What makes an like a tea room a tea room in America, though?
>> Miss people or regulars or something?
>> It is. But can I just start by saying we have pencils?
>> Oh, >> why have we got pencils >> and >> and a piece of paper?
>> Oh, do you write out your order?
>> I don't think so. I think you write your own menu.
>> Hi.
>> Hi. How are you?
>> Doing good. How are you?
>> Good. Yeah. How what are they coloring?
Like are they doing drawings?
>> My name is Josephine and I'll be taking care of you.
>> Super. Thank you.
>> Thank you.
>> Is this our first time here?
>> Yes, it is.
>> What gives it away?
Immediately as we sat down, our server came over and explained the entire menu.
There's so much choice on there.
>> What do you mean explained it?
>> Asked her, "What are the best sellers?"
>> Oh, yeah. You do fill out the menu.
Okay.
>> Form. So, they still have it.
>> Oh, nice.
>> So, this was actually what what people used to do.
>> Interesting. They're keeping it the historic way about it, right?
>> It makes my job easier.
>> I'll just be over there. Oh, we're mainly known for our fried chicken. A lot of people come here and they want to try our fried chicken.
>> Okay. See the >> All right. So, the the food menu itself is like just a regular restaurant kind of food menu. So, I'm still curious to like what makes it an, you know, a tea room.
>> Chicken fried chicken is probably one of our most sold dishes. It's my favorite.
And then it comes with your two choices of sides.
>> Okay.
>> It's still very simple, but it's probably one of the best things I've ever tried here.
>> Sounds good. Yeah. And then the catfish.
If you eat seafood, um I'm not a big seafood person. A lot of people like our fried catfish. You can also do it grilled or blackened, but that comes with >> You know what? I love that how she just said that. Like she just said she's not a big seafood person. It's like she's actually giving her honest opinions there. Otherwise, she wouldn't have said that. You know what I mean? I really do like that. Well, to be fair, you're not even I don't think anyone ever in the UK has ever explained the menu to me.
So, yeah. This is interesting. puppies and then your own choice of two sides.
>> Okay.
>> Wow. Very interesting. So, hope you have >> This is not like a tea room in England.
>> That's the opposite of better because you got fried food.
>> Straight away something felt.
>> Yeah. Tea rooms in the UK. I I know of them. I don't never been to one. I don't want to go to them. You have like tea, small cakes, sandwiches. Cut >> off. No teapotss, no little triangular sandwiches, and definitely no scones.
And what made it even stranger from the outside it looks fairly small, but once you step inside it just keeps going room after room's packed with diners. This wasn't the quiet little tea room I was expecting. This was something completely different.
>> I've never had pot liquor. I don't think I've ever had pot liquor.
>> No.
>> What we didn't realize first time, >> what is pot liquor? I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is. Visitors, you get complimentary bread, cornbread, and something called pot lick.
>> Oh, wait. Okay. Colored greens and a juice.
>> I wonder if it's called pot licker cuz you lick the pot.
>> I'm assuming it's a good point.
>> So, this is Do we eat pork? Do we ever >> salty and earth? Oh, it's it's really quite good actually.
>> Like a very light soup or something.
>> Like a It's like >> Yo, I can't believe you get complimentary bread and complimentary cornbread. broth like a pork broth with a little bit of almost feels healthy cuz the vegetables are in there.
>> Oh, this is spongy and soft. I wonder if it's going to be sweet.
>> It's not sweet.
>> It's delicious, but it's not sweet.
>> I thought cornbread is meant to be sweet.
>> Quite like nonsweet cornbread.
>> Oh, >> it's a revelation.
>> I get what you mean about the cornbread.
It's not sweet in its slightest, isn't it? No.
>> That's really good, though.
>> Kind of salty, but I like that.
>> Wait, wouldn't it just be like bread if it's not sweet? a lot. But let's see if I can do this in here. I don't know if this is allowed, but I'm doing it.
