The closure of major industrial facilities, such as the Goodyear tire plant in Fayetteville, Arkansas, can have devastating economic effects on local communities, eliminating hundreds of high-paying blue-collar jobs that have supported generations of workers; this demonstrates how manufacturing plant closures create significant workforce displacement challenges that require coordinated community support systems including job placement assistance, workforce training programs, and employment resources to help affected workers transition to new employment opportunities.

Fayetteville Goodyear Tire plant possibly closingAdded:
And more breaking news tonight in Fayetteville, a major blow to hundreds of local workers.
>> So, according to Fayetteville Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, Goodyear, uh the plant there, says it plans to shut down its tire operation uh by the end of 2027. CBS 17's Justin Moore is live for us tonight outside the plant with that story. And this is a pretty huge hit for your area.
Uh that's right. These are some of the uh highest paying blue-collar jobs here in Fayetteville, and this plant has provided generations uh of sources of jobs here at the plant. And now employees, uh those jobs could disappear. Now, Goodyear, uh according to Goodyear, they told employees as well as their union earlier today that the Fayetteville consumer tire plant will likely close by the end of next year.
Now, [snorts] the facility has operated here for more than 55 years. It was first called Kelly Tire, later becoming Goodyear. I spoke with a woman who uh lives in the neighborhood behind the plant for about 25 years, uh who heard the news through friends who work inside the plant.
It's all been hush-hush. Um I haven't really communicated with them about what their potential to do with their uh life afterwards. One is close to retirement, um so they might just retire and call it a day. The other one is about my age, so I'm not sure what they would do.
Now, city and county leaders are are already calling the announcement devastating, but they say they're mobilizing support for impacted workers.
That includes job placement help, uh workforce training, and employment resources. Now, local leaders say the focus right now is to help the families uh and workers uh who will be losing their jobs next year uh right now. Live in Fayetteville, Justin Moore, CBS 17 News. All right, Justin, thanks so much. We appreciate it.
