The Ankle Brachial Index (ABPI) is a simple bedside test that compares ankle blood pressure to arm blood pressure to detect peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The formula is ABPI = Ankle Pressure / Higher Brachial Pressure. Normal values range from 1.0 to 1.4, while values of 0.90 or below indicate PAD, and 0.40 suggests severe ischemia. Early detection through ABPI can prevent serious complications like ulcers and amputation.