>> Screw it. Maywell, >> good job you're not in a UK tea room.
>> Wow.
>> Yeah, you can't be doing this in one of your fingers.
>> You got to be ever so elegant in a British tea room.
>> That's like the best sponge in the world. It just soaks a bowl of juice.
That's amazing.
>> They're warm. Yes, I said warm.
>> Oh, warm bread's nice.
>> Straight out of the oven.
>> Warm bread is nice. And she does love her bread. I know that. I've seen quite a few of these videos and she absolutely loves bread.
>> Much fresher.
>> This will be all gone.
>> I'm so happy. I'm so simple. Give me warm bread. And I'm just like, that's great.
>> We've not ordered any food yet.
>> Do you want to try some with the butter?
>> Absolutely.
>> So, you don't have any more of the bread.
>> Okay.
>> I'm not being nice.
>> Oh, they are really good.
>> They are. They're a lot lighter than when we made them. Do you remember when we made them? They were very dense when I made them.
>> Yeah, they are. They are delicious. It's not a scanner though. Definitely.
>> See? See? This is like warming you up to your main meal anyway. You don't want it too heavy.
>> Not a scanner.
>> Is it okay?
>> We're just just about to start filling it in now. We might need some help with the spelling.
>> And I I don't grade the papers.
>> Yeah. No worries.
>> I've made a decision. It is like a test.
I think >> I've made my decision.
>> Okay. Oh, so you put your arm around it so I can't see what you're you're ordering.
>> Yeah. All right. Okay.
>> Good grief. You're deep in concentration.
>> Yes. I'm trying to make it so it's clearly >> Wait, this is actually a really good idea cuz you could have like a surprise meal. You know what I mean? Like like you could be with a bunch of people and everybody's here what you're having to want, right? Well, what you want. You can just order the whole menu. Nobody's going to have a clue. Oh, this food's turned up. It might be free. I don't know what I put cuz I know looking at yours your child's writing it might be difficult to understand whereas mine >> clear needs >> you mean you mean you're saying my writing is needed >> oh wait yeah what if you get handwriting that you can't read and I mean myself I don't have the neatest handwriting I'm not going to lie >> yes I know thank you >> well >> but I've gone for three things I've never had before so this should be good >> everything on my bingo card I've had before >> fried chicken >> when in a new tea room. You've got to try something different, haven't you?
>> This is not what you were expecting, were you?
>> Not at all, man.
>> He thought tea.
>> No.
>> And do you know why these places >> Well, he's got a Isn't that a sweet tea that he's got?
>> America likes their tea. Cold >> and sweet.
>> Well, I bet this is so nice, though.
>> Wow.
>> Is that sweet?
>> That is very sweet. Very nice. But it's very sweet.
>> Try some.
>> See, I love sweet things. So, I'm all up for this.
>> I feel like your teeth are still tingly for that.
How sweet is it?
>> It's delicious. Do you know I actually think if you warmed this up, >> put a bit of milk in it. It'd be gorgeous. It'd be wonderful, wouldn't it?
>> We'd all suddenly get chased out of this restaurant.
>> I'm the South.
>> Get out. I'm like, "No, just take the ice out, put it in the microwave. 2 minutes. A drop of milk in there."
>> Yeah.
>> It's how I used to drink my tea.
>> You know what? I might have to try and make a sweet tea. I'm not going to lie.
Uh cuz I I I do want to try and I do want to try it very sweet of like how you guys do do it.
>> Can you imagine what it'll be like at 7:00 if it's this busy now?
>> Here we go.
>> Oh.
>> Oh, here's the food.
>> Thank you.
>> Wow.
>> How big are the trays?
>> Wow. Okay. Okay.
>> Is this what we were expecting now?
>> Yeah.
>> You look a little shocked.
>> Wait, wait, wait. What's go what's going on? That's not quite what I was expecting Howling John to be.
>> I was not expecting a tomato pie to be like that.
>> Right. Let me explain what I've got for this.
