Gender inequality persists in Nigerian workplaces despite some progress, with women still facing barriers in industries like construction and oil and gas, experiencing discrimination during job interviews (such as questions about marital status), and struggling to reach leadership positions due to stereotypes about emotional instability, though there are positive examples like Adaora Umeoji becoming the first female CEO of Zenith Bank.

GENDER INEQUALITYAdded:
Hello everyone. Welcome to our discussion today. And today we'll be talking about gender inequality in workplaces in Nigeria today.
And here with me is Fisola Olatunji. Okay, and together we'll be sharing different perspectives on gender inequality in Nigeria today.
Okay, so ma, starting from job opportunities, >> Mhm. do you think men and women have equal job opportunities in Nigeria today? Yeah, I think my answer to that question would be no.
And yeah, I believe that no there are noticeable progress so far, but we still have instances where women or yeah, the female the female gender are still there are certain barriers in the construction the construction industries, the oil and gas sector and the likes. And we still have women being asked question of um we have women being asked if they are married during job interviews and all of that. I don't think that should be necessary during job interviews and the rest. So, I would say no. There are noticeable progress, but the answer to this question >> is is no. All right. So, all right.
My next question will be on [snorts] discrimination. Mhm. Have you personally seen or experienced any form of discrimination [music] in a workplace or during a job search or Okay. Yeah. On my own part, no, I haven't. But I have heard um I've heard of I've heard people share experiences of being asked if or they're pregnant, if they are married during job interviews. I've I've heard people say or they prefer a particular gender, the male gender to do a certain job because the other person is a woman or a female. So, Do you think promotion is based on gender or merits?
Okay, ideally it's a workplace, promotion should be based on merits, should be based on performance. But I mean in some workplaces we still see um women struggle to get onto leadership position because I mean there's this belief that women are emotional, they cannot handle certain leadership positions. So, yeah, there's still discrimination in that.
>> Okay.
Some people believe things are improving and opportunities are becoming more equal in workplaces today.
So, what do you think about that? Okay, I would say there is a noticeable difference um comparing where we're coming from to where we are at now.
Um a lot can still be done.
Um I would cite the example Adaora Umeoji, um the GM and CEO of Zenith Bank. She is the first um person female to hold such position in the bank's history. So, there is a noticeable difference. Um lot more can be done though, but I mean I think we're getting there.
Okay.
So, thank you so much for joining us, ma, and sharing your thoughts. Thank you for having me.
>> from from this discussion, it is clear that while gender inequality still exists in some areas, there are also some signs of progress.
