Socialism and Interventionism Lead to the Same Place- Government Control

[00:00:00]Most people think interventionism is a moderate alternative to socialism, but what if they are actually moving in the same direction? Ludwig von Mises wrote, "Socialism and interventionism both have in common the goal of subordinating the individual unconditionally to the state." That sounds extreme until you look at how interventionism actually works. Interventionism usually arrives one policy at a time. A regulation here, a subsidy there, a price control, a mandate, a restriction, a licensing requirement. Each policy is presented as limited and reasonable.

[00:00:40]One intervention creates distortions, and those distortions are then used to justify additional interventions. This is the interventionist spiral Mises warned about. As government expands its control over prices, production, education, health care, finance, or speech, individuals lose more authority over their own decisions. The state increasingly directs how resources are used, what choices are permitted, and which behaviors are rewarded or punished.

Individuals coordinate through prices, incentives, and personal choice. But interventionism slowly transfers those decisions from individuals to bureaucracies and political institutions. And once enough decisions become centralized, the individual no longer acts freely within society. The individual begins acting conditionally within the boundaries approved by the state. You can see this tension growing now. More economic planning, more administrative control, more dependence on political institutions to manage everyday life.