>> Yeah. What's that?
>> It's Howling John.
>> Hopping John.
>> Hopping John.
>> John is not Howling John. It's hopping.
>> What is that?
>> I've renamed it for Friday. This is Hopping John. Apparently, >> it's Howling John cuz he's had a few pes.
>> It I don't know what it is. They don't look great, though. I I don't really like the look of this one. It looks like mushrooms on top of rice. Is that what it is?
>> Stuck his toe.
>> I'm lit. I'm literally on sweet tea. So, >> what is it?
>> This is hopping. I can't even remember what it is now.
>> Hopping. He's hopping on one foot.
>> Okay. It's rice with beans on top of it apparently.
>> Oh, beans.
>> Beans.
>> Is a southern staple apparently, which is tomato pie.
>> What's the tomato? That's how I pictured it to be.
>> Chicken.
>> Chicken fried.
>> Oh, chicken fried chicken gravy. Bro, look at this.
>> Chicken with gravy. Do >> you know what it looks like? It looks like a chicken fried steak.
>> It does. Chicken fried chicken. And what did you get? Extra chicken fried chicken.
>> I've got fried green tomatoes.
>> Okay. I want to try these.
>> Mac and cheese.
And then I got what they're famous for, which is fried chicken. I'm starting with this mac and cheese.
>> Oh my god. This is making me hungry. I should Oh no. I should watch the bed.
>> It's been talking to me. It's got Look at that skin.
I'm not a big mac and cheese guy, but I would love to try in America. I really would.
>> I feel like the mac and cheese in the UK is just a bit too like bland, >> but I do live in the UK. Everything's bland.
>> You got to try it.
>> Wow.
>> I couldn't sleep on it.
>> That good.
>> I could not.
>> That is spectacular.
>> They got cream in it.
>> Yeah, very much so. It's more creamy and cheesier.
>> Good. What I did notice though, you didn't give me any of the crispy bit off the top, which was I thought was a bit of a faux par.
>> But did you not hear what I said we were not supposed to be sharing today?
>> Well, I know, but that bit does look really good.
>> I've got food envy right now.
>> Fried green tomatoes.
>> See, I'm really looking forward to trying a fried a fried green tomato cuz I don't mind tomatoes. I don't really eat them by themselves, but like fried.
It just sounds good.
>> Everything Everything's better when it's fried. Oh my god, that is good.
>> That's why I like it.
>> That is good.
>> And it's not slimy either.
>> Milliondollar question.
>> What's your chicken like?
>> I'm trying to find the crispiest bit.
>> Legendary chicken.
>> Really crispy. Look at this. Look at that. Look at that piece.
>> That Oh, the crunch.
>> I can hear that crunch from here.
>> The crunch.
>> Come, sweetheart.
Wow.
>> I shan cry that the last time I had soul food.
>> But >> so do you think my decision?
>> Do you think you're missing out not having cucumber sandwiches and some scones?
>> My only regret is >> What's that?
>> Yeah. You know what? This is way better than the British TV room. I'm not going to lie. This is way better.
>> I got the three-piece, not the four. Do you want to try some of the chicken?
>> It's not greasy, is it? Mm-m.
>> Oh my god. Listen to it, doesn't it?
>> Yeah.
>> It still tastes like chicken and not grease.
>> Yeah.
>> The coating is crispy. I don't know how you do that. But while you've got that, let me try some of mine.
>> Yeah, that's a thing in the UK. I don't know why, but we don't get crispy chicken at all. It just goes soggy.
>> You've got some really weird combinations.
>> I went a little bit off my comfort zone here, but I figure >> I'm proud of you, >> Howling John or whatever it's called.
>> Popping John. helping Dave over here.
Looks like it's just rice with some beans and then some kind of liquor or sauce over it.
>> It said it she said it had pork.
>> M.
>> Is it good?
>> That's really good. It's kind of like >> See, to me this don't look like I don't know. It don't look like some I would enjoy like Yeah.
