The FGM-148 Javelin missile launcher is an advanced American man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile system in service since 1996. Created under the Advanced Anti-Tank Weapon System Medium Program initiated in 1983 by the US Army, the Javelin was designed to provide a reliable, easy-to-use replacement for the outdated M47 Dragon system. The Dragon's wire-guided design forced operators to stay exposed while guiding the missile increasing vulnerability. In contrast, the Javelin's fire-and-forget technology uses imaging infrared guidance to allow the soldier to lock the target and immediately seek safety. The full-scale development contract was awarded in June 1989 to a joint venture of Texas Instruments and Martin Marietta which evolved into the current partnership between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

[00:02:38]Upcoming enhancements include the FGM-148G with an uncooled seeker for faster readiness, and the lightweight command launch unit, which is 70% smaller, 40% lighter, and offers 50% longer battery life. With low-rate production contracts awarded in 2000, deliveries planned for 2005.

[00:02:57]Technically, the Javelin consists of the reusable CLU weighing 6.4 kg, which houses day and thermal imaging sights with magnifications up to 9x for target acquisition in all conditions, and the missile sealed in a disposable launch tube. The entire ready-to-fire package weighs 22.3 kg, with the missile itself 1.1 m long and 127 mm in diameter. Its effective range is 2,500 m with the original CLU, and extends to 4,000 m with the lightweight version, or 4,750 m when mounted on vehicles. The missile employs a soft launch mechanism that ejects it gently from the tube using a small motor, followed by ignition of the main solid fuel flight motor, allowing safe use from inside buildings or bunkers without exposing the gunner to backblast hazards. Guidance is provided by a cooled imaging infrared seeker featuring a 64x64 focal plane array, enabling lock-on before launch and automatic homing to the selected target.

[00:03:54]The warhead is a tandem charge high explosive anti-tank design weighing 8.4 kg with a precursor charge to defeat explosive reactive armor, and a main charge capable of penetrating 760 mm of rolled homogeneous armor. Operators can choose top attack mode where the missile ascends to 150 m before plunging onto the thin roof armor of tanks, or direct attack mode for bunkers, helicopters, or covered targets at lower altitudes of 60 m. The missile speed is approximately 140 m/s, and the system requires only about 72 hours of training to qualify an operator, a significant improvement over predecessors. The total weight of a loaded Javelin is 22.3 kg or a little over 49 lb. Just the rocket weighs 8.4 kg or 18.5 lb. The cost of a Javelin FGM-148 anti-tank missile system varies significantly depending on whether you are purchasing the full system, a replacement missile, or just the reusable launcher. If you didn't know, uh Javelins ridiculously expensive. Like we're talking insane. The price for a single missile alone is typically over $200,000 command launch unit CLU only.

[00:05:04]The reusable CLU, which contains the thermal imaging and targeting systems, cost around $249,700 in 2021. The FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile has a standard maximum engagement range of 2,500 m or 1.5 mi.

[00:05:22]While designed for this 2.5 km distance, it has demonstrated capabilities in testing to hit targets at ranges up to 4,000 to 4,750 m, which is roughly 2.5 to a shocking almost 3 mi under favorable conditions.

[00:05:37]The FGM-148 is designed to destroy almost any modern armored vehicle, including main battle tanks by utilizing a top attack mode that strikes the thinner armor on top of the vehicle.