>> liquor or sauce on it which really adds a lot of saltiness to it. So, it makes this the rice just not bland. And those beans are like stewed right down so they're really soft.
>> Yes.
>> I've never really seen beans like that.
I'm just used to Hines beans in the UK with a load of sauce on it.
>> Oh, the beans are creamy, aren't they?
>> Where's the tomato?
>> Delicious.
>> I like hopping John.
>> Next up, we have this, which apparently the server said was one of her favorite things. It's tomato pie.
>> Never heard of it. We had tomato pie in Philadelphia.
>> Well, that was like a pizza.
>> Yeah.
>> Like a tomato is very rare.
>> Is it sweet? No, it's got a real tomatoy flavor, but it's not aggressive, >> but it's got like a cracker base to it or something, which is kind of add some texture to it.
>> She does taste like a Ritz cracker base and then it's got lots of cheese in there.
>> Yeah, I'm not tasting as much of the cheese yet. What is going on?
I don't know. It to me it sounds like a tomato cheesecake.
Yo, America and America's food, man.
Blows my mind every time. Like I just there's so many different crazy combinations, bro. I would love to try it, though. I'm not going to lie.
>> Can I try some of it?
>> That is I think there's cheese on the top. There you go.
>> Oh, is it is it warm?
>> Yeah.
>> I expected it to be cold.
>> Oh, >> that might that might be one of my new favorite things.
>> It's almost like >> that good.
>> Like a ball of nays tomato base. Like a little sweet, >> but it's good tomato. Not bad tomato.
>> Oh, I like that.
>> Now, this is >> okay. I don't know the difference between a good and a bad tomato cuz I don't really eat tomatoes. I have tomato flavor things, but not the actual tomato. That's >> soft. This is chicken fried chicken. I think we've had this before from memory.
>> No. Would it be like a chicken a scolop?
>> It's like a million times better.
>> She did say this is one of the most popular things and her favorite. That is >> I don't know how a chicken becomes fried chicken because the fried chicken is already fried chicken, but the chicken fried chicken. I don't know, bro. But the chicken fried chicken with this with the with the gravy looks amazing.
>> Extremely good. It's like really tender chicken with batter.
>> Oh, >> that I feel like it's sticking to my ribs as I used to.
>> This is making me so good.
>> Come here. Let me give you a cuddle. Let me stick to you.
>> Looks so good.
>> But let us know in the comments who you think got the best plate of food.
>> Southern food in America, man. Let me know which like what southern food is your favorite.
>> What type of southern food?
>> Yeah. And we've still got dessert as well.
>> This is going to be a really tough one.
You at home, >> we're counting on you.
>> Get yourself a pencil.
>> Do you know what? I don't know. I don't like But they're all apparently good.
I'd like a mix. I would like the the the the chicken with the more chicken with the tomato. And I would like to try this as well. The mac and cheese I do want to try as well. And I would try the Okay. I I want to try everything.
>> Besides, >> get yourself a pencil and a piece of paper. Who's >> for our plates? I want to try everything.
>> In order to continue our little competition to see who got the best plate of food, >> you're going to have to select either the peach cobbler.
>> Yes.
>> Or the surprise dessert >> and stick your name on one of them.
>> To make things a little more interesting, we decided to turn dessert into a little bit of a game. One of us has to pick the famous peach cobbler, while the other has to leave it entirely up to the server to choose which dessert we have.
>> See, I kind of want a surprise. I like surprises.
>> Huh?
>> Well, no. I can't do that before I've seen them. Are you trying to tell me I should do that before?
>> They should let the server choose who gets what.
>> You've got to You've got to choose either peach cobbler or the random one which the server is choosing for us.
>> And I get to go first >> because you're my wife and you choose first.
>> Okay. I'm going peach cobbler.
>> Oh, she's not risking it.
>> I'm going peach cobbler.
>> She's not risking it. Well, that makes yours the peach cobbler and mine the random dessert. That's We're not sure what it is yet.
>> Thank you. This is the banana pudding.
>> Oh, yes.
>> Oh, I do want to try banana pudding.
>> That's a good nervous. I didn't know.
>> I was hoping you'd bring that.
>> I don't think I could have made a wrong decision.
>> Yeah.
>> Peach cobbler or banana pudding? I think she literally read our minds, didn't she?
Which one's your favorite? Peach or banana?
>> They both do look good.
>> Nice and warm and gooey, right?
>> Superlative is >> amazing.
>> Fantabulous.
>> Oh, fragilistic xidocious.
>> Damn.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> I don't know what they're doing to me today.
>> Oh. Yo, is anyone else absolutely starving and really can't wait to like just go in and get some food? Well, you guys can pause the video and get food. I got I got to wait, man. I got to wait.
>> Just when you think it can't get any better.
>> And then I look at this bowl. I'm like, where's the rest? Give me a give me more.
>> That's the only downside is the the size of the bowls aren't as big as I was hoping they were going to be.
>> I've somehow found a second stomach.
>> Wait. Which is kind of crazy cuz in America America's known for bigger dishes, right? But they got the small dessert bowls. I don't quite know how I did it, but you need to try You need to try that one.
>> I can smell cinnamon or something immediately. Can you?
>> No. But then again, they're probably similar sizes. They're probably still bigger than UK desserts. I'm not going to lie.
>> Yeah.
>> Great.
>> Looks like cinnamon.
>> I want to know immediately, isn't it?
>> I want to know what that tastes like.
>> That is That is really good, isn't it?
I've not really had many cinnamon foods over here in the UK.
>> Not many at all. This was the surprise dessert that the server very kindly chose for me.
>> And it looks like a >> See, I love banana. Love it. I love like banana desserts. I have like a banana chocolate barbecue dessert that my dad's family do. So good.
>> It's got meringue.
>> I know. That's the bit I'm going for right there. That's meringue.
>> I don't think I've ever had banana pudding with meringue.
>> This one's in the bag. I think I've won this now. I've seen the meringue.
Wow, >> that good.
>> That is >> It's I can't say it.
>> Oh man, I I'm booking my ticket to America again now. And now I'm going I'm going to the South and I'm getting some southern food.
>> It's life changing.
>> I'm doing it.
>> I'm that predictable. That is so good.
It's so buttery and so premium. But ah try that. It's not a big >> So So all of these parts are big banana.
Like which part is the banana? I don't even know. Like it's got to be this, right?
>> Smells of vanilla.
>> That good.
>> Up until I tried that.
>> Yeah.
>> This was my favorite dessert.
>> Now, now it's banana.
>> That banana pudding. I'm in a world soy oil. I don't know which one I want. I want them both. That >> see like the different textures to the banana pudding is confusing me.
>> Has that vanilla taste to it >> and it's making my mouth water as I'm talking.
>> Well, the the pastry or the It's like a spongy part. There's like a like there's so many different parts.
>> Biscuits in it are so soft, aren't they?
We better finish this off.
>> I'm sad.
>> Mark your bingo card with what you think is the best dessert and who picked the the best meal in total.
>> I'm sad cuz I think I'm going to eat all of this.
>> Well, that wasn't a tea room that I was expecting.
>> No.
>> No. That's so different. I'm not going to lie. That banana pudding I probably want to try the most.
>> Fantastic. Any tea room that serves fried chicken and not scones, I'm happy with.
>> Beautiful. $52 is not bad as well. But all that food, that is not bad. But yo, you know what? America's got us beat on the tea room. I'm not going to lie.
America's tea room way better than the British tea room. If you guys went to a UK tea room, you'd be coming out crying without ordering anything. I'm not going to lie. Really good video. Let me know what you guys think to it in the comment section. If you guys enjoyed, make sure you leave a thumbs up. Subscribe for more content. I'll see you on the next one. Peace.
